SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Jefferson high school softball team won the class 'AA' state championship Saturday, earning a 4-0 shutout win over Washington.
Whitney Portner got the scoring started in the first inning, thanks to a two run double.
Brooklyn Herrera added a run in the second inning, thanks to a solo homerun.
Tya Devericks singled in a run in the fifth and that was plenty of run support for the Cavs.
Portner and Devericks combined to throw a complete shutout. They allowed six hits, while striking out seven.
'It feels really good. Last game for me, so it was really fun to go out with these girls and end on a win,' Whitney Portner said.
'Coming into the season, you have one goal with your team and that's to make it to the state tournament. Coming this far and working together with your teammates is very, very, very special,' Tya Devericks said.
The win marks Jefferson's first softball state title.

Denis Bouanga's 1 goal, 2 assists help LAFC beat Sporting KC 3-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Denis Bouanga had a goal and two assists, Eddie Segura scored his first goal since 2020 and Los Angeles FC extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night. Bouanga converted from the penalty spot in the 59th to give LAFC (7-4-5), which had 56% possession and outshot Kansas City 21-5, a 2-1 lead. Dejan Joveljic scored a goal for the fourth consecutive game when he ran onto a through ball played ahead by Manu García, exploded into the area and scored from near the penalty spot to make it 1-0 in the 39th minute. The 25-year-old Joveljic, who scored 15 goals and had six assists last season and was acquired in February from the LA Galaxy in exchange for $4 million, is tied for third in MLS with 10 goals this season — five in the past four games. Segura slipped a header — off a corner kick played into the center of the area by Bouanga — inside the back post in first-half stoppage time to make it 1-1 at halftime. Olivier Giroud capped the scoring in the third minute of stoppage time, the 38-year-old's second consecutive game with a goal. John Pulskamp had four saves for Sporting. Hugo Lloris stopped one shot for LAFC. Kansas City (4-9-4) beat Houston 3-1 last time out to snap a four-game winless streak. LAFC beat Sporting 2-0 on March 22. ___ AP soccer:

Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot will miss remainder of season with torn ACL

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Vandersloot left Chicago's 79-52 loss to Indiana on Saturday night in the first quarter and did not return. The Sky announced Sunday that Vandersloot had an MRI that revealed the torn ACL and will undergo surgery to repair the injury. The 5-foot-8 point guard was averaging 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists. Vandersloot was selected by the Sky with the third overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft and helped lead them to the championship in 2021. She spent the previous two seasons in New York and helped the Liberty win the WNBA title last year before returning to Chicago this season.
