Sirens of Lesbos

Time Out15-05-2025

Sirens of Lesbos first made a name for themselves in 2018 with their reggae-infused single 'We'll Be Fine'. From October 2023 to September 2024, the band embarked on a European tour with stops at venues like Jazz Cafe in London, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and Fusion Festival in Berlin. Inspired by their time on the road, they also began working on their new album. With family roots tracing back to Eritrea and Sudan, sisters Jasmina and Nabyla Serag infuse their music with African instruments, linguistic diversity, and reggae influences. Recently announced as one of the first acts for The Great Escape 2025, Sirens of Lesbos are ready to bring their unique fusion of dance music to Istanbul.

'Speedo Summer' is here and the lads are getting their legs out

Whatever you call them, tiny swimwear for men is big business this summer, with searches up 41% in the UK. GQ has declared 2025 the year of 'Speedo summer,' while retailers are pushing short-shorts as the halfway house for men ready to dip their toes (or thighs) in the trend. 'They're designed to be noticed,' men's fashion stylist Phill Tarling tells Metro. 'They're not something to wear if you're a shrinking violet.' Though the Speedo style is synonymous with the brand, Nike, Reebok and Adidas all have versions to wear by the pool this summer, as do the likes of Roberto Cavalli and Moschino. They can thank Dolce & Gabbana and Theo James's barely-there briefs for contributing to the resurgence. Meanwhile, men's shorts designed for wearing out and about are getting shorter too, thanks to celebs like Harry Styles and Paul Mescal rocking a three-inch inseam. But Phil argues there's more to it than that, with the current trend a potential sign that straight men are becoming more fluid around style and perceptions of sexuality. 'For years, short shorts and Speedos were associated with the gay community,' he says. 'It's not so gay anymore to wear short shorts. It's metro, it's hetero, it's any sexuality. Men embrace Speedos because they can.' Our European counterparts have long embraced a thigh flash, with public swimming pools in France require men to wear tight-fitting trunks for hygiene reasons. You won't catch many long shorts in Australia, the birthplace of the Speedo, and warm countries including Spain, Portugal and Italy favour itty bitty boxers, too. So, with climate change causing record temperatures, it makes sense for the UK to follow suit. Short-shorts are particularly popular among Gen Z, says Phil, because they 'have their own rules on how they live' and aren't afraid to buck longstanding traditions ('my daughters' boyfriends all wear short shorts with Crocs and socks – it's a thing I don't understand!). He also thinks older guys are 'more acutely aware of their bodies now more than ever', so flesh-flashing fashion has prospered among those wanting to show off fitness gains. On the flip side though, stylist Nick Hem does point out that we don't often see short-shorts and speedos modelled by diverse body types. 'We're seeing some advertising with a broader range of body types – I've really noticed that with women – but with men's stuff, it's very athletic, going back to that old David Gandy era,' he tells Metro. Nick urges men to buy your speedos from a reputable brand, to ensure you aren't left with undies that turn transparent once you're in the water. 'We also need to talk about grooming,' he laughs. 'Without dictating it to people, I think that you've got to try and ensure that you keep a tidy appearance. Speedos always look better when…how do I put this…when things are neat.' More Trending Speedos can be really 'fun and playful,' so go to town with the huge variety of prints on offer. When it comes to short shorts, Phil recommends buying a chino material in the classic male shades, navy or beige, if you're feeling tentative. You could even try denim and turn them up to trial a shorter-short without splashing the cash. The golden rule? Make sure you feel good before you walk out the door. 'If you're on the beach, you've got to be able to walk with your head high and with confidence in your step,' says Nick. 'That's how you have to rock Speedos.' SXSW: 'The creative eyes of the world will be on London'

I was lucky to be a part of SXSW in Austin in 2018, and I saw first-hand the electric atmosphere of innovation that the festival creates. From helping to shape the future of tech and AI, to providing a platform for major new artists, SXSW London is a significant opportunity to generate new ideas, promote our capital and help inspire the next generation. This week the creative eyes of the world will be on London as our capital becomes the first European city to ever host SXSW. Leaders from the tech, media, gaming and creative industries are descending on Shoreditch in East London as the world-renowned Texas festival comes to our capital. Across 34 venues there will be hundreds of talks, live music, and film and TV screenings, as some of the world's most exciting talent come together. It's a great addition to our cultural calendar and another boost to our creative industries. These vital industries generate more than £63bn for the UK economy, having significantly surpassed pre-pandemic levels. They help define how London is perceived around the world, and provide young people with positive opportunities and access to training and jobs. SXSW is also the start of the biggest ever month for business and investment in London, with the Concordia Europe Summit, London Tech Week and London Climate Action Week all taking place in June. This series of major business events will attract thousands of dealmakers, investors, CEOs, entrepreneurs, innovators and creatives from all over the world, demonstrating that London is truly the best city for creativity, talent and business in the world.

Salt Bae denies being kicked out of Champions League party after World Cup drama

Salt Bae has waltzed into more football-related controversy after he was reportedly turned away from a party in the aftermath of PSG's Champions League final victory The celebrity chef known as Salt Bae has insisted that he wasn't denied entry to a Champions League party following PSG's 5-0 win over Inter Milan. The Turkish butcher and restaurant owner, real name Nusret Gokce, is known around the world after going viral for his unique style of salting steak. Gokce became such a name that footballing icons like David Beckham and Kylian Mbappe were seen at his restaurants. Despite his status and the droves of celebrities flocking to have their steaks salted by the 41-year-old, he has drawn his fair share of controversy. ‌ The most recent came at an afterparty for European football's biggest game. In a video on social media, Gokce and an acquaintance were seen being forcefully ushered away by a doorman after reportedly trying to enter a Champions League party on Saturday evening. ‌ Gokce's security team also allegedly had issues with the venue, as they were asked to show their invitation card, leading to a dispute. Yet the famed restaurateur has fiercely refuted the claims. "After the Champions League final match, we came to the hotel with the UEFA bus," he said, as per News 18."The reason we were there at that moment was the thousands of fans who wanted to see us there. "As always, I was in that area to reciprocate their love and have my photo taken. While I was waiting for my car to go to my hotel due to the intensity, I was directed by Mr. Dormen with my back turned in front of the door. "There was no organisation, such as an invitation or a party in any way, so all the news that I was not admitted to the party is unfounded." He added: "I want it to be known that we are happy to go wherever we are called with love, never to be taken anywhere. Don't worry about such small things, the rest is artificial intelligence." ‌ The last time Salt Bae was in the spotlight was at the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. There, he drew the ire of many fans when he walked onto the pitch following the game to join Argentina in their celebrations after they defeated France. Without being part of the delegation or having any official role, he handled the iconic trophy and awkwardly posed with several players, including Lionel Messi. ‌ Salt Bae's antics were widely slammed on social media. FIFA later admitted that the award protocol had been violated since only a restricted group of authorised people can touch football's most coveted trophy. Gokce's relationship with football stretches back to the 2018 Champions League, where he also posed with Sergio Ramos after Real Madrid's victory over Liverpool. He also attended the 2023 final between Manchester City and Inter Milan.
