Fire at Waimānalo Convenience Center temporarily closes facility
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A fire Monday night at the Waimānalo Convenience Center has led to a temporary closure of the facility.

The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services (ENV) announced the closure Tuesday morning.
The Honolulu Fire Department quickly responded to the scene last night, extinguishing two fires— one in a large 40-cubic-yard bin and another in a trash compactor.

Early investigations suggested the fires were not related to city operations.ENV crews are currently assessing the damage and ensuring the site is safe for reopening.
The facility is expected to resume operations Wednesday unless there are any unforeseen delays.
In the meantime, residents are urged to hold onto their waste or use alternative city disposal sites.

Project leaders said the group always had plans to expand into Waukesha County. WAUKESHA, Wis. - An entire Waukesha block is getting a makeover thanks to Revitalize Milwaukee's Block Build. By helping a whole neighborhood, there's hope a whole community will benefit. What they're saying It's safe to say Bob Hyland's house has seen better days. Hyland has lived in his home since 1964. When his dad died in 2011, Hyland became the owner. But it was a chance encounter last fall that really brought about change. "What we're doing sometimes comes with a little suspicion, somebody knocks at your door: 'We want to do some free home repairs.' Really?" said Jeff Boss, a Home Depot manager. Home Depot pays for all the materials, and Revitalize Milwaukee gets to work. Together, they pick neighborhoods in need of some TLC. This weekend, that neighborhood is "The Strand." SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News "Our normal critical repair and emergency repair is more 60 and up, and veterans and disabled folks," said Revitalize Milwaukee's Christian Ricco. "To some degree, that also gets into, with lead and asthma, some children involved." Hyland's house, in need of bathroom and ceiling work, is the biggest project. Six other homes in the neighborhood will have free work done that includes painting, landscaping and structural repairs. Without the volunteers, Hyland said he wouldn't have been able to scratch all of the projects off his to-do list. "Thank you to all of them," he said. "They said, 'We want to thank you,' and I said, 'No, no, I'll thank you!'" What's next Revitalize Milwaukee project leaders said the group always had plans to expand into Waukesha County. Hundreds of volunteers' work will continue in the neighborhood between Whiterock and East Main on Saturday. Helicopter crashes at Florida airport, 4 hospitalized

Polk County takes data-driven approach to save more pedestrian, cyclist lives
The Brief According to the FDOT, Polk County ranks 21 out of the state's top 25 deadliest counties for pedestrians. The Best Foot Forward program focuses on educating drivers to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. FDOT is funding the program that has a goal of spreading into the Tampa and Jacksonville markets. BARTOW, Fla. - Polk County is trying to become a safer place for pedestrians and bicyclists. By the numbers According to the Florida Department of Transportation, Polk County ranks 21 out of the state's top 25 deadliest counties for pedestrians. 26 pedestrians and cyclists were killed last year. What we know Bike Walk Central Florida, based in Orlando, is launching its safety program in Polk County — the first county in the Tampa Bay area market to participate. The Best Foot Forward program focuses on educating drivers to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks identified by local and county officials. The program works with law enforcement to issue warnings or citations and holds educational sign-waving events. READ:'We're not California': Florida officials pledge crackdown on doxing threats "What's really exciting about it is the stats or what they refer to as the 'driver yield rate' at pedestrian crossings. It improves significantly after they've given some of the intersections attention," said Ryan Kordek, the Executive Director of Polk TPO. 'When we launched in Orlando and Orange County in 2012, the crosswalks we were taking data at, the average driver yield rate was only 17% of drivers yielding to pedestrians," said Vince Dyer, Manager of the Best Foot Forward Program. "We've been steadily recording improvement since then. Today it's near 50% of drivers yielding to pedestrians in the same metro area." Dyer says the number of deaths and serious injuries have also gone down. The program has already begun studying crosswalks near schools and parks in Lakeland, Winter Haven and Bartow. Each crosswalk is evaluated for at least a year. "We recommend low-cost solutions, things like better striping and signage, the tubular markers, the delineators, things like that," said Dyer. "We can track those and show they have a positive effect." What's next FDOT is funding the program that has a goal of spreading into the Tampa and Jacksonville markets.
