ICC reports $474 mn surplus as T20 World Cup drives revenue

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reported a net surplus of $474 million for the financial year ended December 31, 2024, driven primarily by the success of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, hosted in the West Indies and the USA, as per its audited financials. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa, ending a 11-year drought in ICC event trophies. Despite timing-related issues, the T20 World Cup was one of the most-watched cricket events, with a television audience reach of 404 million. In the previous fiscal year, the council had recorded a net surplus of $596 million, driven by the successful hosting of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Although overall event revenue declined slightly, the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup generated $691 million, underscoring the commercial strength of the short-format tournament, particularly in emerging markets such as the United States. Additional revenue came from events including the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE, which contributed $18 million, and the U19 Men's World Cup in South Africa, which brought in $17 million. Live Events In 2023, revenue was largely driven by the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India, which alone generated $719 million, along with earnings from the World Test Championship Final and the Women's T20 World Cup. The ICC earns most of its commercial revenue from the sale of media rights and sponsorships. It has signed a $3 billion media rights deal with Star India (now JioStar). In addition to India, the council has agreements with Sky Sports in the UK, SuperSport in Africa, Willow in the US and Canada, and Prime Video in Australia. India contributes nearly 75% of the total value of the ICC's media rights portfolio, with the remainder coming from other markets. Costs associated with ICC events in 2024 totaled $231 million, slightly lower than the $246 million recorded in 2023. The Men's T20 World Cup accounted for $159 million of that amount, followed by $43 million for the Women's T20 event in the UAE. In fiscal 2023, the council incurred an expenditure of $147 million on the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Cash and cash equivalents remained stable at $132 million, nearly unchanged from $131 million in 2023. In July 2023, ICC members approved a financial model for the 2024–2027 period, aligning it with the council's largest revenue stream—the Indian media rights agreement. The ICC stated that the principles of the new model are largely consistent with the previous one, with the addition of a Strategic Investment Fund and a Contingency Allocation. Under the new model, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is projected to earn $230 million per year from the ICC's estimated annual revenue of $600 million. Jay Shah, formerly the secretary of the BCCI, was appointed as the Independent Chair of the ICC, effective December 1, 2024.

‘Difficult country to trade' Trump slams Canada over Digital Services Tax; halts trade talks

US President Donald Trump (left) and Canadian PM Mark Carney (AP) US President Donald Trump came down hard on Canada over its decision to impose a Digital Services Tax (DST) on American technology companies, calling it a "direct and blatant attack" on the United States. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced the immediate suspension of all trade discussions with Canada on Friday. Citing what he called excessive tariffs on American agricultural exports, Trump claimed that Canada has long been a "very difficult country to trade with." "For years, they have imposed tariffs on dairy products that have cost our farmers up to 400%," Trump wrote. He further accused Canada of following the European Union, which has also implemented similar digital taxation policies that are currently under discussion with the US government. 'They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing,' he said. In a sharply worded statement, Trump declared that the US would soon impose tariffs on Canadian goods. 'We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period,' the post warned. Canada's digital services tax, first proposed years ago, is aimed at ensuring that large multinational tech firms, many of which are US based, pay taxes on revenues generated from Canadian users. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 180k traders trust IC Markets for CFD trading | Sign up today IC Markets Learn More Undo The policy has drawn criticism from US lawmakers and trade officials who argue it disproportionately targets American companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta. While the Trump administration has been in talks with Ottawa over trade, this statement marks a clear break, signalling a return to his combative 'America first' stance. There was no immediate response from Canadian officials, but trade experts warn that the sudden halt in dialogue could escalate into a wider economic dispute, potentially affecting billions in cross-border commerce.

CCRI, VNIT collaborate to develop eco friendly packaging from orange peel waste

Nagpur: The Central Citrus Research Institute (ICAR-CCRI) and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) have joined hands to develop biodegradable, citrus peel-based packaging alternatives to synthetic plastics. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the two Nagpur-based premier institutes on Friday. The initiative aims to foster scientific innovation and collaborative research for sustainable development. Under this collaboration, VNIT will focus on the formulation, material design, and sustainable development of biopolymer-based packaging films, incorporating orange peel-derived bioactive compounds into chitosan-alginate matrices. ICAR-CCRI will undertake quality analysis, microbial assessment, and shelf-life evaluation of the developed packaging systems on various citrus and horticultural produce. The collaboration highlights the innovative use of citrus waste, particularly sweet orange peel, as a renewable, functional additive in food-grade packaging materials. The research is expected to contribute to circular economy goals by promoting sustainable agri-waste utilisation and reducing environmental pollution caused by plastic waste. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The collaboration offers opportunities for joint efforts in diverse fields like nanotechnology, electronics, chemical and mechanical engineering, as well as applied chemistry, thereby strengthening interdisciplinary research and technological advancements. Dr Dilip Ghosh, director, ICAR-CCRI, and Dr Prem Lal Patel, Director, VNIT, Nagpur, formally signed the MoU at VNIT in the presence of deans, heads of divisions, senior-level scientists, faculty members, and other officials from both the institutes. Dr Ghosh emphasised that the collaboration marks the beginning of a long-term collaborative journey. Dr Patel highlighted that the initiative would be highly beneficial in providing vocational training opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He further noted that the MoU paves the way for joint research proposals, academic conferences, and expert lectures in the relevant domain areas.
