Galaxy Z Flip 7: Here is what it needs to beat the Motorola Razr Ultra

Phone Arena15-05-2025

We're good five years into the foldable revolution, and even though adoption has been kind of slow, flip phones are becoming increasingly common.
This can partly be attributed to their lower price compared to book style foldables, but also to the familiar form factor. We used to have regular flip phones, and the design has proven to be successful in the past.
And even though there are many flip models, Samsung is still the leading player. But while the Korean company is gearing up to release its next flip model, the Galaxy Z Flip 7, there are certain things it needs to stay competitive.
This year, Motorola released the Razr Ultra (2025), an almost perfect flip phone and a real threat to Samsung's hegemony. Here are the five things Samsung needs to get right with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 to beat Motorola and stay on top. 1. Bigger and better cover screen
The Motorola Razr Ultra has an amazing a really useful cover screen | Image by PhoneArena
The biggest problem I've always had with foldable phones of any kind was the actual folding and unfolding itself. It's cumbersome, and if you have to do it for every little thing you do on your phone, owning a foldable quickly becomes a nuisance.
This is where cover screens come in. And while on the book-type foldables the cover screens mimic conventional, non-folding phones, both in size and in functionality, this isn't the case when we talk about flip phones.
Closing a flip phone shut physically constrains the available space for a cover screen. There are, however, ways around this, and Motorola struck gold with its Razr series quite a few generations ago.
The Razr Ultra (2025) is the evolution of the concept of a fully functional cover screen, and it offers an easy way to add all your apps and games to that screen. This minimizes the times you need to open the device and makes life with this flip phone much easier.
In contrast, Samsung still requires an additional download of GoodLock and the MultiStar module to add widgets, and to make matters worse, the display doesn't stretch to the edges of the phone, losing precious space.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 needs to offer a bigger cover screen and think of a different , more intuitive way to use apps and features on that screen. Oh, and have we mentioned that the cover screen of the Motorola Razr Ultra can do 165 Hz refresh rate on BOTH displays? Get to work, Samsung! 2. Better battery life/faster charging
210W might be overkill, but Samsung needs to move up from the slow 25W wired charging on its flip foldables | Image by PhoneArena
When a smartphone runs out of power, it becomes an expensive paperweight. Battery life has been one of the most important metrics for consumers and topped many polls asking about what phone features matter.
The previous Galaxy Z Flip model scored an overall 6h 45min in our battery test, placing it #69 for phones tested in the past 2 years. In contrast, the Motorola Razr Ultra (2025) managed 7h 17m and spot number 52 in the same test.
If we take a look at the browsing score alone, the Razr outlasted the Z Flip by a whopping 8 hours, or 50%, in that test. Hadn't it been for the strange video score, the Razr would've been much higher overall, but even with that abnormality, the phone fares much better than the latest Z Flip.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 needs to put that smallish 4,000 mAh battery in the past and offer a substantial increase to be able to compete.
When we take a look at the fast charging situation, things are even worse. The Galaxy Z Flip series is stuck with 25W wired charging speeds that we won't even dare to label "fast." This translates into charging time, as a full charge of the Flip 6 takes 1h 31 minutes.
The Razr Ultra (2025) charges from zero to full in less than half that time—it takes 43 minutes to fill the battery with the included 68W charging brick.
So, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will definitely benefit from a bump up in charging speeds as well. 3. Better camera system/first periscope telephoto on a flip phone
A periscope zoom lens on a flip phone? Why not, Samsung? | Image by PhoneArena
Samsung upgraded the main camera on the Galaxy Z Flip 6, and this was a successful move, considering the camera score this phone managed in our lab test. The said score of 137 is even higher than what the Motorola Razr Ultra (2025) was able to achieve, but there's another argument to be had.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 could just carry over the same camera system from its predecessor, and this would be the safe bet here. It will be more or less on par with the aforementioned Razr, but a bold move can make the next Z Flip a trendsetter.
A periscope telephoto camera would make the Galaxy Z Flip 7 the perfect camera phone, rivaling conventional camera phones and book-style foldables.
Speaking of which, companies already put periscope cameras in those foldables (e.g., Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Honor Magic V4), so it's a matter of time to start seeing those on flip phones.
Yes, there are physical constraints, but we're sure those will be overcome, and Samsung has the unique opportunity to pave the way in that regard. 4. Different options for the color/back material
Let's knock on wood Samsung decides to go for something fresh this time around | Image by PhoneArena
We're kind of stuck in this glass and metal world we've built for ourselves when it comes to smartphones. And some might say it's our own fault for sticking with it, but there's life beyond glass, figuratively speaking.
Motorola has been experimenting with different smartphone materials for quite some time now, and we had the Kevlar ThinkPhone, the wooden Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, and the leather-back Razr and Razr Plus series.
Let's knock on wood that this trend continues (pun intended), as we personally love different materials on any phone. It transforms the device and adds character without the need for a case.
The Motorola Razr Ultra (2025) offers polymer back and eco-leather options with some cool colors to choose from.
Wouldn't it be great if the Galaxy Z Flip 7 came with something different than the same boring glass back the series has been using since the beginning? 5. Competitive price
Behold the Motorola Razr (2023), starting price $599 | Image by PhoneArena
Ah, here we are with the money subject again. We get it, things are expensive, and in the current economic situation, smartphones probably won't get cheaper anytime soon.
But we also remember the time Motorola launched the Razr (2023) at $599. It was the cheapest flip phone by far and proved that this can be done with a couple of compromises.
We're not saying the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has to be $599 to sell; that's not realistic and downright delusional, but if Samsung manages to return to the $999 price tag for the Z Flip series and not make it more expensive at like $1,100 instead, this will drive sales and help adoption. Conclusion
So, there you have it. The five important things Galaxy Z Flip 7 needs to get right in order to become the best flip phone of 2025. What do you think about it? Which one is the most important to you? Vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Realme GT 7 and 7T go global, first Nothing Phone (3) teaser, Week 22 in review

The Galaxy A57, which is expected in Q1 of 2026, will likely use a new Exynos 1680 chipset. The Exynos 1680 allegedly has the model designation S5E8865 and the codename Terra. No other details are known about it yet, but it is probably safe to assume that it will use an Xclipse GPU just like its predecessor. We saw the first glimpse of the Nothing Phone (3). More specifically, a macro shot of a part of the phone. Not much we can get from it, but perfectly in line with Nothing's style. Motorola's Moto G family is soon going to get another member, the Moto G96. It will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 SoC and we saw images of it. The phone will boast 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. It will have a 6.67-inch pOLED curved screen with a 144 Hz refresh rate, and a 5,500 mAh battery. On the rear, there's a 50 MP main camera using Sony's Lytia LYT-700C sensor, and an 8 MP macro camera. For selfies, you'll get a 32 MP snapper on the front. The device will be offered in Cattleya Orchid, Dresden Blue, Greener Pastures, and Ashleigh Blue colorways. It's expected to cost around INR 22,990 when it lands in India, which right now translates into approximately $270. It's unclear what other markets it might launch in. It hasn't yet been seen on the market. The new premium model will be unveiled in July. It will expand the G family even further. The vanilla costs INR 8,999, which is about $105/€90. The Realme GT 7 and GT 7T made their global debut. The GT 7 uses the Dimensity 9400e chipset and features a 6.8-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, 50 MP main and 2x telephoto cameras and an 8 MP ultrawide shooter. It's powered by a 7,000mAh battery with 120W charging. The GT 7T uses the Dimensity 8400-Max, and lacks a zoom camera, but has the same 7,000mAh battery. The Pixel 10 Pro (or Pixel 10 Pro XL) was spotted on a public beach in Vancouver, Canada, where it was filmed for a TV ad. The video crew wasn't working hard on keeping the phone a mystery, and the person who stumbled upon the set even got a glance at the storyboard (a visual script of all scenes that make up the video clip). Google will launch the Pixel 10 with a new camera feature that will allow users to add multiple people to the same shot. The Pixel 10 series could come in August. The latest flagship killers bring Dimensity chipsets and massive 7,000mAh batteries with 120W charging. It could be the Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL. Comes in four different variants. OnePlus announced a slew of AI features, which will debut alongside the OnePlus 13s. The phone has a dedicated Plus Key on the side, replacing the iconic Alert slider. The new key will summon the AI Mind Space, a place that collects and catalogs information that it can recall later for you. The RedMagic 10S Pro launched in China with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Leading Edition SoC and up to 24GB of RAM. Keeping the temperatures in check is what is known as the ICE-X Cooling System, which uses liquid metal and active air cooling. The company claims it has 250% enhanced thermal conductivity and a 30% larger heat dissipation area that lowers CPU temperatures by an additional 5°C. The Red Magic 10S Pro has a massive 7,500mAh battery with 120W charging, a 6.85-inch 144Hz OLED, and is now on sale. The new customizable Plus Key on the OnePlus 13s to play a major role in accessing these features. Global launch to follow on June 5. The premium model among the trio of new earbuds from Nothing.

Deals: the Galaxy S25 Edge launches as the most expensive S25 phone, plus some iPad deals

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is now available in the US as the pre-order period ended on Friday. That means no more free storage upgrade, but it also opens a path for some discounts. Amazon pairs the S25 Edge with a $50 gift card and, if you buy the 512GB model, you will also get a $70 discount. It's not much, but the phone has been on sale for only a few days and it does mean that the difference between 256GB and 512GB is only $50. The Edge may be impressively thin (5.8mm) and light (163g), but it is also the most expensive Galaxy S25 model at the moment. Yes, the Galaxy S25 Ultra has a higher MSRP, but it also has much bigger discounts at the moment. The base 12/256GB model is $50 less than the Edge (or the same, if you include the gift card) and the 512GB model is only $20 more. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is bulkier (8.2mm, 218g), but it has a larger battery (5,000mAh vs. 3,900mAh) and a larger display (6.9' vs. 6.7'). It also has a 200MP camera and can leverage two telephoto modules for zooming in – a 50MP 5x periscope (111mm) and a 10MP 3x tele (67mm), not to mention that its ultra-wide camera has a 50MP sensor (vs. 12MP). The extra bulk also helps with cooling, so the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy has better sustained performance in the Ultra than in the Edge. The Samsung Galaxy S25+ is the same height and width as the Edge, though it is thicker and heavier (7.3mm, 190g) – check out the 3D comparison to see how they stack up. The Plus doesn't have a 200MP camera – instead it is equipped with a 50MP main and a 10MP 3x (67mm) tele, its ultra-wide is the same as on the Edge (12MP). The battery is 1,000mAh bigger than the Edge. And here is the best part – the S25+ is $350 less than the S25 Edge. If weight is a concern, the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S25 weighs 162g – that's 1g less than the Edge. Impressive engineering on the Edge, considering that the vanilla model has a 6.2' display, not a 6.7' one. However, the battery continues to embarrass the Edge – it is the smallest in the S25 family with the vanilla model beating it by 100mAh. The camera situation is the same as on the S25+. In terms of price, the S25 is under $700. The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is even cheaper – the 8/128GB model is $545 at the moment, but you probably want the 256GB model as storage will get pretty tight over the years. That one is $610 – just $75 less than the vanilla S25 and $140 less than the S25+. The FE has a 6.7' screen like the S25+ (well, not quite, it's not an LTPO panel) and a similar camera setup (50MP main, 8MP 3x/75mm tele and 12MP ultra-wide). However, it uses the Exynos 2400e – a good chip, but not as good as the Snapdragon 8 Elite. You may want to spend extra and get an S25 flagship model as the savings with the FE aren't that big. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ is a 12.4' tablet powered by the Dimensity 9300+. It has DeX multitasking in all its forms – on its own screen and on external ones (both wired and wireless). The tablet is rated IP68 for water resistance and ships with an S Pen. It has expandable storage, four AKG speakers and a 10,090mAh battery with 45W charging. We also checked out Apple's offerings and the iPad starts at just over $300. This is the refreshed model from March with the Apple A16 chip – making it the one current iPad not to support Apple Intelligence. Oh well. This slate has an 11' IPS LCD (60Hz, of course) with Apple Pencil support. The Apple iPad Air 11 and 13 were also refreshed in March and now feature Apple M3 chips. These are massively powerful, but iPadOS doesn't quite know what to do with all that power. Yes, there is Stage Manager (Apple's multitasking solution for iPad), but it's not on the same level as DeX. Even the 13' Air costs less than the Galaxy Tab S10+, though, so it should be considered. Note that storage is not expandable. You can go a step up in power with the Apple iPad Pro 11 and 13 – these have the Apple M4. Again, you can't get quite as much use out of the M-series chip as you would with a MacBook. Still, the Pros have better displays – bright tandem OLEDs with 120Hz refresh rate, compared to the 60Hz IPS LCDs of the Airs. Note that the variants linked below have the regular glass. If you get a 1TB or 2TB model, you can also pick the nano-textured glass option (which cuts down on reflections), but that is a $100 upgrade (on top of a pricey storage upgrade). The Apple iPad mini was refreshed late last year – with an Apple A17 Pro chipset, which does run Apple Intelligence. The petite tablet is up to $100, depending on which storage option you pick. We don't see many small tablets with high-end chips these days, making the iPad mini something of a rarity. Finally, we noticed that the PlayStation 5 Pro is $50 off its launch price. That caught our eye because Sony recently raised prices in other parts of the world. Sony PlayStation 5 Pro $50 off You can also pick up an additional controller – the basic DualSense or the DualSense Edge. The Edge has extra controls (paddles on the back), remappable buttons and replaceable analog sticks. We may get a commission from qualifying sales.

Deals: the Galaxy S25 series comes with a free tablet, Google Pixels heavily discounted

Amazon UK is offering a free Galaxy Tab A9+ with its whole flagship line – but that's just the cherry on top. There are discounts across the board and you also get £100 Samsung Credit with each phone. This offer ends on June 26 – more details on how to claim the tablet here. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra deal is pretty wild – the phone is £150 off, then you get an additional £150 off at checkout. This drops the price of the 256GB model to below £1,000. Don't forget about the free tablet and Samsung Credit either. But the price is interesting because £1,000 is how much you would spend on an S25+ right now (despite discounts) and is £100 less than the S25 Edge price (not necessarily, read below). Speaking of, here is the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. With pre-orders done, you actually have to pay extra for the upgrade to 512GB. However, a discount, some credit and a free tablet help soften the blow. Even more so if you are a Prime or Prime Student subscriber. The Galaxy S25+ is just not worth it at the moment – the 512GB variant has a minor discount, the 256GB has none, so they are just £21 apart. But you'd be better off getting the S25 Ultra – the 256GB variant is cheaper! The vanilla Galaxy S25 has a discount on all storage capacities, dropping it to £700 for the base 128GB. Keep that price in mind as we head over to the Pixel side of the store. The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are £300 off. With that, the smaller Pro costs the same as the vanilla S25 – despite having 4GB more RAM and proper 48MP sensors in the periscope (5x vs. 10MP 3x on the Galaxy) and ultra-wide cameras. Here's a detailed comparison between the 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL. As for the Pixel 9 Pro XL, the 256GB variant is £50 less than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. You don't get a free tablet, but you do get a £50 coupon for the Pixel Buds Pro 2. This coupon is available for all current Pixels except the a-models. Here's the Pixel 9 Pro XL vs. Galaxy S25 Ultra head-to-head article. If you want a smaller phone but don't want to spend Pro money, the Pixel 9 is £100 less than the 9 Pro. You can check out our Pixel 9 vs. 9 Pro article, but the better cameras and extra perks are a great upgrade for the price. For an actually cheap Google phone there are the Pixel 9a and 8a. The latter is a 2024 model, which means it uses the less-than-perfect Tensor G3, but it is around £100 cheaper than the 9a. Google Pixel 8a £177 off Read our review 8/128GB - £324 at Amazon UK Unlike the 8a and 9a, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold does come with a £50 coupon for the Pixel Buds Pro 2. However, even with a hefty £450 discount it is still quite pricey. Not as pricey as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, though, itself with a decent discount – and £100 Samsung Credit and a free Galaxy Tab A9+. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is also part of the offer with a nice discount of its own, Samsung Credit and the free tablet. Of course, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are a couple of months away from launch and they will have early bird deals – though their prices probably won't go this low for quite a while. We may get a commission from qualifying sales.
