Cat killer jailed: Ang Mo Kio man gets 14 months for throwing felines off HDB blocks
SINGAPORE, Feb 8 — A man who abused five cats in the Ang Mo Kio township of Singapore killing two by throwing them off public housing blocks, has been sentenced to 14 months in jail, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported yesterday.
Barrie Lin Pengli was also banned from owning any animals for a year following his release, the report added.
The 32-year-old had pleaded guilty to three charges of animal cruelty, with two additional charges taken into consideration.
Deputy Principal District Judge Kessler Soh, in sentencing Lin yesterday, described his actions as 'abhorrent' and acknowledged the public distress they caused.
While the judge recognised Lin's major depressive disorder at the time, he ruled that the 'horrific' nature of the offences warranted punishment.
One of Lin's offences occurred while he was already under psychological treatment and out on bail, justifying a harsher sentence for that instance.
However, the judge noted that the 24-month sentence sought by the prosecution was 'somewhat excessive' when compared to similar past cases.
Lin's lack of reoffending since December 2021 and his positive rehabilitative prospects were also taken into account.
The prosecution is considering whether to appeal against the sentence and is expected to update the court on February 11.
According to CNA, between 2019 and 2021, Lin targeted community cats in Ang Mo Kio to cope with emotional distress. Initially kicking them, he escalated to trapping them in airtight bags.
In April and May 2020, he killed two cats by throwing them off HDB blocks and stomping on one that survived the fall. Police cameras and eyewitness reports led to his arrest.
Released on bail, he underwent psychological treatment and secured a job. However, in December 2021, he attacked another cat, causing severe injuries.
Lin's lawyer argued he was under stress from unemployment and family issues, highlighting his cooperation and remorse.
The defence sought a shorter jail term, arguing a harsher sentence would be 'crushing' for a first-time offender.
The maximum penalty for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal in Singapore is 18 months in jail, a S$15,000 (RM50,000) fine, or both.

If fire departments on land have problems unleashing the torrent of water needed to extinguish a single burning EV, the crew of a ship doesn't stand a chance against hundreds of flaming lithium-ion batteries. A cargo ship carrying around 3,000 vehicles across the Pacific Ocean caught fire on Tuesday. The Morning Midas, a 600-foot cargo ship, was in the middle of a voyage from Yantai, China to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico when the fire broke out. Zodiac Maritime, the ship's London-based operator, noted that smoke was first spotted on a deck carrying 800 electric vehicles. Once the blaze got out of control, the vessel's 22 crew members abandoned ship via lifeboat. With the ship roughly 300 southwest of Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched aircrews and a cutter to respond to the emergency, according to Bloomberg. The evacuating crew on the lifeboat was transferred by the USCG to one of the three other merchants at the scene, helping to fight the fire. Zodiac Maritime wouldn't comment on which automaker's vehicles were burning to a crisp. This is an ongoing story, and we will update when we know more about the fate of the Morning Midas. The salt in ocean water is electrically conductive and would fuel an ongoing blaze. Current guidelines for crews emphasize early detection and limiting water use by letting EVs burn while containing any potential spreading. British tourist killed in jet ski accident in Albania
A British tourist has died and another is in critical condition following a jet ski accident in Albania. The 34-year-old man lost his life after coming off a jet ski near the Kavaja Rock area in Durrës on Sunday morning (1 June). The two British citizens reportedly lost control of the jet ski and fell into the sea. Emergency services responded to the incident at Durrës Port, where the man was declared dead. An unidentified 31-year-old British woman was also 'transported to hospital in serious condition' following the incident, said border police. Durrës police told Albania news outlet CNA: 'At around 11:15, on 01.06.2025, the Port Durrës Border Police services were notified that, in the area opposite the Kavaja Rock, two citizens who were sailing on a jet ski, are suspected of having lost control of the vessel during manoeuvres and fallen into the water.' 'Border Police Services, after receiving the notification, immediately went by watercraft to assist the two citizens who had fallen into the water, transporting them to the port, with the aim of transporting them to the hospital.' According to A2 CNN, Durrës police have since arrested the jet ski provider for operating without full documentation and life jackets for customers. The Foreign Office said that it had not been approached for assistance in this case.
