Royals designate Hunter Renfroe for assignment
The Royals announced they have designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment and have called up infielder Nick Loftin from Triple-A Omaha. Renfroe was hitting just .182/.241/.242 with no home runs in 35 games and was worth -1.5 WAR, according to Baseball Reference.
The Royals originally signed Renfroe to a two-year, $13 million deal before the 2024 season. He has enjoyed five 25+ home run seasons in his career, and the Royals were hoping he could provide power in the middle of the lineup. Although his offensive numbers were declining, he was coming off a 20-home run season when the Royals signed him.

But he struggled in 2024, hitting .229/.297/.392 with 15 home runs, the lowest total in a full season in his career. This year his power seemed zapped, and he had just six extra-base hits in 108 plate appearances. Even worse, he was a defensive liability and his plus arm had deteriorated.
The Royals have seven days to trade Renfroe, or place him on waivers, although with $7.5 million owed him this year, it seems unlikely anyone would take him. The Royals will be obligated to pay his remaining salary minus the minimum wage should any team pick him up after clearing waivers. The Royals cut ties with struggling reliever Chris Stratton earlier this week.
Loftin is a former first-round pick who has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Royals, hitting .229/.307/.295 in 75 games. He was hitting .295/.451/.468 with four home runs in 40 games for Triple-A Omaha and his 39 walks are the fourth-most in all minor leagues.

Nashville and Salt Lake City have reached out to Royals, Missouri senator says
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Day three of Missouri's special session was off to a very slow start Wednesday afternoon. Lawmakers were supposed to gavel in at 10 a.m.—but as of 1:45 p.m., that hadn't happened. Private deal-making is likely going on after Republican Governor Mike Kehoe brought back state senators Monday to try and get a deal passed for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. A package for the teams passed out of the Senate Committee on Fiscal Oversight Tuesday. The package, called Senate Bill 3, is supposed to be brought up on the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon. Republican State Senator Kurtis Gregory of Saline County and Marshall, Missouri, supports Gov. Kehoe's Show Me Sports Investment Act. It allows the teams to bond up to the amount that they generate in tax revenue the year of their application. During Tuesday's committee meeting, Gregory said Nashville, Tennessee, and Salt Lake City, Utah, have both reached out to the Royals within the past 24 hours. 'Let's say we get 20 years in, and the city of Nashville or Salt Lake City, which both I have learned over the last 24 hours have actually made sales pitches to the Royals, makes one that they absolutely cannot turn down, and they say, 'we're going to move,'' Gregory said to the committee Tuesday. 'Then the sports team has to pay back all the money that the state of Missouri has spent on those bond payments throughout that period of time, so that's the responsible portion of this. There is a claw back provision to it.' The Royals have not confirmed what Senator Gregory said. He was just put on the Fiscal Oversight Committee on Monday; state Senate President Cindy O'Laughlin got a definite 'yes vote' on that nine-member committee by putting him on – and he's the sponsor of Senate Bill 3. Former MLB exec blasts Royals' 'irresponsible' move with top prospect Jac Caglianone
Kansas City was ecstatic when the Royals called up their top prospect, Jac Caglianone, but one former MLB executive called it the "single-most irresponsible move I've seen in quite a long time." Former Miami Marlins team president David Samson vocalized his displeasure with the Royals' front office bringing Caglianone up to the big leagues despite his success in the minors. It wasn't Caglianone's performance Samson was referencing in his opinion. It has to do with service time. "If he's going to be that good, how do you call him up now where he will hit arbitration a full year earlier than if they waited until after around June 17?" Samson wondered. "I have no idea how a team that's not in the top 10 of payroll is not paying attention to dates. And the Royals forcing the issue, that's a bunch of horse hockey. You take the extra two weeks because it gives you an extra year and compounds itself in arbitration." Caglianone will reach arbitration a year early because Kansas City brought him up before the Super Two deadline. Service time has been a debated topic for some time among baseball experts and fans because teams do have the ability to keep prospects down on the farm to ensure another year of control. But Kansas City clearly doesn't mind bringing up Caglianone now. He was just called up, but Caglianone is one of the top prospects in baseball and has been raking in the minors this year with a .322/.389/.593 slash line with 15 homers and 56 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A. Samson believes calling up Caglianone now puts more pressure on him to perform right away because of the service time scenario. "This is a $10 million decision they made. He better be Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and he better start now," Samson said. Caglianone went 0-for-5 in his major league debut Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kansas City is hoping Caglianone can get acclimated to the big leagues sooner rather than later, and they're hoping to reach the playoffs in back-to-back seasons after breaking an eight-year skid last year with a wild-card berth. The last time the Royals reached the playoffs before that was the 2015 campaign, when they defeated the New York Mets in the World Series.
