Indus Treaty arbitration court is illegal, says India
NEW DELHI: India on Friday rejected the Court of Arbitration under the
Indus Waters Treaty
, describing it as illegal and refusing to recognise its authority to hear cases related to the Kishenganga and Ratle hydropower projects in J&K.
"India has never recognised the existence in law of this so-called Court of Arbitration, and India's position has all along been that the constitution of this so-called arbitral body is in itself a serious breach of the Indus Waters Treaty and consequently any proceedings before this forum and any award or decision taken by it are also for that reason illegal and per se void," MEA said.
India's reaction came after the Hague-based Court of Arbitration rendered a "Supplemental Award" on the competence of the court in an arbitration initiated by Pakistan against India.
In the Supplemental Award, the court considered its competence to address Pakistan's request to intervene over the decision made by India on April 23 to keep the 1960 Treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Rejecting the authority of the court, MEA said, "No Court of Arbitration, much less this illegally constituted arbitral body which has no existence in the eye of law, has the jurisdiction to examine the legality of India's actions in exercise of its rights as a sovereign."

Iran fired more than 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted, but those that got through caused damage in many areas and killed 28 people. Saturday's ceremonies were the first public funerals for top commanders since the ceasefire, and Iranian state television reported that they were for 60 people in total, including four women and four children. Authorities closed government offices to allow public servants to attend the ceremonies. Iran has always insisted its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes. But Israel views it as an existential threat and said its military campaign was necessary to prevent Iran from building an atomic weapon.

Guntur: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday urged the police department to transform Andhra Pradesh into a crime-free state using technology. Speaking at the 'AI for AP Police - Hackathon 2025' event, the Chief Minister cited the Viveka murder case as an example of how technology can be effectively used in investigations. The hackathon, organised by the AP police department and four US-based AI companies, focused on leveraging technology for crime control and accelerated investigations. Over 160 teams participated, with CM Naidu engaging them in discussions on how technology can enhance police services and improve performance. Addressing the conference, Chandrababu Naidu stated, 'Development will only happen if law and order are under control. That's why, even when I was the Chief Minister of the united state, I gave high priority to law and order.' Referring to the Viveka murder case, he said, 'Allegations were made against me, and I was criticised with phrases like 'Naraasura Rakta Charitra'. However, the CBI, by using technological methods like Google Takeout in its investigation, brought the facts to light.' 'We managed to control crime even without AI. Now, technology is available, and evidence is easily accessible. If mistakes are made, the government will take necessary action. Youth should also benefit from technology. In the past, we promoted IT. Now, through Quantum Valley, we are going to showcase Telugu prowess. Silicon Valley in America, and Quantum Valley here,' he said. Earlier, welcoming the guests to the Hackathon, DGP Harish Kumar Gupta highlighted AP's legacy as a technology pioneer, noting how its eCOPS platform became the national CCTNS standard. He stated that the hackathon, conceived just three months ago with knowledge partner 4SightAI, focuses on eight high-impact, real-world use cases across productivity, intelligence, investigation, and cybersecurity, designed for direct deployment and potential scaling to other government departments. The DGP noted that the IndiaAI Division from MeitY is supporting the initiative, envisioning it as a model for AI-First Governance nationwide. Global AI communities are closely watching, as AP's use cases mirror unresolved challenges in public safety worldwide. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu stresses AI's role in preventing crimes
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu underscored the vital role of technology in ensuring law and order, stating that peace and security are essential for investment and development. Speaking after inaugurating the 'AI 4 Andhra Police Hackathon' in Guntur on Friday, he urged the police to fully adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced tools for crime prevention and investigation. 'A State can prosper only when law and order are firmly under control. Technology must become a driving force in policing, making Andhra Pradesh a model for crime-free governance,' Naidu affirmed. The AI hackathon, jointly organised by the State police and four US-based AI firms, saw participation from over 160 teams focusing on AI solutions for policing. On the occasion, Naidu interacted with participants and stressed the need for technology-driven, data-backed policing, moving beyond traditional methods. 'We have introduced WhatsApp Governance for citizen services and are expanding CCTV and drone surveillance across the State,' he said, adding, 'The days of relying solely on traditional policing methods are over. It is encouraging to see AP Police recognising the importance of technology and organising this innovative event.' Pointing to the former minister YS Vivekananda Reddy murder case, Naidu said, 'There were many baseless allegations against me in connection with the case. I was targeted with defamatory slogans like 'blood history'. However, the truth came out through scientific investigation and digital tools like Google Takeout, used effectively by the CBI.' Issuing a warning to criminal elements, Naidu stated, 'Those involved in rowdyism, ganja trade, and crimes against women can expect the hammer to come down hard, with technology providing irrefutable evidence.' He further stated that his government will always encourage young people to join the technological revolution. 'Earlier, we promoted IT in Andhra Pradesh. Now, we are preparing to showcase Telugu talent globally through the upcoming Quantum Valley project.
