Popular Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons opens in Norfolk
Popular Canadian fast food chain Tim Hortons is selling its original blend coffee, hand-dipped and glazed doughnuts and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches in Norfolk.
The chain opened a location at the former Boston Market site at Poplar Hall Drive and North Military Highway. As of Monday, customers could only use the drive-thru. Staff said the store needs to work out some kinks.
The name might sound familiar to some because in 2010, 'Timmies' had a restaurant at Naval Station Norfolk but it closed years ago.
The Norfolk restaurant is the only location in Virginia, according to the company website, and folks are delighted it's in Hampton Roads.
'Going to Tim Hortons is a Canadian tradition,' said Brendan O'Hallarn, a Canada native who works at Old Dominion University.
His sister warned him when he moved to Williamsburg 17 years ago that the Hortons pangs would never go away. He gets his fix every summer when he drives to Ontario. 'Tim's' is the first stop he makes minutes after crossing the border.
Now, he doesn't have to travel far. He waited in a long drive-thru line on Saturday and posted on social media that every Canadian expat in Hampton Roads is planning a trip there.
U.S. customers can join the movement and grab some goodies too. The coffee shop is planning a grand opening. The company hasn't responded to repeated questions for details.

Newly engaged couple among Air India crash victims
A couple who went to India to celebrate their engagement have been named among the victims of the Air India plane crash. More than 240 people were killed on Thursday when a Boeing 787 bound for Gatwick crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad. Prayers have been taking place at a temple in Leicester on Saturday to remember the victims, including local volunteer Hardik Avaiya and his fiancee Vibhooti Patel. Mr Avaiya, who regularly helped out at the Shree Hanuman Temple in Melton Road, was described by the temple's secretary as a "model devotee and volunteer". The plane was carrying 242 people when it crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, in western India. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian on the flight. The Leicester temple held a hymn festival to pray for all victims and come to terms with the tragedy. Dhaval Patel, who worked with Mr Avaiya, said: "We were on our way to pick him up when I got a call to say a plane to Gatwick had crashed in Ahmedabad. "So we immediately checked the ticket and matched the flight number and we just cried." Staff said Mr Avaiya attended a couple of times a week to help with events at the temple. Mr Patel said: "He didn't like the limelight, he just worked in the background to get things done. "He was jovial, liked to crack a joke. He was dedicated, hard working, very pleasant. "He was model devotee and volunteer because he had selfless service." "When he left he asked the staff if the temple needed anything bringing back, that's the kind of person he was." While the staff at the temple heard about the crash early on, news of the casualties only came through afterwards and confirmation came from Mr Avaiya's friends. Mr Patel said: "We were absolutely devastated, its like losing a family member. "Events like this people come together and give their respects and gives us some sort of a release from the feeling of shock and feeling distraught. "It's a feeling of helplessness, emptiness, normally if something goes wrong, we can sort things out but this has been very difficult." Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Fitch Reaffirms The Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS)'s Credit Ratings; Outlook Steady
The Bank of Nova Scotia (NYSE:BNS) is one of the best Goldman Sachs bank stocks. On June 9, Fitch Ratings maintained the Bank of Nova Scotia's long-term and short-term issuer default ratings at 'AA-' and 'F1+', respectively, maintaining a stable outlook. These ratings indicate the constraints in Scotiabank's operating environment, reflected by its average operating environment score of 'aa-'. This score factors in the risks and revenue from primary end markets, such as Canada, the United States, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. BNS maintains a leading retail banking position in Canada. Scotiabank is working on a five-year plan launched in December 2023 to grow its core businesses, strengthen relationships with clients, and improve how the bank operates. As part of this plan, BNS bought a 14.9% stake in KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) and simplified its operations in Latin America by exiting Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama. Fitch observed that, given its significant presence in Mexico, BNS could feel more of an impact from new US tariffs than other Canadian banks. Broader economic challenges in Mexico and Canada could also put pressure on the quality of its loan book. In Q2 2025, the percentage of impaired loans rose to 90bps, up from 83bps the year before, mostly due to weaker performance in Canadian retail and commercial lending. Credit quality has been a consistent challenge for BNS compared to other domestic banks, again tied to its international exposure. A businessman's hand pointing to a graph on a projector screen illustrating economic trends. Revenue at BNS has improved due to better loan management and stronger margins, but near-term profit pressure remains as the bank continues to realign its operations. To guard against tariff-related risks, it has increased loan-loss provisions. Capital levels are solid, with a CET1 ratio of 13.2%, providing a strong buffer in uncertain conditions. Fitch does not expect a ratings upgrade soon. A more optimistic outlook would require lower exposure to emerging markets and reduced risk from Canadian household debt and housing. While we acknowledge the potential of BNS as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
