WhatsApp 'concerned' services to be blocked after Iran calls to delete app
WASHINGTON - WhatsApp said it was 'concerned' that its services would be blocked in Iran after a state broadcaster urged the public to delete the messaging app, saying it was sharing data with arch-rival Israel.
State television IRIB appealed to Iranians on June 17 to delete WhatsApp from their phones, alleging that the app collected users' personal data and 'last known locations and communications', and shared them with Israel.
On June 18, Israel and Iran exchanged fire for the sixth straight day, with Israel saying it struck a nuclear site near Tehran.
A WhatsApp spokesperson dismissed the IRIB claims, saying all messages sent on the app were 'end-to-end encrypted', with only the sender and recipient able to access them.
'We're concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most,' the spokesperson told AFP.
'We do not track your precise location, we don't keep logs of who everyone is messaging and we do not track the personal messages people are sending one another.'
WhatsApp also does not 'provide bulk information to any government'.
Israel launched a massive bombing campaign against Iran on June 13 that has hit nuclear and military facilities, as well as residential areas.
Iran has responded by launching missiles and drones, and early June 18 said it had fired hypersonic missiles at Israel.
Tehran announced on June 13 that it was placing temporary restrictions on the internet for the duration of the conflict.
Numerous sites and apps have since been at least partially inaccessible.
The authorities appealed to the public on June 17 to 'minimise their use of equipment connected to the internet and to take appropriate precautions' online.
For their own safety, civil servants and their security teams have been banned from using any connected devices, including smartphones, watches and laptops during the Israeli air offensive.
In the wake of nationwide protests triggered by the 2022 death in custody of Ms Mahsa Amini, Iranian authorities had blocked several apps and online services, including WhatsApp. AFP

Ukraine says it held talks with US on supporting defence projects under joint fund

REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/ File Photo Ukraine says it held talks with US on supporting defence projects under joint fund KYIV - Senior Ukrainian officials spoke with their U.S. counterparts about the possibility of supporting defence projects in Ukraine under a joint investment fund set up last month, Kyiv's first deputy prime minister said on Wednesday. Kyiv is aiming to shore up support from Washington, which has been its top military backer, as it seeks to end its grinding war with Russia, now in its fourth year. Yulia Svyrydenko said the discussions included U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and took place during the G7 summit in Canada. "Talks focused on expanding the fund's mandate to support defense sector projects inside Ukraine," she wrote on social media platform X. The two countries established a joint reconstruction fund as part of a deal allowing U.S. access to Ukrainian minerals, which Kyiv hopes will pave the way for more support against Russia's full-scale invasion. Svyrydenko did not specify the nature of the defence projects. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has previously asked the U.S. for a licence to produce critical Patriot air-defence systems used to shoot down ballistic missiles. He has also said Kyiv is willing to purchase weapons from the United States, which under the Trump administration has not announced any new arms packages for Ukraine. China's dual aircraft carrier training in Pacific signals ambition, but draws Japan's wariness

PHOTO: REUTERS – China has deployed two aircraft carriers simultaneously to the Western Pacific for the first time, signalling its intention to challenge the United States' long-held maritime dominance in the area. In a rare move, Japan's Defence Ministry on June 17 released a map plotting the passage of the warships, Liaoning and Shandong, towards a strategic line of defence in the Western Pacific known as the 'second island chain'. The carriers were spotted in waters east of the Philippines on June 16. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
