Defending champions Senegal face seven-time winners Nigeria in blockbuster clash

Seven-time champions Nigeria will face defending title holders Senegal in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025 on Monday in Ismailia.
It is a meeting between two of the most storied sides in the competition's history, but both arrive at this stage with question marks despite their pedigree.
Nigeria remain unbeaten after the group stage, but their form has been patchy. The Flying Eagles opened with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Tunisia, then shared the spoils in a goalless draw with Morocco before being held 2-2 by an already eliminated Kenya.
That unexpected slip against Kenya—after initially leading—has raised doubts about the team's defensive discipline and focus.
Coach Ladan Bosso is expected to rely on the attacking drive of Lawrence Ouma, who scored twice in the group stage, along with the creativity of midfielders like Yusuf Ibrahim to unlock the opposition. However, Nigeria's struggle to maintain control and kill off matches may prove costly against an opponent with Senegal's resilience.
Senegal, meanwhile, endured a dramatic path to the last eight. The defending champions were stunned 1-0 by Ghana in their second match after a draw with Central African Republic left them on the brink.
But with their title defence hanging by a thread, Les Lionceaux delivered when it mattered—beating DR Congo 2-0 on the final day to progress.
It was a match that restored belief in coach Serigne Saliou Dia's men, who had previously gone 13 U20 AFCON games unbeaten before the Ghana defeat.
Cheikh Tidiane Thiam, scorer of two goals so far, and Ibrahima Dieng, who netted a penalty in the last group match, remain crucial to Senegal's hopes.
This quarter-final is a repeat of the 2015 final, which Nigeria won 1-0 in Dakar. But with both sides still finding their rhythm in Egypt, the game is wide open.
Senegal will be hoping to become the first team to successfully defend the U20 AFCON title since Ghana did it in 2011. Nigeria, meanwhile, are chasing an eighth crown and a return to continental dominance after a semi-final exit in 2023.
Kick-off is at 12:00 GMT on Monday at the Ismailia Stadium, and it promises to be a tactical chess match between two sides with history, hunger, and heavy expectations.

Sundowns ready for redemption on club World Cup return

· Tactical evolution under Cardoso gives Sundowns a fighting chance · Ronwen Williams: reigning CAF Goalkeeper of the Year anchors defence · Ribeiro Costa and Zwane: A sparkling partnership lighting up the attack Mamelodi Sundowns are set to make a long-awaited return to the FIFA Club World Cup, nearly a decade after their last appearance on the global stage. The South African champions, widely regarded as one of the most stylish and consistent clubs on the African continent, come into the tournament with renewed ambition and a far more formidable squad than in previous years. Their qualification follows a string of dominant seasons in domestic and continental football, earning them the distinction of being CAF's second-best ranked team over the past four years. The draw, however, has presented a stern test for the Brazilians. Grouped alongside German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, reigning Brazilian champions Fluminense, and a disciplined Ulsan Hyundai from South Korea, the path to progression is anything but straightforward. Still, the beauty of competition football lies in its unpredictability — a factor that Sundowns will be eager to use to their advantage. Head coach Miguel Cardoso, who took over the reins in December 2024, has already stamped his tactical authority on the squad. Under his guidance, Sundowns have adopted a dynamic and fluid 4-2-3-1 formation that emphasizes possession-based football with vertical penetration. This setup has proven ideal for unleashing the attacking talents of Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Iqraam Rayners, who have combined for 30 goals and 18 assists this season. The return of midfield maestro, Themba Zwane will be another source of creativity for the former African champions who are looking at making a name for themselves on the global stage. At the back, reigning CAF Goalkeeper of the Year, Ronwen Williams continues to provide stability and leadership, adding a vital layer of experience in high-pressure scenarios. The key to Sundowns' success lies in their opening match against Ulsan Hyundai. A win there would significantly boost their chances of advancing and could inject the confidence needed to challenge the more established powerhouses of Europe and South America. Moreover, Cardoso's side may benefit from the relative unfamiliarity their style and players pose to opponents who rarely encounter African club football. Sundowns' last appearance at the Club World Cup in 2016 ended in disappointment, failing to advance beyond the early stages. This time, with tactical maturity, attacking firepower, and a clearer identity, the South African champions are determined to rewrite their international story — and perhaps even make history. Esperance de Tunis: Africa's silent threat in the FIFA Club World Cup

· A group of giants - but evident gaps to exploit · Maher Kanzani's tactical blueprint paying off · Belaili to play a key figure for the Blood and Gold Four-time African champions Esperance Sportive de Tunis are no strangers to the global stage. Though they arrive at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup without the label of reigning TotalEnergies CAF Champions League winners, their sustained excellence over the past four seasons has earned them a deserved place among the world's elite. Finalists in last season's TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and falling just short to Al Ahly SC, the Tunisian giants are now poised to test themselves in one of the most competitive groups of the expanded 32-team global tournament. Drawn alongside European heavyweights Chelsea, Mexican side Club León, and South American powerhouses Flamengo, the task is formidable—but not insurmountable. While Chelsea, recent winners of the UEFA Europa Conference League, enter the group as favourites, Esperance have proven they can hold their own against technically superior opposition. Brazilian outfit Flamengo, despite their rich history, have struggled for domestic consistency, and León have shown defensive vulnerabilities. These cracks are precisely where Esperance's discipline and tactical nous may shine. Under the guidance of head coach Maher Kanzani, the Tunisian giants have maintained a structured and pragmatic 4-3-3 system. The midfield operates with intelligence and patience, anchored by a deep-lying playmaker, while the wings offer explosive transitions and width. It's a formula that has brought both local and continental success. Youcef Belaili continues to be the heartbeat of the side, his nine goals and six assists this season reflecting both creativity and cutting edge. But Esperance's strength lies in its emerging core. Brazilian playmaker Yan Sasse has netted 10 goals in all competitions, while Houssem Tika's seven assists speak to his growing influence. At left-back, Mohamed Amine Ben Yamida's overlapping runs and delivery from wide areas have added a new dimension to their build-up play. With fixtures against quality opposition, Esperance's path to the knockout rounds won't be easy—but it is possible. If they can stifle Chelsea's rhythm, expose León's midfield gaps, and disrupt Flamengo's tempo, a place in the Round of 16 is within reach. In a tournament built for surprises, the Blood and Gold could well be writing the most unexpected chapter. Al Ahly eye global upset in star-studded FIFA Club World Cup

African giants Al Ahly SC are once again preparing to showcase their pedigree on the global stage as they gear up for the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The Egyptian powerhouse and record African champions , will enter the tournament aiming to translate their continental dominance into international recognition. Drawn into one of the tournament's most high-profile groups, Al Ahly will face Inter Miami (USA), Palmeiras (Brazil), and FC Porto (Portugal) in what promises to be a stern test of their credentials in Group A. Despite the glamour surrounding Inter Miami — a club boasting global icons like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets — Al Ahly will be equally confident as one of the best African clubs who are also not new to the Club World Cup. The American side, while heavy on star power, still lacks the cohesion and high-level tournament experience that Al Ahly have developed through decades of continental competition. However, it's Palmeiras and FC Porto who may pose more systemic threats. Palmeiras, the reigning Brazilian champions, bring relentless intensity, tactical organisation, and depth — hallmarks of modern South American football. FC Porto, a storied European club with a reputation for technical precision and youth development, offer another layer of challenge with their quick passing game and European match temperament. Now under the leadership of Spaniard Jose Riveiro, who took over the reins just a few weeks ago after a successful tenure with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Al Ahly have the added advantage of a coach who knows how to win cup competitions. Emam Ashour has emerged as a central figure in this tactical setup, contributing 9 goals and 4 assists so far this season. His energy and creativity will be vital in unlocking opposition defences. Slovenian forward Nejc Gradisar has brought versatility and flair to the frontline, while fan favourites Afsha and Taher Mohamed continue to offer consistent offensive threat. Al Ahly have built a reputation for overachieving on the world stage, including multiple third-place finishes at past Club World Cups. While Group A is undoubtedly challenging, the Cairo club's rich tournament experience, tactical cohesion, and winning mentality make them a potential dark horse. Al Ahly SC FIFA Club World Cup Group A Fixtures: Sunday, 15 June: Al Ahly vs Inter Miami - 00h00 GMT Thursday, 19 June: Palmeiras vs Al Ahly – 16h00 GMT Tuesday, 24 June: FC Porto vs Al Ahly – 01h00 GMT
