One child dead, another critical after their inflatable is hit by speed boat in North Vancouver

Yahoo8 hours ago

A fun Saturday evening on the water in North Vancouver ended in tragedy when two kids being towed by boat in an inflatable tube were allegedly hit by a speed boat, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition.
North Vancouver RCMP and other first responders were called to the waters off Cates Park at about 6:30 p.m.
Emergency crews tried to give the children life-saving measures but one died at the waterfront. The second child was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
The operator of the speed boat was arrested and is in custody while police investigate the cause of the fatal crash.
'Alcohol and speed may have been a factor in the collision,' said RCMP Cpl. Mansoor Sahak in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
'Our sincerest condolences to the child's family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss of life,' said Sahak, who said victim services has been called in and is supporting the family.
He said anyone who needs help dealing with the 'tragic incident' can call victim services at 604-969-7540.
Anyone who saw the crash or what happened beforehand, or took video at the scene, is asked to call investigators at 604-985-1311.
'Police have received multiple calls from witnesses, but there may be more out there,' said Sahak.
Eight units from B.C. Emergency Health Services, including an infant care team and a helicopter, along with crews from the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, assisted police at the scene.
'This was a major incident that required a response from multiple agencies. North Vancouver RCMP would like to thank everyone involved,' said Sahak.

Silver Alert issued after 32-year-old goes missing in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Police have issued a Silver Alert and are seeking the public's assistance in locating Alexa Smith, a 32-year-old woman who was last seen on Sunday morning near Harbison Avenue West and Watt Street. Smith is white, 4'11, heavier build with short blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, beige sweatpants and light runners. Kiana Pott, Smith's younger sister, says she is concerned about her. "She sometimes is nonverbal. She doesn't talk much. She's good, but she's been in and out of the hospital for a little bit, so she could be going on a mental break right now and just wandered away," said Pott. Smith's mother, Dana Smith, says the police have been looking for her daughter, but so far has not heard of any sightings of her. A Silver Alert is activated when a vulnerable adult is reported missing. Anyone with information on Smith's whereabouts can contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.

One dead after Saturday night shooting in Toronto's west end: police

A male in his teens is dead after a shooting in Toronto's west end on Saturday night, police said. Police said they responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Emmett Avenue and Jane Street just after 10 p.m., where officers found the victim with a gunshot wound. Det. Sgt. Phillip Campbell said the male was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. "We can understand how concerning incidents like this are to members of the community," Campbell said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. "We want to assure the public that we are dedicating all necessary resources to this investigation to find those responsible." Campbell said police do not have a suspect description at this time, but said the suspect fled after the shooting. He said officers will remain in the area as they canvass for video footage and witnesses. "It's way early. There's lots of people that we want to interview. There's lots of family that we wanna talk to. As you can imagine, it is pretty sensitive to some people," Campbell said. Campbell urged anyone with information to contact investigators. "Every time this happens, somebody loses somebody they love and care about, and it's pretty harmful," he said. "It has a ripple effect on the community."
