Finn Allen's Record-Breaking 151 Leads Unicorns To Big Win In MLC 2025 Opener
Last Updated:
Finn Allen's 51-ball 151 led the San Francisco Unicorns to a 123-run win over Washington Freedom in MLC 2025, breaking multiple T20 records including most sixes in an innings.
Finn Allen dazzled on the opening night of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 with an extraordinary innings, blasting a 51-ball 151 to propel the San Francisco Unicorns to a commanding 123-run victory over defending champions Washington Freedom.
Allen's remarkable performance shattered multiple records. He became the fastest player to score 150 in T20 history and surpassed Chris Gayle's long-standing record of 18 sixes in a T20 innings by hitting 19 sixes. His explosive start came right from the first over, launching his first six with a daring lap shot.
Though Tim Seifert contributed a brief cameo before being dismissed early, and Jake Fraser-McGurk had another disappointing outing, Allen dominated from one end. Sanjay Krishnamurthi added to the excitement by hitting four sixes in an over off Rachin Ravindra — a feat Ravindra himself replicated during the chase.
Allen struck three consecutive sixes off both Mitchell Owen and fellow Kiwi Glenn Phillips, reaching 86 off just 28 balls. His century, which came off only 34 deliveries, set a new MLC record, surpassing Nicholas Pooran's 40-ball ton. With seven overs still remaining, Allen continued to accumulate runs, and when he hit his 18th six, the Unicorns had already posted the highest total in MLC history.
He reached 150 off just 49 balls, again setting new T20 cricket records. Gayle's record for the highest individual score in T20s was in jeopardy, but Allen's remarkable innings ended when he miscued a shot to long-on. Hassan Khan then added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 38, taking the Unicorns to a colossal 270.
Washington Freedom showed early promise in the chase as Mitchell Owen and Rachin Ravindra hammered 79 runs in the first five overs, hinting at an improbable victory. However, their momentum faltered after Fraser-McGurk took a brilliant catch and a mix-up in the next over led to both openers falling in quick succession.
From a strong 80/0, Freedom crumbled to 117/8, with the innings unraveling rapidly. Haris Rauf turned the game decisively, trapping Glenn Maxwell lbw and bowling Phillips in the same over. Hassan Khan and Carmie le Roux contributed as wickets continued to fall in clusters, with Freedom losing two wickets per over at one point. Rauf sealed the outcome with his third wicket, wrapping up the innings with 41 balls to spare, giving the Unicorns a dominant start to their campaign.
Brief scores: San Francisco Unicorns 269/5 in 20 overs (Finn Allen 151, Hassan Khan 38 (not out); Jack Edwards 2-39) beat Washington Freedom 146/10 in 13.1 overs (Rachin Ravindra 42, Mitchell Owen 39; Haris Rauf 3-30) by 123 runs.

How Agni Dev Chopra is playing for MI New York in MLC 2025 despite BCCI's no foreign leagues policy? Explained
Agni Dev Chopra's Major League Cricket (MLC) debut for MI New York on Saturday didn't go well as the opener was dismissed for just five runs against Texas Super Kings at the Oakland Coliseum in California. The left-hander was caught by Saiteja Mukkamalla off Adam Milne. But the biggest question is how Chopra, who played domestic cricket in India in January 2025, is allowed to play in a foreign franchise T20 league when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn't permit one to do so? According to BCCI rules, active Indian male cricketers aren't allowed to play in foreign T20 leagues. Even U-19 World Cup-winning former India captain Unmukt Chand had to retire from Indian cricket to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, Big Bash League and MLC. In fact, the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan and Yusuf Pathan were given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in t20 league outside India post their retirement from BCCI domestic and international cricket. The answer to this question is Chopra is not an Indian passport holder despite being Indian. Although his parents live in Mumbai, Chopra holds a USA citizenship due to his birth in Detroit. Chopra's decision to chase his American dream came after BCCI recently amended their policy which stated that players with Indian passport would only be allowed to compete in the domestic tournaments. Earlier, the BCCI allowed players to play in domestic tournaments even if he had a PIO/ OCI (Person of Indian Origin/ Original Country India) card. Notably, Agni Dev's parents are Indian citizenship holders. Born to renowned Bollywood film director Vidhu Vinod Chopra and film critic Anupama Chopra, Agni Dev first played for Mumbai in age-level tournaments before bursting onto the scene for Mizoram.

Faf du Plessis defies age at 40 to take superman-like catch during MI New York vs Texas Super Kings in MLC 2025
Faf du Plessis defied age at 40 to take a superman-like one-handed catch to dismiss MI New York's Michael Bracewell in the second match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 at the Oakland Coliseum in California on Saturday. Led by Du Plessis, Texas Super Kings were playing their first match of the MLC 2025. The incident took place in the 14th over of the MI New York innings, bowled by Adam Milne. Reacting to a slower back of the length delivery, Bracewell played a flat-batted shot with a decent power. Although it looked that the ball wouldn't be off Du Plessis reach, but the veteran of the sport leaped to his right like a bird to snap the ball. Earlier, batting first, Texas Super Kings rode on Devon Conway's 65 and Calvin Savage's 53 not out to steer the team to a competitive 185/6. While Conway stood tall at one end, Texas Super Kings kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. It was until Conway and Savage put together a 79-run stand for the sixth wicket to take the total past 180. In reply, MI New York had the worst possible start with openers Agni Chopra and Quinton de Kock back in the hut with single digits. Monank Patel (62), Bracewell (38) and Kieron Pollard (32) tried their best but it wasn't enough as the New York-based franchise fell short by three runs.

Trent Boult's bizarre run-out in MLC goes viral, Stuart Broad can't stop watching
A couple of run-outs in the second match of the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season between MI New York and Texas Super Kings in California had the feel of a village cricket game somewhere in Europe. The ball deflected off his pads into a vacant area inside the 30-yard circle on the leg-side. He set off for a single, strolling casually towards the non-striker's end. Daryl Mitchell fielded the ball off his own bowling and produced a direct hit at the non-striker's stumps. Only halfway through the run did Pollard realise Mitchell was on to the ball quickly.
