O'Reilly scores in OT, Knights tip Wildcats 3-2 in Memorial Cup opener for both teams
RIMOUSKI - Sam O'Reilly's second goal of the game, scored at 4:23 of 3-on-3 overtime, lifted the London Knights to an exciting 3-2 victory over the Moncton Wildcats in the opening game for both teams at the 2025 Memorial Cup championship.
Kasper Halttunen, with a second-period power-play goal, also scored for the Ontario Hockey League champion Knights, who outshot the Wildcats 48-29.
Etienne Morin and Dyllan Gill, on the power play, scored for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League champion Wildcats, while Alex Mercier pitched in with two assists.
Wildcats netminder Mathis Rousseau stopped 45 of 48 shots, while Austin Elliott of the Knights made 27 saves on 29 shots.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 heading into the third. Both squads went 1-for-3 on the power play.
ICE CHIPS
The 10-day tournament opened Friday with the Western Hockey League champion Medicine Hat Tigers edging the host Rimouski Oceanic 5-4. The host Saginaw Spirit won the Memorial Cup last year with a 4-3 win over the London Knights in the championship final.

Game 3 is Sunday. The Wildcats trailed 8-6 in the seventh inning but rallied with four runs. With two on and one out, Brendan Summerhill doubled down the left field line to score one run while Easton Breyfogle advanced to third. Breyfogle then scored on a wild pitch by Walter McDuffie to tie the score. After a couple of walks loaded the bases, Mihalakis drove in two with a single to right field off of Folger Boaz. Tony Pluta (3-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. McDuffie (3-2) took the loss. The Tar Heels trailed 6-4 in the top of the seventh before scoring four runs to take the lead. Tyson Bass hit a three-run home run and Jackson Van De Brake drew a bases-loaded walk. Tommy Splaine hit a two-run home run for Arizona. North Carolina (46-14) is playing in a super regional for the 12th time, having advanced eight times previously. It is Arizona's sixth super regional and the Wildcats (43-19) have won four of their previous five.

(Photo: Eric Hartline, Imagn Images) Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere has seen and done it all during his brief time in charge of his former team, and his first piece of business is looking like his best so far. On June 6, 2023, two years ago yesterday, Briere made his first trade as the general manager of the Flyers, sending Ivan Provorov and Hayden Hodgson to the Los Angeles Kings (and then the Columbus Blue Jackets) in exchange for what would become Oliver Bonk, Helge Grans, the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Cal Petersen, and Carson Bjarnason. Advertisement Petersen's albatross contract has, of course, expired, leaving the Flyers with just the good stuff: a great goalie prospect in Bjarnason, an NHL-caliber defenseman with an elite toolkit in Grans, a promising potential top-four defender in Bonk, and a first-round pick that became much higher than expected as the fruits of the Sean Walker trade. In the last two years, Briere has swung his fair share of deals, like the Cutter Gauthier one that yielded Jamie Drysdale, and the other that offloaded Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost for diminishing returns. Bringing in Grans, Walker, and other draft picks has proven to be one of Briere's best moves so far, if not the very best.
