PM Shehbaz condemns terrorist attack in Balochistan, pays tribute to martyred ADC
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday strongly condemned the cowardly terrorist attack in Suarab, Balochistan, which targeted a bank, innocent civilians, and administrative officials. In a statement issued by the PM Office, the prime minister paid rich tribute to Additional Deputy Commissioner Hidayatullah Baloch, who embraced martyrdom while defending his area against the terrorists. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for their strength and patience in this time of grief. 'The cowardly terrorists deliberately targeted unarmed civilians, including women and children,' the prime minister said, adding that the attack reflected the anti-people mindset of elements who oppose peace and development in Balochistan. Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government's commitment to continue the war against terrorism until the complete elimination of such elements from the country. He lauded the bravery of the martyred ADC, calling his sacrifice a 'shining example of courage and valour.' 'The entire nation stands in solidarity with the family of Shaheed Hidayatullah Baloch,' the Prime Minister added. He said the armed forces of Pakistan were working round the clock to counter proxy networks involved in terrorism under Indian patronage. 'The nation stands shoulder to shoulder with its armed forces in eradicating terrorism and its facilitators,' he remarked. The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the attack. Earlier, Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti also condemned the attack, praising the martyred ADC's bravery and the commitment to serve the country. He said despite being in the position of ADC Revenue, Buledi valiantly led his life while fighting against the 'Indian-sponsored terrorists', who he'd opened fired on innocent civilians in the market. As per reports, dozens of BLA terrorists launched a coordinated attack in Sorab and torched multiple government offices and a local police station, while setting up check points on the Quetta-Karachi highway, earlier in the day. WWF-Pakistan opposes snow leopards' transfer to Moscow
LAHORE: The proposed move to transfer the snow leopards from Gilgit-Baltistan to Moscow not only contradicts national and international conservation commitments but also risks setting a highly detrimental precedent for future transfer of threatened and iconic wildlife species from Pakistan. WWF-Pakistan stated this in a letter to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), Government of Pakistan, on the proposed transfer of two snow leopards, currently housed at the Naltar Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, to the Moscow Zoo, Russia. WWF-Pakistan expressed its deepest concern and opposition to the move and demanded that the proposed export of snow leopards be immediately cancelled. The organization also called for reaffirmation of Pakistan's commitment to the conservation of its iconic wildlife species and emphasized upholding the obligations under international agreements. According to WWF-Pakistan, the snow leopard (Panthera uncia), listed as a threatened (Vulnerable) species on the IUCN Red List (2017), receives the highest level of legal protection under Pakistan's national and provincial wildlife legislation, including that of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the species is included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which strictly prohibits international trade except under exceptional, non-commercial circumstances. It further said there is no compelling conservation rationale for transferring these snow leopards to Russia, a country that already hosts a significantly larger wild population of the species. WWF-Pakistan recommended that instead of exporting the country's unique natural heritage, Pakistan should demonstrate global leadership by reinforcing its commitment to conservation and the protection of its remaining wild snow leopard populations. The organization also highlighted the risk that once the snow leopards are transferred, it would be difficult to monitor or ensure the well-being of these animals under Russian jurisdiction. Remarking on the proposed move, Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General WWF-Pakistan, said that approval of this export would undermine decades of conservation progress and significantly damage Pakistan's standing in the global conservation community. This moment calls for reaffirming our stewardship of national biodiversity and strengthening the institutions responsible for its protection, rather than yielding to external pressures that compromise our long-term conservation goals. 'We need to uphold Pakistan's obligations under international agreements such as CITES and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) by prioritizing the protection of vulnerable and critically endangered species within national borders', Khan added. WWF-Pakistan strongly recommended steps to strengthen the Naltar Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre to function as a dedicated facility for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and veterinary care, equipped to manage future confiscations and care cases. It also asked for enhancing the capacity of the Gilgit-Baltistan Parks and Wildlife Department through targeted technical training, adequate financial support, and provision of essential operational equipment. The organization reiterated that Pakistan must set an example for other nations in ensuring the protection of the country's invaluable wildlife heritage. In the letter, WWF-Pakistan also expressed its commitment to supporting the Ministry in designing and implementing measures that advance wildlife conservation across Pakistan. Govt unveils major tariff reforms
Listen to article PM Shehbaz Sharif on Friday unveiled major tariff reforms, announcing that customs duty would be capped at a maximum of 15% and that additional customs and regulatory duties would be phased out in the next four to five years. The prime minister, who chaired a meeting on National Tariff Policy, took the step by approving a gradual but significant reduction in import tariffs. "The move is being considered a major milestone towards economic improvement that will enable export-led growth. This decision is expected not only to help control unemployment but also to keep inflation in check. Besides, it will also encourage international investment, help create new job opportunities," according to a PM Office press release. He directed that Additional Customs Duty (currently ranging from 2% to 7%) and Regulatory Duty (currently varying from 5% to 90%) be eliminated over the next four to five years. Similarly, the Customs Duty will be capped at a maximum of 15% as currently, for some items, the rate exceeds even 100%. The number of duty slabs has also been reduced to four to ease legal complexities related to imports and provide a level playing field to various industries. Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated that his government was committed to developing a strong economy, creating employment opportunities, and doing away with inflation. He said that after thorough consultations with national and international economic experts, a comprehensive plan for fundamental economic reforms had been formulated, and the decision to reduce customs duties was also part of those reforms. The prime minister's "historic decision" will open the economy to foreign investment and ensure that domestic industries have easy and affordable access to raw materials, intermediate goods, and capital equipment. Moreover, increased competitiveness will enable local industries to become more efficient and competitive, to assist in controlling inflation and stabilizing the national currency. The prime minister viewed that tariff reduction would help stabilize the current account deficit and contribute to higher revenue collection, and also formed an implementation committee on the subject. The meeting was attended by federal minister Jam Kamal Khan, Ahad Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Ali Pervaiz Malik, Special Assistant to PM Haroon Akhtar, and senior officials of relevant departments.
