Meath gears up for Fleadh na Mí opening this weekend
Hosted by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the festival celebrates Irish music and culture through offering a diverse range of events for all locals and visitors to enjoy.
The Fleadh will commence this Friday, May, 9 at 7pm with the official opening ceremony featuring music, song, and dance.
To kick off the main weekend of event, on Friday, May, 16, there will be a traditional singing concert with special guests at the Darnley Lodge Hotel.
Saturday will see a street session led by well-known fiddle player Anóin Mac Gabhain, with Fleadh Aifreann/Mass to follow in Saint James' Church.
An official opening ceremony with special guests Caitlín and Bernadette Nic Gabhainn will take place in the evening followed by a music session an refreshments.
Competitions will run on Sunday morning to conclude the event led by O'Growney National School. Competitors including musicians, singers, and dancers from Comhaltas branches across Meath will take part.
Anna Nic Giolla Séanáin and Cathal Mac Potair won a competition held by Comhaltas na Mí to feature their artwork in this year's Fleadh na Mí 2025 programme cover.
Organisers have worked closely with local businesses and volunteers to ensure an environment for the seasoned trad players or fans of Irish culture.
With the weather forecast to be favourable so far this weekend, a large crowd may be expected for the opening ceremony.

Top Irish cast to join Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan for darkly-comic crime drama, Tall Tales & Murder
A CAST of top Irish talent has been lined up for a new darkly-comic crime drama, which is being adapted for the small screen by Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan. Tall Tales & Murder is based on Irish writer Caimh McDonnell's Dublin Trilogy, whch, despite its name, is a series of eight books that follows the exploits of former garda Bunny McGarry. British comedian Chris Addison has co-created the show with Carolan, while the series will star Love/Hate alumnus Aidan Gillen. Also among the cast are Irish stars Ella Lily Hyland (Towards Zero), Philippa Dunne (Derry Girls) and Packy Lee (Peaky Blinders). Two six-part series have been commissioned by RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland, in association with Screen Ireland, while the show is produced by Avalon. 'Dark and delicious' Carolan expressed his delight at working with Addison on the series, which began filming in Ireland this week and is set to premiere in 2026. "I've been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It — it's been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life," he said. Addison will serve as director and producer on the series. As well as starring in The Thick of It, the comedian and writer will also be familiar to fans of TV panel show, Mock the Week, where he was a regular guest. "I'm frankly giddy with delight to get to team up with the twisted and highly-original mind of Stuart Carolan to create this show," he said. "We've taken Caimh's wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama." Shining a light on modern Ireland Eddie Doyle, Head of Content Commissioning at BBC Northern Ireland, described Carolan and Addison as 'masters of their craft'. "Tall Tales & Murder is storytelling at its darkest, funniest and most surreal," he said. "We're looking forward to bringing audiences with us on this wild and thrilling ride from Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison, masters of their craft. "There's a fantastic cast already on board and we can't wait to work with Avalon, in association with Metropolitan Pictures, and RTÉ to take it from script to screen." RTE star set to go into harrowing detail about breakdown of marriage in new book
RTE star Miriam O'Callaghan is set to go into the harrowing detail of the breakdown in her first marriage in her first memoir. And the Prime Time host has also ruled out '100 per cent' that she will not run for the Irish Presidency. The mum-of-eight revealed on Friday she will debut her first memoir in October after taking 20 years to write it. Speaking to the Sunday Independent, Miriam said: 'I am 100 percent ruling out running for the presidency." On considering putting her name forward for nomination she said: "I address the whole subject in my book. That's all I'll say." In 1983 she married fellow broadcaster Tom McGurk and the couple had four daughters: Jessica, Georgia, Alannah and Clara. They split in 1995. Her second marriage was to Steve Carson. They married in 2000 and have four sons together - Conor, Jack, Daniel and Jamie. Asked if the book will cover the breakdown of her first marriage she said: "There's no part of my life or story that I do not address. 'I write about everything. And I think that is only fair to readers. Otherwise, they'll feel I'm just telling half a story. "I've lived my life in the public eye for a long time - and I always feel that if I ask people to open up to me in interviews, then why shouldn't I be open with others? "What is so precious and important about my life that I can keep it all hidden, when I expect others to tell me the truths about their lives? So there will be things in the book that people don't know about me." The book will also address the inside story of media storms and career disappointments, including rumours about being considered for the Late Late Show. "I explain the full story, which not everyone knows. I talk about the process around it and how it can end up a terrible mess. I've been inside a number of huge media storms down the years. 'And I explain the anatomy of those in the book, which is interesting." She also ruled out any desire to leave RTÉ, saying: "I'm obsessed with figures. I really care about how many people listen to me and watch me. And right now, loads of people listen and watch. "So long as that happens, I'll be there. I'll know the day people are really, really sick of me and I'll be gone. "But right now I love it - and, as Nigella Lawson says: 'It's important for younger women to see that you can be out there doing a good job as an older woman and doing it well."

An Irish travel content creator has left social media users in stitches after sharing a glimpse at the last minute letter he wrote as part of the application to renew his visa in Namibia, Africa. Jack Ring is a travel content creator who boasts more than 800,000 TikTok followers and 400,000 Instagram followers and he is currently based in Africa. Taking to social media over the weekend, Jack detailed how he was left 'embarrassed' following a trip to the Immigration Office in Namibia when he applied to extend his stay.
