Innocent mum's brutal murder linked to organised crime

Perth Now22-04-2025

A man's involvement with organised crime might have led to his innocent partner's kidnapping and murder and a savage assault on his eight-year-old child.
A group of up to five men broke into a 45-year-old woman's Sydney home and assaulted her and her youngest son before dragging her into an SUV.
The car was found later on Thursday burnt out at Beverly Hills, about 6km away, with a body thought to be the woman's discovered inside after the blaze was extinguished.
The eight-year-old, who was hit in the head with a baseball bat, remained in an induced coma on Tuesday under police guard.
Initially puzzled by the horrific attack, police on Tuesday said the likely motivation was the fact the woman's de facto husband and father to their children was involved in organised crime.
"It appears the male was in some form of conflict with members of that particular organised crime group," Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi said.
"We believe this organised crime group is based in Victoria, and is responsible for large-scale drug manufacture."
Victorian police raided a property in Springdallah, south of Ballarat, on Saturday in connection with their probe and found evidence of a drug lab.
No charges have been laid as a result of the raid.
The organised crime group consists mainly of Vietnamese men, although police cannot yet draw the direct link between the gang and the men who kidnapped the woman from her Bankstown home.
Det Supt Doueihi called the offences "callous, brutal and against innocent people".
"This woman and her children were in no means involved or had knowledge of what their partner or father was up to, yet they were targeted by this organised crime group," he said.
"These organised crime groups are breaking their own code of conduct by targeting innocent women and children."
The woman had no criminal record, while her male partner was known to police for minor drug offences.
Police said he was interstate on business at the time of the attack and was co-operating with the investigation. He has not been charged with any offence.
His son is expected to suffer lifelong complications from the attack.
The boy had emergency surgery for serious head injuries on Friday and medical staff hope to bring him out of the induced coma on Tuesday.
His 15-year-old brother was not physically assaulted, but suffered psychological injuries from what he witnessed, police said.
He also remains in hospital under police guard.
A post-mortem scheduled for Wednesday is expected to confirm detectives' strong belief the body found in the car is the 45-year-old woman.
The body was so badly burnt police have not been able to formally identify it.
NSW Police have not been able to contact relatives in Vietnam of the dead woman, with no other relatives known in Australia.

Mass shooter who opened fire at high school graduation party is just one of the migrants busted in LA ICE raids: ‘That's who they're protesting for'

Some of the illegal immigrants detained in the ICE-raids that sparked Los Angeles' riots are convicted criminals with rap sheets for sexual assault, gang activity and even murder — including a Vietnamese national convicted of carrying out a mass shooting at a high school graduation party that shocked Southern California. Cuong Chanh Phan, 49, was among dozens of illegal immigrants ICE arrested in LA over the weekend in a series of raids that prompted demonstrators to flock to the streets and demand their freedom. Phan is a killer, convicted of second-degree murder. After he was kicked out of an LA county high school graduation party in 1994, he returned with his gang member cronies and fired semiautomatic rifles into a crowd of 30 people, killing two teens and wounding seven others, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Another criminal arrested in the weekend raids is 55-year-old Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, from the Philippines, who was sentenced to 37 years in prison for assault with intent to commit rape, and sexual penetration with a foreign object in Pomona, California. Despite the reality of many of the arrested illegal immigrants' crimes, protestors attempted to block ICE officers from carrying out the raids over the weekend, and surrounded a downtown LA detention center where they thought the detainees were being held. President Trump eventually deployed the National Guard to try to quell the protests. Those alarming rap sheets — and more like them — have left many within the DHS and ICE shaking their heads at what they characterized as blindly misguided motives from protestors. 'That's who they're protesting for — the actual criminals that are being arrested, the sex offenders, the terrorists, all that,' an ICE source told The Post. 'You have criminals, gang members, terrorists, child molesters, sex offenders that are being arrested, but since people don't know the background of the case or what's going on, everybody's innocent,' the source added. 'It's disappointing to see that ICE was enforcing the immigration law and actually arresting criminals, but the public sees it as everybody's innocent, which is not true.' The list of violent offenders arrested in the raids goes on. Among them is Armando Ordaz, a 44-year-old Mexican national who is allegedly a member of the Bratz 13 gang and has a Los Angeles conviction for sexual battery. Delfino Aguilar-Martinez, 51, is a Mexican national with a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury. He was arrested Friday. And 55-year-old Lionel Sanchez-Laguna, a Mexican national, was also arrested over the weekend. He has convictions for firing a weapon at an inhabited dwelling, battery of a spouse or cohabitant, and willful cruelty to a child. He also has a DUI to his name, along with assault with a firearm. Victor Mendoza-Aguilar, 32, was also arrested Friday. The Mexican national has California convictions for possession of controlled substances and paraphernalia, along with assault with a deadly weapon. Other illegal immigrants arrested in the weekend raids have convictions for drug dealing, robbery, grand larceny and transporting illegal aliens. California leaders like Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass have blamed Trump for inciting the riots, saying his deployment of the National Guard without the state's permission or request created chaos. But the DHS thinks California's leadership has the story backward — and cited Phan's criminal history as the perfect example. 'This criminal illegal alien is who Newsom and Bass and the rioters in Los Angeles are trying to protect over US citizens,' a DHS spokesperson said. Horror morning on Australian roads as three people including two teenagers killed in separate crashes in Queensland, Victoria

Three people including two teenagers have been killed in separate crashes in Queensland and Victoria in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A 15-year-old boy and 18-year-old man both died after a crash at Orbost in Victoria's East Gippsland region about 12.20am. Emergency services were called to the scene after reports a car had crashed into a tree near the corner of Murphys Lane and Bonang-Orbost Road. Police confirmed the 18-year-old male driver and his 15-year-old male passenger died at the scene. Another passenger, whose age is not known, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage that could help police in their investigations is urged to contact Crime Stoppers. The number of lives lost on Victorian roads in 2025 has climbed to 136, surpassing the road toll at the same time last year at 123, according to police figures. A 77-year-old woman has also died after a separate crash in Morayfield, north of Brisbane, about 12.20am on Tuesday. Initial investigations indicate a grey Honda Civic was travelling along Morayfield Road near Walkers Road when it lost control and struck a tree. The 25-year-old male driver was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious but stable condition, while his 77-year-old female passenger died at the scene. Police confirmed the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident. The number of fatalities on Queensland roads has reached 122 so far in 2025, police data shows. Anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage has been asked to contact police.

Mushroom cook to face further questions in murder trial

Prosecutors are expected to continue their questioning of mushroom cook Erin Patterson as she returns for a sixth day in the witness box at her triple murder trial. The 50-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the deaths of her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, as well as the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson. She denies deliberately poisoning her lunch guests on July 29, 2023 by serving them death cap mushroom-laced beef Wellingtons. Patterson will continue giving evidence at her Supreme Court trial, after facing questions on Friday about her internet search history. Crown prosecutor Nanette Rogers SC had presented Patterson with screenshots found on a personal computer seized from her home, which she allegedly accessed in May 2022. The prosecution alleged that one search history led to a page about death cap mushrooms on iNaturalist, a website where users share biodiversity information to learn more about nature. "I suggest you used Bing search to look up iNaturalist," Dr Rogers said. "It does look like somebody did that, yes," Patterson responded. "I suggest that person was you," the prosecutor said. "I don't remember doing that. It's possible," she responded. Before the trial broke for the weekend, Dr Rogers referred to the screenshots to suggest to Patterson she "had an interest" in death cap mushrooms in May 2022. "It depends what you mean by an interest," Patterson responded. The mushroom cook was also questioned about her relationship with her in-laws on Friday. Patterson denied having "two faces" when it comes to her relationship with her former in-laws, who died after eating the toxic beef lunch she cooked them. The Supreme Court trial in the regional Victorian town of Morwell has entered its seventh week, drawing curious spectators who queue before dawn to see her give evidence.
