18-year-old was trying to ‘show off' before crash that killed friend, MN cops say
An 18-year-old told police he was celebrating his high school graduation when he crashed his car, killing his friend, Minnesota authorities said.
Izak Schermerhorn was driving recklessly on May 27 before his car flipped into a ditch and fatally pinned Blake Unger, according to a probable cause statement filed in Otter Tail County.
Deputies responded to the crash in Bluffton Township at about 10:45 p.m., and Unger was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement read.
A deputy noticed 'deep ruts in the road where it appeared the driver had been aggressively fishtailing back and forth along the gravel road before rolling,' according to the statement.
The driver, Schermerhorn, had a 'noticeable odor of alcohol' on him, the deputy said.
He told the deputy he had 'three or four' Mike's Hard Lemonades that night and said 'his life was over and all for a couple of drinks,' the statement said. He failed a sobriety test, authorities said.
Schermerhorn said he picked up Unger earlier just to drive around a little, because 'he wanted to show off the sound of his exhaust because he modified his catalytic converter,' according to the deputy. 'He intentionally had been sliding around the road before the crash and was not able to control the vehicle when it went into the ditch.'
'He further stated that he had abstained for almost a year prior due to issues with alcohol but decided to celebrate because he was graduating from high school,' the deputy said.
Schermerhorn is facing three counts of vehicular homicide, records show.
Unger and Schermerhorn both attended New York Mills High School and had recently graduated, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.
Unger was an avid athlete, competing in wrestling, baseball and football, the outlet reported. He was also homecoming king during the fall semester.

I CAN'T IMAGINE this being magnified by infinity as it is for Blake's entire family,' Dinee Dykhoff, a New York Mills teacher, said in a Facebook post. 'Blake was so kind to everyone... big smile (matched his heart and his personality)... so strong... humble... exceptional athlete.'
Bluffton Township is a roughly 160-mile drive northwest from Minneapolis.

The segment then turned to Marquardt, who described the situation of a man located in the US whose family remained in Afghanistan and said that he found people on Facebook charging $10,000 per person to be evacuated. Marquardt stated, 'according to Afghans and activists we've spoken with, desperate Afghans are now being exploited' because of the 'exorbitant' and 'impossible' amounts charged, pointing to a LinkedIn post from Young advertising his services and texts between him and people inquiring about his business. CNN stood by Marquardt after the verdict. 'We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case,' the network said at the time. Motorists in Philippine capital targeted by imposter website
"Check your plate or licence if you have a violation, just click the link," reads a Tagalog-language Facebook post shared on May 26, 2025. The link takes users to a website that will bring up any traffic violations associated with their driving licence or vehicle registration. A screenshot of the website is attached to the post. It bears the logo of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) -- the government agency managing traffic in the Philippine capital -- and includes the text "No Contact Apprehension Program". The post circulated on the same day the MMDA resumed its "no contact apprehension policy" along major thoroughfares in the capital after the Supreme Court halted it in 2022 (archived here and here). Under the policy, drivers caught committing a traffic violation on camera will be sent proof of the infringement through the mail and be required to pay a fine (archived link). They may also file an appeal online or at the MMDA office. Similar posts were shared elsewhere on Facebook, with some users including screenshots claiming the website showed they had "no violations recorded". The link included in the circulating posts, however, does not direct users to a genuine MMDA website. The URL of the imposter website has been formulated to make it appear as if it were a genuine MMDA page (archived link). The imposter website also erroneously refers to the MMDA scheme as a "program" rather than a "policy" (archived link). The MMDA denied any affiliation with the circulating link in a May 26 post on its verified X account (archived link). "Avoid posting and sharing this link to avoid causing confusion. Avoid using the website and do not type your license plate here," the statement read. The agency added that the official website regarding the NCAP is "currently being prepared" and advised motorists to directly reach out to check their record. Archer County Sheriff's Office seeks suspect in alleged morning robbery
ARCHER COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — The Archer County Sheriff's Office is searching for a suspect in an alleged early morning robbery. According to a Facebook post made by the ACSO, they are asking the public to Be On the Look Out (BOLO) for a black male last seen wearing a white shirt and jeans in the FM 368 and Highway 25 area. The suspect could be headed toward Holliday. He is a suspect in an early morning robbery, but is believed to be unarmed. Do not approach.
