Pakistan, Taliban condemn US strikes on Iran

NHK5 hours ago

Pakistan and the Taliban have condemned US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.
On Sunday, thousands of protesters marched in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, and in the capital, Islamabad, denouncing the US airstrikes and what they called Israeli aggression in the Middle East.
Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement on the same day that there is an "imperative need to respect civilian lives and immediately bring the conflict to end."
It marked a shift in tone from Islamabad, which just a day earlier said it would nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for helping end a four-day conflict between Pakistan and India.
Afghanistan's Taliban interim government also condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

IAEA: Iran's Fordow enrichment site probably severely damaged by US strike

The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog has said that "very significant damage is expected to have occurred" at Iran's Fordow uranium enrichment plant in a US strike, "given the explosive payload utilized." IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi was speaking at a meeting of its board of governors on Monday, which was convened in response to attacks by the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities. He presented the view, while adding that no one, including his organization, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at the plant. Grossi noted that Iran has informed the IAEA that there was no increase in off-site radiation levels at three nuclear sites struck by US forces. Grossi stressed that what is important is the 400 kilograms of uranium that Iran enriched to 60 percent. He called for a cessation of hostilities to allow IAEA inspectors to "go back to Iranian nuclear sites and account for the stockpiles of uranium." Grossi also revealed that he received a letter from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on June 13, telling him that Iran will "adopt special measures to protect our nuclear equipment and materials." Grossi said he told Araghchi that any transfer of nuclear material from a safeguarded facility to another location in Iran must be declared to the IAEA.

Japan PM Ishiba holds news conference as Diet session ends

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has said he will make every effort to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with the US on tariff negotiations. Ishiba said at a news conference on Monday at the end of the Diet session that his government would not hesitate to take additional measures to support domestic industries if necessary. Ishiba said: "We must not rush into an agreement that could harm our national interests. I will put my heart and soul into these negotiations and carry the weight of the nation on my back." Ishiba touched on rising tensions in the Middle East. He was asked about the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Ishiba said: "Our country relies on the Middle East for 80 percent of our oil, so the situation will have a significant impact on the stability of our energy supply. We will continue to monitor the situation with vigilance. The most important thing is for tensions to be calmed as soon as possible. Japan strongly urges the path to dialogue be reopened." Ishiba said Japan will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its citizens in the region. The prime minister also announced measures against rising prices. He said the government will give out vouchers worth about 140 dollars to each person. Those with lower incomes and families with children will get extra benefits. Ishiba commented on a cut to the consumption tax, which opposition parties are calling for. He said: "It will take time to enact. This would also give preferential treatment to high income earners. Furthermore, it would also threaten funding for social security measures. So I don't think it's entirely appropriate." Ishiba expressed his aim to get a majority for his ruling coalition in the coming Upper House election, expected to be held next month. He said he hopes to achieve that by winning seats and adding them to those not up for election.

North Korea condemns US attacks on nuclear sites in Iran

North Korea's foreign ministry has castigated the United States for its recent military strikes on nuclear sites in Iran. A foreign ministry spokesperson denounced the attack through state-run media on Monday, saying it "violently trampled down the territorial integrity and security interests of a sovereign state." The spokesperson also called on the international community to "raise the voice of unanimous censure and rejection" against US and Israeli acts in the Middle East. The official said those acts are amplifying serious concerns by further aggravating the tension in the region and causing serious negative consequences to the global security structure through the use of physical strength under the pretext of "peacekeeping" and "threat removal." North Korea and Iran have maintained friendly ties and share an anti-US stance.
