RTMC team deployed to probe deadly Eastern Cape crash

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has deployed a team of investigators to probe the cause of an accident that claimed the lives of 15 people in the Eastern Cape.
It is understood a minibus and a taxi collided head-on on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) at about midnight on Saturday.
Accident
Minister of transport Barbara Creecy and the deputy minister of transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the fatal road crash.
A white Toyota Quantum minibus and an Isuzu double-cab collided head-on. Thirteen people from the Quantum, including the driver and the driver of the double cab, died at the scene. Six Quantum passengers were rushed to Provincial Hospital, and sadly, two succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total to 15.

'Saddened'
Creecy's spokesperson Collen Msibi said both the minister and her deputy are 'deeply saddened' by the deaths of passengers.
'They are deeply saddened about the turn of events amid a successful Easter road safety campaign and have also expressed their wish for a speedy recovery to those who were hospitalized.
'This tragic loss of lives underscores the importance of road safety as an individual responsibility. The Department, through RTMC, is investigating the cause of the accident in collaboration with the Saps and provincial authorities. A preliminary report is expected in 48 hours,' Msibi said.
Road inspection
Meanwhile, the EFF also extended its condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision.
The EFF calls upon the Department of Transport and all relevant authorities to ensure that all roads, especially those in rural and high-traffic areas, are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent such tragedies; to increase the presence of traffic officers to monitor and enforce road safety regulations effectively.'

Easter safety campaign
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) President, Abnar Tsebe, said they are also saddened by the loss of lives.
'This is a heartbreaking loss for the affected families and the country at large,' said Tsebe. 'It is especially devastating as it follows shortly after a successful Easter road safety campaign during which no major crashes were recorded on the national roads.
'This tragic incident is a reminder of the importance of sustained road safety awareness, visibility of law enforcement, and daily reinforcement of responsible driving behaviour'.
Santaco extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the crash and wished a full and speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Image: GCIS Amid talks over the past 10 years about the government obtaining a new licence card machine, the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) said it is concerned over the millions of rands spent on maintaining the one and only printer after several breakdowns. This was after Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, said the machine had been out of service for 38 days since April 1, resulting in a backlog of 733 000 licence cards. Creecy disclosed this in response to a written parliamentary question from Rise Mzansi leader, Songezo Zibi. Creecy said the machine was broken for 17 days in 2024/25, 48 days in 2023/24, and 26 days in the 2022/23 financial year. The department paid R9 267 862 for the repair and maintenance in 2022/23, R1 651 772 in 2023/24, R544 747 in 2024/25, and R624 988 so far. The department also had to fork out R4.4 million for overtime payments between the 2022/23 and 2024/25 financial years. Creecy said she has directed that a declaratory order be sought from a competent court on the tender to acquire a new machine, in order to ensure that no further irregular expenditure occurs. Image: SUPPLIED Outa's chief executive officer, Wayne Duvenage, said the organisation was concerned by the length of time it takes for the department to get the court to nullify the contract - riddled with irregularities and potential corruption. 'Why does it take so long to get this process done?' he asked. 'Lots of money spent on maintaining and overtime costs to catch up with backlogs. This is very concerning. The government has been talking about a new driving licence card machine for about 10 years now, with multiple tenders awarded and cancelled for the past 5 years and still, we are nowhere near resolving this issue. Incompetence and political interference at its best,' Duvenage said. Department of Transport spokesperson, Collen Msibi did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.

EFF, MKP demand accountability from Shamila Batohi over NPA sabotage claims

Image: Henk Kruger National prosecutions boss Shamila Batohi is facing renewed criticism from several parties, including the EFF, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party and ActionSA, over her recent statements about sabotage within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Last week Batohi, responding to intense criticism over several embarrassing defeats in high-profile cases said there had been "infiltration" of the prosecution service but later backtracked, saying she had use the wrong term and instead that certain cases were being deliberately sabotaged. Despite the backtracking by Batohi, the parties remain unconvinced and are demanding accountability, saying if there is sabotage then this happened under her watch and she should take responsibility by stepping down. The MK Party, on Monday, expressed concern over Batohi's statements, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability within the NPA. 'We are the first ones to call for her (Batohi) head. It's been three weeks since we made that call. She has shown that she is incompetent and therefore must go,' MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said. Video Player is loading. There is concern after the NPA was dealt a major blow in the case against former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule when the court ruled that the extradition from the US of his former PA, Moroadi Colota, was invalid. The NPA has also been slammed for bungling the case against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, who was acquitted on more than 30 charges of sexual assault. The NPA's failure to secure the extradition of the Gupta brothers, nearly a decade after the Gupta Leaks scandal, has also raised questions about the authority's effectiveness. The EFF said Batohi's remarks suggest undue influence is being exerted on the NPA, compromising its ability to secure justice and accountability. "This is not a casual institutional complaint. It is a constitutional red flag of the highest order," the EFF said. "An assertion from the NDPP herself that the NPA has been infiltrated should send shockwaves throughout every organ of state," the letter read. ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip called for Batohi's immediate removal, citing the NPA's repeated failures in high-profile cases. "The NPA has become a refuge for politically connected individuals, a place where accountability is avoided, justice is delayed, and prosecutions collapse with shocking regularity. "Under Batohi's leadership, the NPA reels from one scandal to the next. South Africans are left wondering if these failures are merely a result of incompetence, or is there a deliberate agenda to protect the corrupt,' Trollip said. NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga did not answer questions sent Monday. Batohi had said that if she felt she was underperforming, then she would step down immediately. However, the parties are not satisfied with her explanation and are demanding that she take responsibility. The DA has expressed concerns about the NPA's failures but has stopped short of calling for Batohi's removal. Instead, the party wants Batohi to explain the failures. The DA last week announced a reform package aimed at rescuing the NPA and restoring justice for victims of corruption. According to the DA, the NPA is currently "broken" and has failed to secure successful prosecutions in high-profile corruption cases. To address these issues, the DA's Spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development, Glynnis Breytenbach, proposes a series of reforms.

Batohi could appear in parliament to explain allegations of corruption inside the NPA
Batohi's statements have ignited some curiosity on the challenges of the NPA. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wants the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi to appear before parliament next week to give more details about allegations of rogue elements inside the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). During an interview this week with a local broadcaster, Batohi said she was concerned that the NPA had been infiltrated by individuals who do not have the best interests of the rule of law at heart. She also said there were systematic challenges, but also internal and external agendas that affect the function of the NPA. The state lawyers have been under attack from both the public and political parties for mishandling major cases, especially those involving high-profile figures and politicians. In a letter to the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, the EFF stated that the NDPP must furnish Parliament with information on rogue activities at the NPA, if indeed they exist. 'We therefore respectfully request that the Portfolio Committee convene an urgent meeting on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, for the express purpose of engaging Advocate Shamila Batohi on her public statements and allowing Members of Parliament to exercise their oversight responsibilities. In the spirit of transparency and full accountability. 'Advocate Batohi must explain what she meant by infiltration, what forms of manipulation she is facing, what forces—internal or external—are hindering her work, and what corrective or protective steps have been taken,' the party said. The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development should take responsibility for the NPA The party said it also wanted the Minister of Justice to be present at this meeting. 'The attendance of the Minister is essential, not only because section 179(6) of the Constitution requires that the Cabinet member responsible for the administration of justice exercise final responsibility over the NPA, but also because the potential political implications of the NDPP's statement need to be evaluated in the context of executive accountability. 'The Minister must brief the Committee on what measures are in place to safeguard the NPA from infiltration, how vetting is conducted for senior appointments, and whether any recent developments have prompted internal investigations or interdepartmental correspondence regarding institutional integrity.' The EFF said a weakened NPA isa poor reflection on the state. 'The NPA stands at the frontline of holding the corrupt accountable and ensuring justice for victims of serious crimes, including femicide, sexual violence, and complex financial crimes. Meanwhile, Batohi had said she would meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa to express her concerns about the challenges the NPA faces. 'This is something that I am going to take up with the executive we need to understand exactly what is going on and why it is sometimes so difficult to do this job. 'Because you have all the challenges of the system, but you also have agendas externally and internally, this is a serious concern for me,' she said.
