The Insane True Story Behind ‘A Widow's Game'—Where Is The Real Maje Now?

Netflix's latest crime thriller A Widow's Game has climbed to the No. 1 spot on the platform after its May 30 release. Viewers may be surprised to learn that the movie is inspired by one of the most shocking true crimes in Spain's history. Read on to learn more about the real-life case involving manipulation, infidelity and murder.
From director Carlos Sedes (The Asunta Case), the film takes place in August 2017, when a dead body is discovered in a parking lot in Valencia, Spain, with several stab wounds. The victim is Arturo Ferrer Puig, a newlywed who had been married to a young woman named Maje for less than a year. Skilled homicide detective Eva is assigned to the case and soon realizes that Maje's story has holes – and all signs point to a crime of passion.
'Why does a person consider that it is better to commit a murder than to get divorced? This was the question that assailed me when I first read the news about Maje and Salvador's crime," executive producer Ramón Campos said in a statement to Netflix.
'Over the years we have been trying to unravel the answer and we think we have understood, but not understood, why Maje decided to manipulate Salvador to murder a person who was undoubtedly a good person. Because this film is not about the victim. It is about the murderers. Because sometimes the answer to our actions lies not in who we are, but where we come from,' he continued.

Yes, Netflix's film A Widow's Game is based on a real-life true crime case from Valencia, Spain, known as La Viuda Negra de Patraix, which translates to 'The Black Widow of Patraix' in English. The character of Maje is based on María Jesús Moreno, while her late husband, Arturo, was inspired by 35-year-old Antonio Navarro. The man who carried out the crime was Maje's boyfriend, Salvador Rodrigo.

María Jesús Moreno was 27 years old at the time of her late husband's murder. According to the Spanish magazine La Razón, Maje was raised in a religious family and was one of five siblings. She met Antonio while she was studying nursing. He was attending the same university as her brother and often visited the house. They officially started dating in 2011, when she was 21 and he was 30.
The couple moved into an apartment in Valencia, located in the Patraix neighborhood. She was employed at Casa de la Salud Hospital, while he worked at the El Rebollar Road Maintenance Center. The magazine reported that even before they tied the knot on Sept. 3, 2016, Maje was 'unfaithful' to her husband. Allegedly, her relationship with a physiotherapist got back to Antonio. He was about to call off the wedding, but she managed to convince him that he was the love of her life.

Salvador Rodrigo, who also worked at Maje's hospital, became involved in a romantic relationship with her. He was 20 years her senior, married, and the father of a daughter in her late twenties. La Razón reported that Salvador and Maje met in secret, exchanged letters, and that he attempted to leave his family to be with her. She allegedly continued seeing Salvador after her wedding to Antonio and was involved in several other extramarital affairs.

According to La Razón, after a lunch date at Salvador's country home in Ribarroja, Maje told Salvador that her husband was psychologically abusing her. She reportedly told her boyfriend that she wanted to see her husband dead. They crafted a meticulous plan and determined that the best way to kill Antonio would be in the garage on a day that was convenient for both of their jobs.
Salvador later confessed that before the killing, he started to become nervous. He allegedly expressed his hesitations to Maje, like not wanting to kill a man he didn't even know, but she allegedly pressured him to carry out the crime, the magazine reported.

At 7:30 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 16, 2017, as Antonio was leaving for work, Salvador hid in the couple's building garage, according to TIME. He was armed with a 15 cm kitchen knife. When Antonio came down, Salvador attacked him and stabbed him to death, piercing his lungs and heart. He discarded the murder weapon in a cesspit on his property and disposed of his bloody clothes. He then met with Maje, who had not been at the apartment during the crime. That's when Maje began playing the role of the grieving widow—including reading a farewell letter at Antonio's funeral, per La Razón.

After police weren't convinced that robbery was the motive for the killing, investigators began to focus on Maje. They tapped her phone and discovered a message to a friend in which she admitted feeling liberated after Antonio's death and said she was now collecting his €1,100 pension, La Razón reported.
Now under surveillance, Maje called Salvador for the first time since the murder on Nov. 8, 2017, and they had one of many incriminating conversations. On Jan. 2, they met in person to discuss what she would say if the police questioned her again. Ten days later, Maje and Salvador were arrested in January 2018.
While Salvador tried to take full responsibility for the murder, he changed his story after learning that Maje was romantically seeing another inmate while in custody. 'In my previous statement, I said it was all my idea. But it was both of us,' Salvador said in a recording played end of A Widow's Game.
Salvador's defense claimed that he was the victim of the obsessive love he felt for Maje. He also alleged that Maje portrayed herself as a victim of psychological and physical abuse. According to TIME, she also said that if her husband died, she wouldn't have to go through a divorce, which meant she could still receive a widow's pension and inheritance.
Meanwhile, Maje denied any involvement in her husband's death. Despite the growing evidence against her – including phone calls, incriminating text messages, and witness testimonies – Maje said she believed Salvador was only fantasizing about what he was going to do to Antonio.
In October 2020, a jury found both Maje and Salvador guilty. Maje was sentenced to 22 years in prison for murder with the aggravating circumstance of kinship. Salvador was sentenced to 17 years in prison, and both were ordered to pay €250,000 (approximately $280,000) in damages to Antonio's family.
Maje is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence at Fontcalent Prison in Alicante, Spain. She became pregnant by another inmate, and in July 2023, gave birth in police custody. She is now residing in the prison's mother-child unit, where she can stay with her baby until the child turns three, per TIME. As for the identity of the baby's father – his name is David, a prisoner convicted of a 2008 murder. They reportedly met while she was serving time at Picassent Prison.
A Widow's Game is now streaming on Netflix. Watch the official trailer below.

Dana Chandler sentenced to life in prison after third murder trial

Dana Chandler, 65, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2002 murders of her ex-husband Mike Sisco and his girlfriend Karen Harkness on June 3, 2025. Judge Cheryl Rios handed down two consecutive life terms and Chandler will not be eligible for parole for 50 years, with credit for about 13 years of time she has already served. Hailey Seel, Chandler and Sisco's daughter, gave a victim impact statement at sentencing. According to The Kansas Reflector, Seel said about her mother in court, "I truly see her now as the evil killer. I hate it. I don't want to call you evil killer, but I can't live in a fairy tale." Seel reportedly recommended the judge to show mercy on Chandler if she confessed to the crime and expressed remorse. But if Chandler continued to deny her involvement, Seel recommended the judge should impose the maximum sentence. Pool photography by Evert Nelson/The Capital-Journal/USA Today Network The Kansas Reflector reported Chandler continued to deny involvement in the crimes, stating, "I have always maintained my innocence. I continue to maintain my innocence. I was not in Topeka, Kansas, on July 7. I never owned or possessed a 9-millimeter firearm. What is happening in this courtroom is a grave injustice. I was not the one who killed them." Sisco, 47, and Harkness, 53, were each shot multiple times with a 9mm gun on July 7, 2002, in Harkness' Topeka, Kansas, home. Police quickly suspected Chandler after members of the Harkness and Sisco families said she harassed Sisco with bizarre visits and frequent phone calls following their bitter divorce and custody battle. She was questioned by police but was not charged. Chandler has always maintained her innocence. "48 Hours" has been covering the case since 2008, and most recently in "My Mother's Murder Trials" reported by contributor Jim Axelrod. For years, the couple's families met with law enforcement and even conducted their own investigation looking for additional evidence, such as the murder weapon, which was never found. At that time, Shawnee County District Attorney Robert Hecht reportedly said there was not enough evidence to charge Chandler. In 2011, a new DA, Chad Taylor, was in office and made the decision to move the case forward. Dana Chandler was arrested in 2011 and entered not guilty pleas to two counts of first-degree murder. A jury convicted Chandler in 2012, and she was sentenced to life in prison. Six years later, Chandler's convictions were overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct. The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that statements made at Chandler's trial by prosecutor Jacqie Spradling was, in at least one instance, "made-up" and "misleading." Spradling was later disbarred for what the court called "intolerable acts of deception" aimed at the jury and the courts. "48 Hours" reached out to Spradling, but did not receive a response. But the Kansas Supreme Court did not dismiss Chandler's case. It ruled that there was still sufficient evidence for a jury to find Chandler guilty. The decision whether to retry Chandler was up to the new Shawnee County DA Mike Kagay, and he chose to proceed with another trial. Chandler's second trial began in July 2022. Defense attorney Tom Bath argued there was no DNA, fingerprint or hair evidence that placed Chandler inside the Harkness residence, or even in the state of Kansas. Shawnee County Deputy DA Charles Kitt acknowledged the lack of physical evidence and told the jury the case was instead based on jealousy, rage and obsession. The jury in this trial was unable to reach a unanimous decision. After six days of deliberation, the judge announced a hung jury, reportedly with seven votes to convict and five to acquit. Following the hung jury, the judge reduced Chandler's bond, and after being incarcerated for more than a decade, she was released from jail with GPS monitoring. The defense also requested a change of venue for the upcoming trial, which the judge granted. Chandler's third trial got underway in February 2025, in Pottawatomie County, 60 miles from Topeka. On the morning of opening statements, Chandler dismissed her attorneys and announced she would represent herself. At trial, Chandler's children, Hailey Seel and Dustin Sisco — who were teenagers at the time of the murders — testified for the prosecution, as they had done previously. They both believe their mother, Dana Chandler, is responsible for murdering their father, Mike Sisco, and Karen Harkness. They were also questioned by their mother. When it was time to present her case, Chandler testified for approximately 20 hours, spread over seven days. She argued that no one could place her at the scene of the murders, or even in the state of Kansas at the time of the killings, and that she had never owned or possessed a .9mm firearm. Deputy DA Kitt focused on Chandler's obsessive behavior and told the jury she killed Sisco and Harkness because she had lost control of her ex-husband. The jury deliberated nearly four hours before finding Chandler guilty. Hailey Seel says she was relieved by the verdict but hopes that the lives lost are not forgotten. "I do feel like the focus of this case has gone almost completely to Dana Chandler and that the — the victims and the families of the victims has really been lost in this case, which is really sad. And I hope that from here out the — the victims and the families can be remembered more," Seel told "48 Hours." Chandler is filing motions to appeal the conviction. "48 Hours" reached out to Chandler for comment, but did not receive a response. contributed to this report.

Prosecutors to seek death penalty in Half Moon Bay mass shooting case

Prosecutors in San Mateo County said they will seek the death penalty against the man suspected of killing seven people in Half Moon Bay at his upcoming trial. District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe announced the decision Tuesday in the case of Chunli Zhao. The 66-year-old is accused of shooting eight people at two mushroom farms on Jan. 23, 2023. Authorities said Zhao shot several people at the California Terra Gardens where he worked, killing four and wounding a fifth victim. Zhao is also accused of fatally shooting three more people at Concord Farms, where he was previously an employee, before surrendering to authorities. FILE - Chunli Zhao appears for his arraignment at San Mateo Superior Court in Redwood City, Calif., on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023. Zhao, a farmworker charged with killing seven people at two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms told investigators he was spurred to carry out the shootings after his supervisor demanded he pay $100 to repair a forklift damaged at work. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group via AP, Pool,File) Shae Hammond / AP The victims who died have been identified as Yetao Bing, 43, Zhishen Liu, 73, Aixiang Zhang, 74, Qizhong Cheng, 66, Jingzhi Lu, 64, Marciano Martinez Jimenez, 50, and Jose Romero Perez, 38. Zhao pleaded not guilty in Feb. 2023 to seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and remains in custody. A judge has granted a defense request for a gag order in the case. An executive order signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2019 has suspended the state's use of the death penalty and closed the state's execution chamber at San Quentin, but did not change the sentencing of any inmates. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the state currently has 587 people on death row. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 6 to set a trial date, prosecutors said.

Washington state father wanted for murder after 3 daughters found dead

A Washington state man is wanted on suspicion of murder after his three young daughters were reported missing and subsequently found dead. Travis Decker, 32, is wanted on three counts of murder and kidnapping, according to Wenatchee Police. Wenatchee is located about 100 miles east of Seattle. Police said it was unknown whether Decker was armed. He is a former Army soldier with "extensive training." On Friday, the girls' mother reported that their father did not return them after a planned visit, police said. The girls were aged nine, eight and five. Over the weekend, authorities searched for the children and their father, who was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup with Washington state plates. Police said Decker's truck was found unoccupied on Monday near a campground west of the city of Leavenworth, which is about 20 miles northwest of Wenatchee. Chelan County Sheriff's Office deputies found the girls' bodies in "relatively close proximity to that vehicle," police said. Police believe the girls, whose wrists were zip-tied, died from asphyxiation, according to court documents. Anyone who may have seen Decker since Friday or knows where he may be was asked to contact police. "Due to safety concerns do not attempt to contact or approach Decker," police said. The mother told police that Decker picked the girls up around 5 p.m. on Friday but did not return them by 8 p.m. and his phone went straight to voicemail, court documents said. A detective said she "expressed concern because Decker reportedly has never done this before and … is currently experiencing some mental health issues." "What prompted her to call us was that ... he was late returning the girls and had not communicated to her that he was going to be late, which was his typical fashion and so this was out of the ordinary," Capt. Brian Chance said. The sheriff's office, which located the truck, was leading the search in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest area while other teams followed up on "potential credible information and tips" about Decker's location, the agency said in a statement. The agency was working with U.S. Marshals to search for Decker. A reward of up to $20,000 was available for information leading directly to his arrest. "Travis, if you're listening, this is your opportunity to turn yourself in," Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said at a press conference Tuesday. "Do the right thing, do what you need to do. And take accountability for your actions. We're not gonna go away, we're not going to rest, and we're gonna make sure we find you.
