FIA approves GM to become F1 engine supplier in '29

Gulf Today24-04-2025

General Motors engines will be available for use in Formula 1 races beginning in 2029, FIA, the circuit's governing body, announced on Wednesday.
GM will power cars for the Cadillac F1 team, a new entity that will start racing in 2026. The Cadillac team will use Ferrari engines from 2026 through 2028 before making the switch to GM engines.
"With this approval from the FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid," Russ O'Blenes, the CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC, said in a statement.
Last year, a GM bid proposed by the Andretti organization was approved by FIA but rejected by F1. Now GM is in, partnering with the Cadillac team.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said in a statement, "Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.
"Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.
"Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA's vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide -- welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fan base."
GM has teamed with TWG Motorsports to create an entity known as TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC. ESPN reported the company is making a $150 million investment in developing and testing, the latter of which will move next year to GM's Charlotte Technical Center.

Talent Shortage in Finance a Serious Issue, says AURAK; Stresses Need for More Focused Programs

Talent Shortage in Finance a Serious Issue, says AURAK; Stresses Need for More Focused Programs Against a global shortage of finance professionals, the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is addressing the issue by pursuing a vision of molding competent modern-day finance specialists through specialized programs. While the demand for finance professionals has been growing dramatically, driven by data analytics and fintech, as reflected in the rising enrolments at universities, talent shortage has been a matter of concern. According to global recruitment agency Omega Hire, the global finance industry is facing a significant shortage of skilled professionals across sectors, including accounting, banking, investment management, insurance, and fintech. A report by Cooper Fitch's Salary Guide UAE 2024 highlighted a significant talent shortage in the UAE. This is because the rapid pace of technological advancements, regulatory changes, and evolving business models require a workforce that is agile, skilled, and up to date with the latest industry developments. However, talent shortage is not just a local issue but part of a global trend. According to a PwC report, 92% of financial services leaders around the world report difficulties in hiring the talent they need. Universities like AURAK are responding to the market need by designing tailored programs. AURAK's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration BSBA (major in Finance), launched in 2020, has been updated to meet the challenge of talent shortage. Its graduates are trained to pursue career opportunities in booming fields such as investment banking, corporate finance, financial planning, asset management, and consulting. Graduates are encouraged to use entry-level positions as a gateway to advanced roles, such as pursuing advanced certifications like CFA and CPA. Prof. Stephen Wilhite, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Success, and Provost at AURAK, says: 'The finance industry plays a pivotal role in the modern global economy, driving businesses, managing risks, and shaping strategic investments. With a dynamic job market and diverse opportunities, the finance sector continues to thrive, even amid technological disruptions and global economic shifts and talent shortage. We at AURAK have crafted a program that molds professionals to join this booming industry and build a satisfying career for themselves.' The AURAK BSBA Major in Finance follows an American-style curriculum, accredited by international recognized bodies like SACSCOC and AACSB. The program is also accredited by an international professional accountancy body, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the UK, to ensure that the AURAK graduates are internationally recognized in the accounting profession. Additionally, it is affiliated with the CFA Institute. 'We have designed this program to equip graduates with versatile skills applicable across industries, especially valuable in our interconnected global economy,' explains Prof. Vazeer Jan Begum, Associate Dean/Professor, School of Business, AURAK. 'The world of finance is evolving, and practitioners are challenged to keep pace with disruptive developments triggered by AI, Blockchain, and emerging technologies. This program addresses all these issues and keeps students at the top of the game.' Graduates acquire competencies to take up challenging roles in banks, Big 4 accounting firms, multinational (fast-moving consumer goods) FMCGs, tech giants, export/import firms, manufacturing, logistics, retail, consulting firms, tech scale-ups, and family businesses expanding abroad. The BSBA program can lead to a highly lucrative career path. Based on the latest available data (2023–2024) from UAE government sources, recruitment agencies, and salary surveys, the average monthly salary range for fresh Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) graduates in the UAE starts at between AED 6,000 and AED 12,000; and could grow to AED 15,000 in two years.

2025 a standout year for FIA championship: Ben Sulayem

The UAE's prominence on the global motorsport stage has been underlined for another year with confirmation of the FIA's major world championship calendars for 2026. The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take place at Yas Marina Circuit from December 4-6 next year in a championship, which will see the next generation of F1 cars running on 100% sustainable fuels. This was confirmed at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau on Tuesday, which was chaired by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem as the federation's global community gathered for the FIA's annual conference. The 2026 FI World Championship again includes three other Middle East rounds, in Bahrain on April 10-12, Saudi Arabia from April 17-19 and Qatar from November 27-29. Saudi again stages back-to-back Jeddah races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar on February 13-14, while the Middle East also has four rounds in the 2026 F2 Championship coinciding with the F1 races in Bahrain, Saudi, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem speaks during the meeting. Once again, the Dakar Rally in Saudi commences next year's FIA World Rally-Raid Championship from January 3-17, with the Rally du Maroc taking place from September 28 to October 3 and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge on November 22-27. Bahrain represents the Middle East in the ten-round F3 calendar. Ben Sulayem told World Motor Sport Council members: '2025 is proving to be an exciting year across all our championships with technological milestones being reached, new talent emerging, and battles being fought on the track and across stages each week. 'This year is a powerful opportunity for us to innovate and grow. New agreements across our championships are unlocking fresh potential, we are enhancing the level of competition and expanding our global reach. Each race across our championships shows the passion and dedication of our community.' The World Council approved one of the final pieces of the compelling puzzle that is coming together to mark the start of a brand-new era for the FIA World Rally Championship from 2027. The WRC27 rule set has been undergoing its final refinements and updates over the past six months, and confirmation in Macau of the reference volumes for bodywork cements the commitment set out by the FIA to put flexibility at the core of these regulations. To achieve this, the rules define a zone in which all of the bodywork panels must be located, but within this volume, manufacturers and constructors have the freedom to scale and integrate almost any design. This means that, without effecting performance, cars ranging from saloons to hatchbacks, cross-overs and completely bespoke designs could be entered over the ten-year regulation cycle through to 2037. Meanwhile, a new street circuit in Madrid will make its debut on the Formula 1 schedule in September of next year, replacing the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
