Fox analyst Nick Wright launches blistering Michael Jordan attack over move to become an NBA analyst

Daily Mail14-05-2025

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright threw a jab at Michael Jordan this week after the legendary basketball player's new broadcasting role was announced.
It was revealed on Monday that Jordan would be serving as a 'special contributor' for NBC and Peacock's NBA coverage starting in the fall.
But Wright couldn't resist taking a shot at the six-time NBA champion after the news was announced.
'Michael Jordan's going to join NBC as a contributor. Listen, NBC is a different network, but fair is fair, I got to give credit where it's due,' he began on his What's Wright? podcast.
'I mean, if they're going to use him the way he should be used, that is going to be an unbelievable addition. And by that I mean, he should be their gambling expert.'
The comment is a reference to Jordan's well-known and checked history of gambling throughout his playing career.
Nick Wright drops an absolute gem on the new Michael Jordan/NBC partnership…

The ultra-competitive Jordan enjoyed preying on his teammates during card games, but he also took things to much higher stakes.
After golf hustler James 'Slim' Bouler was arrested on money laundering and drug charges, Jordan - who had previously written him a $57,000 check - was ordered to testify in 1992.
The basketball star eventually admitted that the check was to cover gambling debt from their golf matchups. Bouler was ultimately sentenced to nine years in prison, with a jury acquitting him of conspiring to traffic cocaine.
In 1993, during a playoff series against the Knicks, Jordan was even caught gambling in the early hours of the morning in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
And some fans have even pushed the conspiracy theory that his first retirement in 1993 - in which he took 18 months off to play baseball - was actually a secret suspension due to his gambling habits.
Both Jordan and former commissioner David Stern strongly denied that claim in 'The Last Dance,' while Jordan also had to be approved by the league to become the Hornets' owner.
Regardless, his role on NBC will be a welcome sight for many fans as the network re-gains NBA rights under the league's new media deal.
Like Wright, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith also wondered how Jordan's new employer would utilize him.
'I just wanna know, is it gonna be the Michael Jordan you see on television? Or is it gonna be the Michael Jordan we speak to? Because if it's the Michael Jordan we speak to, it's gonna be epic,' he said on First Take.
'The things that he will say, and the way that he says them, and the way that he breaks them down, lord have mercy.'
'... But if it's NBC and the little kids out there are watching and he wants to mind his manners about every little syllable he utters - eh, he'll be alright.'

Austin Wells knocks in five as Yankees thrash Royals

June 11 - Austin Wells clubbed a three-run homer and matched a career high with five RBIs while Aaron Judge set the tempo with a first-inning two-run shot, and the New York Yankees rolled to a 10-2 victory over the host Kansas City Royals. New York starter Max Fried (9-1) took sole possession of the major league lead for wins after allowing two runs and six hits without a walk over seven innings. He struck out four while lowering his ERA to 1.84. The Yankees rebounded after losing two straight to the Boston Red Sox. The Royals took their third loss in a row. From the ninth spot, Wells was the offensive star, also delivering a two-RBI double during a five-run sixth for the Yankees, who recorded 16 hits while improving to 4-0 vs. Kansas City this season. The Royals' Noah Cameron (2-2) entered with an 0.85 ERA through his first five career starts, but he yielded the homers to Judge and Wells, plus five other hits, while permitting six runs in 5 2/3 innings. He fanned six and walked one. Jonathan India homered for Kansas City, which has averaged 3.2 runs during its current 10-17 stretch. Judge wasted no time delivering his personal major league welcome to Cameron. After Trent Grisham drew a one-out walk in the first inning, Judge drove the ball 469 feet off the top of the Royals' Hall of Fame area in left field. Kansas City halved its deficit in the second. Vinnie Pasquantino led off with an infield single and eventually scored from third on rookie Jac Caglianone's groundout. Cameron retired eight straight until Jasson Dominguez (three hits) blooped a single into right field with two outs in the fourth. DJ LeMahieu then singled and Wells capped a nine-pitch at-bat by barely clearing the right field fence for a 5-1 Yankees lead. In the New York sixth, Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled, and after Cameron left with two outs, Taylor Clarke came on and walked LeMahieu. The right-hander then yielded Wells' double just inside the right field line that plated both runners. After Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single, Grisham, Judge and Cody Bellinger each delivered a RBI single. India cleared the center field wall off Fried to open the bottom of the sixth. Chisholm exited in the seventh with neck tightness. --Field Level Media

Mavericks, Pistons to play game in Mexico City on Nov. 1

June 11 - The Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons will play a regular-season game on Nov. 1 at Mexico City's Arena CDMX. The NBA confirmed on Tuesday its 34th game in Mexico, the most of any country outside the U.S. and Canada. The game will be celebrated as part of the "Dia de Muertos" (Day of the Dead) celebrations locally, including a variety of in-game activations, a themed court and initiatives for fans. This is the second consecutive year for the "Dia de Muertos" theme. Last year's game featured the Miami Heat vs. the Washington Wizards at the Arena CDMX on Nov. 2. "The Mavericks and Pistons are two exciting teams that feature a mix of established and rising stars," NBA Latin America senior VP/head of operations Raul Zarraga said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming them back to Mexico and to once again celebrating 'Dia de Muertos' with the passionate NBA fans in Mexico and from across Latin America." The Mavericks, who possess the top pick in the 2025 draft (expected to be Duke star Cooper Flagg), will be playing their eighth game in Mexico. The Pistons, who just finished one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in NBA history while earning the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, will be playing their third game south of the border. The live broadcast of the event is expected to stretch around the world, reaching more than 200 countries and territories via television, digital media and social media. "The Detroit Pistons organization is excited to be participating in the NBA Mexico City Game 2025 next season," Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said in a statement. "Playing a regular-season game in Mexico City will be a great experience for our players and coaches, and we look forward to showcasing Detroit basketball to an international audience and a passionate, growing NBA fanbase." Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said in a statement, "The vibrancy of Mexico City and the passion of its fans make it the perfect place to host these Global Games, and we are thrilled at the opportunity to represent the NBA and the city of Dallas in Mexico City for the eighth time." --Field Level Media

LA protests live: Curfew enforced in parts of Downtown as Trump claims ‘paid agitators' targeted police with bricks

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced a curfew in the city in response to vandalism amid the protests against ICE raids. The curfew will be enforced from 8 p.m. local time Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, and anyone who breaks the curfew will be arrested, Bass warned. Donald Trump flirted with invoking the Insurrection Act, which allows the domestic use of the military, in remarks on Tuesday in the Oval Office. The president has already deployed thousands of federalized National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in response to protests over his immigration raids. The total cost of the deployment to date has been disclosed as $134 million, with Trump claiming that without them, the city 'would be burning to the ground right now.' Bass has dismissed those claims, given that the Guard is protecting two federal buildings and local law enforcement has been quelling civil unrest triggered by ICE raids. She has vowed to pursue vandals and looters to the fullest extent of the law after more stores were looted on Monday. California Governor Gavin Newsom, who claims the presence of troops exacerbates tensions, has asked a judge for an emergency injunction regarding the troop deployment, arguing it is 'unlawful,' as well as 'excessive and unnecessary.' A hearing is set for Thursday. Speaking to soldiers at Fort Bragg on Tuesday afternoon, Trump accused the mayor and governor of paying 'agitators' and 'insurrectionists' who he claimed came ready with bricks to throw. Trump has since seemed to walk back his claims, saying, 'I didn't say the governor or the mayor. I said, somebody's paying them, I think.' Pinned What you need to know so far... President Donald Trump deployed 4,000 federalized National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in response to protests over immigration raids, costing $134 million to date. Mayor Karen Bass refuted Trump's claim that the city would be 'burning to the ground' without the troops, noting the Guard is protecting federal buildings while local law enforcement handles unrest. California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration and sought an emergency injunction, deeming the troop deployment 'unlawful,' 'excessive,' and 'unnecessary.' A judge rejected Newsom's emergency injunction and allowed the Trump administration more time to respond to the governor's court filing. Democrats in Congress said that the militarization seen in Los Angeles was a warning to other Americans. After Trump claimed he spoke to Newsom about the unrest on Monday, the governor said the president doesn't even know who he is talking to, as the call didn't happen. Mayor Bass said that the solution to the violence gripping the city is an end to the raids by ICE. The LAPD didn't say if the suspects were part of the ongoing protests against ICE raids in the city. Nejdeh Avedian, a general manager at one of the stores that wasn't broken into, told the AP that the demonstrators had already left at that point. 'These guys were just opportunists,' Avedian said. Jesus Jimenez, a New York Times reporter based in Los Angeles, wrote shortly before 7:20 p.m. local time, 'Downtown Los Angeles already seems much quieter than yesterday. 'There are still small pockets of protesters in some areas, but streets that were packed with demonstrators 24 hours ago are almost clear.' 'If you incite violence or destroy our communities, you're going to be held to account. That kind of criminal behavior will not be tolerated. Full stop,' Newsom said. The governor said that officials are reviewing footage to build more cases, 'and people will be prosecuted.' Most protesters have been peaceful, but there have been some bad actors. Rachel Dobkin11 June 2025 03:30 Newsom takes jab at Trump, telling Americans 'do not give into him' California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken another jab at President Donald Trump in their ongoing feud over the Los Angeles protests against ICE raids in the city. Newsom said in a major address Tuesday night, 'I know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress and fear. But I want you to know that you are the antidote to that fear and that anxiety. What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty. Your silence. To be complicit in this moment. Do not give in to him.' In an unprecedented move, Trump deployed thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles without Newsom's permission in response to the protests. Newsom claimed the move was illegal and a 'brazen abuse of power' Tuesday night. The governor said that the 'situation was winding down' in Los Angeles before Trump deployed the military. 'But that's not what Donald Trump wanted,' Newsom claimed. Trump has claimed that without deploying the military, Los Angeles 'would be burning to the ground right now.' But when we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up. We have to do what's right. Growing up in LA, I've seen how deeply immigrants are woven into the fabric of this city. They are our neighbors, friends, classmates, coworkers, and family. No matter where you fall politically, it's clear that our communities thrive because of the contributions of immigrants. We can't turn a blind eye when fear and injustice keep people from living their lives freely and safely. There HAS to be a BETTER way.'
