Lamine Yamal: Teenage superstar stars as Spain beats France in Nations League semifinal goalfest

CNN13 hours ago

CNN —
Before a ball was even kicked on Thursday, the UEFA Nations League semifinal between France and Spain was billed as a clash of two modern greats, and the match certainly didn't disappoint.
Inspired by the likes of teenage superstar Lamine Yamal, La Roja managed to get the better of the goalfest, beating Les Bleus 5-4 in an all-time classic.
The result means Spain will progress through to the final where it will face Portugal on June 8.
The nine-goal thriller, the highest scoring match in the tournament's short history, is perhaps less surprising when you consider the number of world-class forwards on the pitch.
France boasted attacking talents such as Kylian Mbappé, as well as Champions League heroes Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé, but it was 17-year-old Spanish star Yamal who once again stole the show.
The teenager scored two goals in the match and produced another memorable performance which has perhaps convinced even more people of his Ballon d'Or credentials.
'When two great teams like this play, you sometimes see a lot of goals,' Yamal said after the match.
'They will make you suffer until the end, but we went to the final despite the mistakes we made. We were aware of what we wanted to do. We wanted to make history. The greatest thing when you are winning is to keep winning.'

The youngster had a part to play in Spain's opening goal, beating his man on the right wing before crossing into the box. The ball was brilliantly held up by Mikel Oyarzabal before the striker teed up Nico Williams who rifled his finish into the roof of the net in the 22nd minute.
Just three minutes later and the Euro 2024 champions had doubled their lead. Oyarzabal once again provided the assist, but this time it was Arsenal man Mikel Merino who produced the finish as Spain took a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The second half saw more free-flowing attacking play and Yamal soon got on the scoresheet.
The winger was brought down in the box and stepped up to take the subsequent penalty. Despite his age, Yamal looked confident before passing his spotkick into the back of the net in the 53rd minute.
Two minutes later and France found itself 4-0 down, after midfielder Pedri produced a wonderfully chipped finish to seemingly put the game to bed.
But it was then time for France and Mbappé to take center stage. The Real Madrid striker responded with a penalty of his own in the 59th minute to cut the deficit to 4-1.
But the French revival was cut short by Yamal, after the youngster raced onto a through ball to poke Spain 5-1 ahead.
France comeback falls short
Perhaps confident of the victory, Spain seemed to take its foot off the gas which opened the door for a possible comeback from Les Bleus.
Debutant Rayan Cherki scored the goal of the game in the 79th minute, with his sweetly struck volley making it 5-2.
An own-goal from Spain's Dani Vivian then gave France a glimmer of hope in the closing stages and the comeback was almost complete when Randal Kolo Muani made it 5-4 in added time.

But France simply ran out of time and looked frustrated when the referee blew his whistle for full-time.
'We had some bursts of play we haven't had for a long time,' Mbappé said after the game, trying to sum up the frantic 90 minutes.
'But in just 10 minutes of the first half, we conceded two goals – and the same thing happened in the second half.'
Spain's win now sets up a brilliant all-Iberian final against Portugal, which will see 17-year-old Yamal come up against 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo in a battle of two generational greats.

Jack Grealish needs regular football to make England's World Cup squad, says Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has told Jack Grealish he needs to play regular football if he wants to force his way into England's World Cup plans. The Manchester City player is facing an uncertain future at the club after a frustrating season. He made just seven starts in the Premier League and failed to come off the bench at the recent FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. He is also set to be excluded from City's squad for the forthcoming Club World Cup in the United States. Advertisement Grealish has been capped 39 times by England but has not featured since the 3-1 Nations League win over Finland in October under interim manager Lee Carsley. He is yet to be called up by new head coach Tuchel. The German, speaking before England's World Cup qualifer against Andorra on Saturday, said that he had spoken to Grealish before his first international camp in March and again shortly after the Cup final last month. But he left Grealish, 29, in no doubt that if he wishes to come into contention for the 2026 World Cup, he needs consistent game time. He said: 'He needs to make himself available by playing. I think it's one of his key strengths. To go every three days and get better and better with every minute that he has in his legs. That's what is missing, nothing else. 'I love Jack for his personality and of course his talent. He is a very unique player who can handle big pressure on the field. He is never shy of pressure. It's the opposite. 'He grows in big matches, but he's a player who needs minutes and minutes and minutes and simply does not get them for a very long time. That's basically everything. Nothing has changed.' Grealish joined City in 2021 from Aston Villa for a then-British record fee of £100million and has made 157 appearances, scoring 17 goals and assisting 23. He has won three Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League. ()

French Open finals odds: Aryna Sabalenka favored vs. Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz tight

The French Open couldn't have asked for much more in terms of the two matchups for the finals set to take place later this weekend. On the women's side, there will be a first-time champion, but it's World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against young American star Coco Gauff. The men's side features the two dominant forces in the sport in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Advertisement While Iga Świątek has been dominant at Roland Garros in recent years, and Novak Djokovic remains the biggest name in tennis, both were beaten by the No. 1 players in the world in the semifinals. Their absence in the finals does not take away from the marquee matchups Paris will host. Both finals feature the top two seeds in their respective draws. In the women's final, Sabalenka is favored against Gauff with -210 odds on BetMGM. Sabalenka's run to this final, which included a 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-0 win against three-time defending champ Świątek in the semis, continues her tear through Grand Slams in the last three calendar years. The 27-year-old has made the semifinals in nine of her last 10 Grand Slam appearances. This is her sixth final in the last nine. If that run wasn't enough, getting by Świątek in Paris showed that Sabalenka is the clear No. 1 in the world. However, she has never won the French Open, and Gauff has beaten her in a Slam final before. Gauff knocked off Sabalenka in a shocking upset in the 2023 U.S. Open final 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. This is Gauff's first final since her triumph in New York. The 21-year-old did make a French Open final back in 2022, when she lost in straight sets to Świątek. Of Sabalenka's six Grand Slam finals, four have been against Americans. In addition to the meetings with Gauff, she beat Jessica Pegula at the U.S. Open in 2024 and lost to Madison Keys in Australia earlier this year. While Sabalenka is a clear betting favorite, the head-to-head history shows an even matchup. In 10 meetings, each has won five times, although Sabalenka has won three of the past four meetings. They're also even in a pair of meetings on clay. Sabalenka won the most recent clay-court match, a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win in the Madrid Open final in early May. The men's final is far closer in the odds with Alcaraz getting a slight edge against Sinner. On BetMGM, Alcaraz is -115 while Sinner is -102. Sinner is fresh off beating Djokovic in a way that few have. The Italian dictated play throughout and won 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (3). Not only has Sinner not lost a set yet in Paris, but that third set against Djokovic was the first time he even had to play a tiebreaker. Advertisement Alcaraz's path has been tougher with four four-set matches, but he hasn't been pushed to the five-set limit yet. In Friday's first semifinal, Alcaraz was down a set to Lorenzo Musetti and faced a second-set tiebreaker. Alcaraz won that tiebreaker and didn't lose another game after Musetti suffered a groin injury that significantly affected him. Musetti retired two games into the fourth set, and Alcaraz got off the court in less than 2 1/2 hours. Sinner has won the last two Slams, and a win Sunday would make it reasonable that he could be the reigning champion of all four at the same time. Still, all three of Sinner's Slam titles have come on hard court. Alcaraz has four Slams and is the defending French Open champion. It appears that Sinner (23) and Alcaraz (22) could be the new premier rivalry in the sport, but this is the first time they've met in a Grand Slam final. Will Sunday's match be a bit of tennis history before these two meet in several Slam finals in their careers? Sinner and Alcaraz have met in three finals on tour. Sinner beat Alcaraz 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1 at the Croatia Open in 2022 on clay, but Alcaraz has the two wins since. Alcaraz topped Sinner 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (3) on hard court in China last year and in the Italian Open final on clay last month 7-6 (5), 6-1. Under-pressure Italy coach Luciano Spalletti vows to fight on after World Cup defeat to Norway

Luciano Spalletti is under mounting scrutiny as Italy head coach after a 3-0 defeat to Norway which his goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma labelled 'not acceptable'. Spalletti insisted he wanted to 'move forward' as national coach and that he had faith in his 'project' after the defeat in the World Cup qualifier in Oslo. Advertisement Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa and Erling Haaland all scored first-half goals for Norway, who top Group I in UEFA qualification with victories in each of their three matches to date, with Friday's match the first game for Italy in the group. 'There is a lot to improve, but I move forward with these guys,' Spalletti said after the match, in quotes carried by Gazzetta dello Sport. 'And with this project, which is not in question.' Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, meanwhile, has called on his international team-mates to take responsibility after the defeat. 'I have no words,' Donnarumma, who won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain six days previously, said after the game. 'We need to take note of the performance tonight and improve: our fans don't deserve this. 'We need to examine our conscience, we need to come out of these nights together. We have to find the strength because we're Italy: these types of matches are not acceptable, everyone has to take responsibility. We have to be more united than ever, we need it.' Italy and Norway are joined by Israel (six points from three games), Estonia (three points from three games) and Moldova (no points from two games) in the group. Spalletti, 66, replaced Roberto Mancini as Italy head coach in August 2023 and oversaw a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign with a last-16 elimination to Switzerland. The experienced coach guided Napoli to the Serie A title in 2022-23, the club's first league crown in 33 years. (FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP via Getty Images)
