WATCH: Tau, Masilela amongst the fans to pay tribute to Orlando Pirates captain
Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela bid farewell to the fans after playing his final match for the club.
The 32-year-old left-back played 67 minutes during the Buccaneers' disappointing 1-1 draw with Magesi at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night. After the match, Pirates fans paid tribute to Maela, who dedicated eight years of service to the club.
Among the spectators were Kaizer Chiefs legend Tsepo Masilela and Bafana Bafana winger Percy Tau, who came to support the defender in his last game for the Sea Robbers.
Orlando Pirates interim coach Mandla Ncikazi also honoured his captain during the post-match press conference.
'He's a product of this institution. I remember the first time I met him, he was playing for Thanda Royal Zulu and I was still in KZN, I saw this fast winger that I wanted to poach, but was told, 'He belongs to the big institution so you know what should happen,' said Ncikazi.
'A great human being; sometimes we look at players and we forget they are members of society, it becomes very good when you have a good human being and a good player, and it's such people who continue being a leader even if you are not on the field of play.'
Ncikazi confirmed that Maela would be taking another direction in his career.
'He's highly intelligent and I'm sure he's highly educated at home and in the institutions of learning – it's a blessing, and I'm sure his career is going to proceed.
'He's that type where it's not the end now, he's just taking another step and direction in his career, based on his humanity and his academic learning.'
With Maela gone, Tapelo Xoki will take over as Orlando Pirates. The tall centre-back has captained the Buccaneers for two seasons in the absence of Maela.

Orlando Pirates transfer news: Four more players to leave?
Are Orlando Pirates finished releasing players? Not a chance. Miguel Timm and Innocent Maela's departures last week are expected to be followed by additional names. Former coach Jose Riveiro successfully recruited new talent from the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), while Orlando Pirates have also made two new signings. According to reports, the Buccaneers are likely to say goodbye to four more players: Gilberto, Katlego Otladisa, Siphelo Baloni, and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo. Soccer Laduma have said: 'Angolan winger Gilberto, who left the club on loan in January, is unlikely to have his stay extended, while Katlego Otladisa, who has struggled for game time and was loaned to Sekhukhune United, could also be among those set to leave. 'Midfielders Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Siphelo Baloni are also understood to be facing uncertain futures at the club, as the club is evaluating who fits into the plans for the long term. 'While the full list of departures is yet to be confirmed, it's clear that the winds of change are sweeping through the Bucs camp, with more announcements expected in the coming days as preparations intensify for the new season,' the report added. SOWETO SWAP: Saleng signs pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs?
Monnapule Saleng is believed (per SoccerLaduma) to have signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs following a tumultuous season at Orlando Pirates. Negotiations between the parties have yet to be confirmed, but if this is the case, Orlando Pirates legend doesn't see it working out for the 27-year-old. 'Is he (Saleng) that type of a player that can really play for Chiefs, the way they are playing? I don't think so,' Vilikazi questioned. 'An example, look at (Gaston) Sirino [at Kaizer Chiefs], he's no more the Sirino we knew at Sundowns, because of the type of players surrounding him.' 'What's happening to Sirino now, is the same thing that happened to Khama Billiat. The same thing that happened to Keagan Dolly and now it's happening to Sirino, you cannot have Sirino alone and not have other good players surrounding him,' he added. 'Obviously he's going to have a lot on his shoulders. So, he needs support. So even if Saleng goes and plays for Kaizer Chiefs, he's going to struggle like Sirino is struggling, because there's no core at Chiefs that is very strong, that when everyone comes in (they fit in) like puzzles. Those pazzles at Chiefs are scattered.' Former Kaizer Chiefs manager Gavin Hunt believes Fiston Mayele would transform AmaKhosi into a title challenging side. 'In the PSL, I think he can be a 30-goal striker, I really do. I think he'll make goals on his own, by just movement, strength and power. [If he signs for Kaizer Chiefs] they win a treble,' Hunt mentioned. The CAF Champions League winner has Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Chiefs vying for his services. Orlando Pirates Monnapule Saleng's move to Kaizer Chiefs: Former Buccaneer doubts transfer rumours
NOT A GOOD FIT Orlando Pirates Monnapule Saleng's potential transfer to Kaizer Chiefs has been met with skepticism from former Buccaneers player Benedict Vilakazi. Picture: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix With unsubstantiated rumours emerging that Orlando Pirates forward Monnapule Saleng might be making a move to Kaizer Chiefs, one former Buccaneers player thinks that would not be a good fit. The 27-year-old Saleng was believed to have been left out of the side for months due to a salary dispute, although the club has not confirmed this as they remained tight-lipped on the situation. As one of the best wingers in the country and not known to be nursing any kind of injury, his absence was keenly felt by Pirates supporters this past season. Saleng was last in action for Pirates on December 7 when they hosted Al Ahly in a CAF Champions League match at Orlando Stadium, which ended in a goalless draw. Saleng, however, was selected for Bafana Bafana in their African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier in Bloemfontein in early March and, by all accounts, delivered a top performance. Former Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi, who spent the majority of his career (1999 - 2007) at the Soweto Giants, weighed in on the Saleng issue.
