Concern for Phil Gould as gruesome eye photo goes viral
Concerns have been raised for Phil Gould after the rugby league icon shared a gruesome photo of his 'new eye' following surgery on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs football boss told followers on X he will be taking a brief break from the game after having a scheduled procedure on his left eye.

Gould showed off the results of the operation with a confronting photo that has gone viral on X with more than 50,000 views.
Social media users have shared their concerns and support for the 67-year-old, who showed off what he called a 'new eye'.
Gould on Monday announced he was booked in for the operation.
'Undergoing eye surgery tomorrow,' he posted.
'Taking the rest of the week off. There will be a special replacement for the Six Tackles with Gus podcast on Wednesday.
'Hopefully I'm back on deck for 100% Footy next Monday Night. Enjoy the weekend round of football ahead everyone.'
He posted on Tuesday with laughing emojis: 'And there it is … A new eye'.
Gould still completed his regular duties on the panel for Nine's 100% Footy on Monday night.
It has been a turbulent year for the rugby league guru, who was last month accused of telling fibs over his actions during the Bulldogs' messy raid to snatch Lachie Galvin away from the Wests Tigers.
He also caused a stir with his criticism of Queensland coach Billy Slater over the Storm legend's decision to axe former captain Daly Cherry-Evans for State of Origin Game 2.
In his personal life, Gould appears to be in rare health after recent weight losses.
Gould has trimmed down in recent years and in 2022 lost more than 10kg after leaving his position as football boss at the Warriors in 2021.
Depending on State allegiances, many will hope to see Gus standing in front of the goal posts for the State of Origin series decider on July 9.

All Blacks legend Tana Umaga believes the First Nations & Pasifika team concept can become a permanent fixture for future Lions tours in Australia and New Zealand. Umaga, assistant coach of the inaugural invitational team to play the Lions in Melbourne on July 22, says it is up to this side to set the tone for what can become a must-watch game each time the touring side is on either side of the Tasman. 'I take my hat off to the ARU (Rugby Australia) for putting on a game like this and acknowledging the First Nations and Pasifika players, obviously there was a space that needed to be filled up, and I'm sure they had plenty of options,' Umaga told Code Sports. 'This is a great opportunity for our cultures to showcase themselves and also, a crop of players that might not have got another chance against a side like this. 'That opens eyes for the coaches as well and another opportunity for these players to stake a claim for higher honours. That's what you want to do. 'You still want to be uplifting of the players, but also the players understand that they're uplifting their cultures and those that are coming behind them. When you've got a strong purpose like that, the key is to make sure that translates into the performance on the field. 'I hope this carries on. And again, that's something that's in our hands, in this group's hands. If we can show a good count of ourselves, then it does make everyone, 'Oh, is there another opportunity for this team to come together?' And we'd hope it does.' The Maori All Blacks have often faced the Lions in New Zealand, but with the country's rich history of producing Pasifika All Blacks stars including Umaga, Jonah Lomu, Richie Mo'unga and Ardie Savea, it would be an easy team to put together when the Lions next tour there in 2029. This First Nations & Pasifika side's head coach, Toutai Kefu, will unveil the team's jersey in Melbourne on Thursday. As part of the coaching staff, Umaga will reprise his hot-and-cold relationship with Lions fans, who were furious with him after the controversial tackle on Irish legend Brian O'Driscoll in the 2005 series put him out of the series in the opening minutes. 'No one hits me up on the streets, you don't have to do that anymore, it's just the random messages online,' Umaga said. 'It just shows you how passionate people are and what it means to them — this game, this team. And these things happen, and no one's forgot about it.' Umaga and O'Driscoll buried the hatchet long ago. 'No doubt we'll catch up for a Guinness when he's in town,' Umaga said. 'We've caught up a few times over the years, and we have a bit of a laugh about it. Life's too short to hold grudges.' Umaga's only focus now is ensuring the team leaves a lasting legacy. 'It's acknowledgment of our people, it's a first time and it's a special game obviously that a team like this has been formed,' he said. 'And that's a proud thing to be a part of. It's the acknowledgment of those that have been before us and those that we represent, our family and loved ones, who got us to this stage to be able to be actually in a team like this that represents them.'

Racing Victoria delays decision on 2026 Cox Plate host
Racing Victoria has pushed back discussions on 2026 Cox Plate hosting rights to early next month. Flemington and Caulfield stay in contention for the historic schedule, a temporary relocation of Australia's best race during The Valley redevelopment set to start after the Cox Plate this year. The RV board met on Tuesday but deferred the 2026 Cox Plate agenda item as metropolitan clubs involved iron out conditions for the transferred fixture. Sources not authorised to speak publicly said Cox Plate rights remained a work in progress. A Cox Plate at Flemington next year could deliver a record 60,000-strong crowd for the prestigious $5m weight-for-age Group 1 and double as a blockbuster start to the Melbourne Cup carnival. Legendary mare Winx drew a record Valley crowd of 38,035 in 2018 for her unprecedented fourth-straight Cox Plate success. The Melbourne Cup carnival has enjoyed a recent spike in crowds, with 285,675 through the gate last year at Flemington for the biggest combined four-day attendance since 2018. Melbourne Cup Day (91,168) and Victoria Derby Day (81,612) led the way, from Champions Stakes Day (62,022) and Oaks Day (50,873). Victoria Racing Club has crowd ambitions of 60,000-plus for the Cox Plate, should Flemington secure the 2026 rights. While unable to compete on crowd and wagering fronts, Melbourne Racing Club could offer a like-for-like Cox Plate spectacle at Caulfield with its boutique atmosphere and tight-turning circuit. Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Adam Lennen endorsed the Cox Plate negotiations. 'We're close but not there yet,' Lennen said. The MVRC has awarded a circa $70m contract for civil and infrastructure works for the new Moonee Valley Racecourse precinct to Symal Group. The scope of work includes bulk earthworks, full track reconstruction, new racing infrastructure, upgraded underpasses, retaining walls and the installation of new track lighting. The MVRC has held early talks with stakeholders, including the AFL, around future infield uses but Lennen said racecourse redevelopment, including grandstand and events centre, is the priority. The Valley infield had been linked as potential base for AFL umpires. The AFL on Tuesday confirmed the purchase of Waverley Park and ambitions for the historic venue to house its talent pathways programs, community footy and umpire development. The Valley infield remains in play as a potential boutique AFLW venue.
