Mysterious pyramid, ancient bronze coins discovered by archaeologists
Archaeologists in the Judean Desert have unearthed a "mysterious pyramid-shaped structure" dating back 2,200 years.
The evacuation was a joint mission between the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and the Ministry of Heritage excavation.
The structure is tied to when the Ptolemies and Seleucids ruled Israel, according to a joint press release.
"What we have here is one of the richest and most intriguing archaeological excavations ever found in the Judean Desert," said IAA excavation directors Matan Toledano, Dr. Eitan Klein and Amir Ganor.
The structure is made of hand-hewn stones with each stone weighing hundreds of pounds.
"We still do not know for certain what the building's purpose was," said the evacuation directors.
The structure is believed to have been a guard tower, a grave marker or even possibly an ancient monument.
"It is an enthralling historical mystery," the directors said in the release.
Bronze coins related to Ptolemies and of Antiochus IV, weapons, wooden tools and fabrics were found too.
The Judean Desert is about 800 meters above the Dead Sea and is a rock desert characterized by numerous wadis cutting through the stone, according to Tourist Israel.
The ancient find provided new information, changing the site's historical record.
"Contrary to previous hypotheses that attributed this structure to the First Temple period, it seems that it was built later – during the Hellenistic period – when the land of Israel was under Ptolemaic rule," said the release.
IAA Director Eli Escusido said, "The Judean Desert survey is one of the most important archaeological operations ever undertaken in the State of Israel's history."
"The discoveries are exciting and even emotional, and their significance for archaeological and historical research is enormous," Escusido added.
In addition to the structure, historical documents, bronze vessels and remains of ancient furniture were also found.

See it: Ancient gold ring dating back over 2,000 years found in Jerusalem
JERUSALEM – A small gold ring embedded with a dark red gemstone dating back to ancient times 2,300 years ago, was recently discovered in the Jerusalem Walls National Park in Israel. The piece of jewelry was found in an excavation of a layer of earth and material from a time known as the Early Hellenistic period. Officials said this is the second gold ring found at the same site from the same time period within just a few months. They were discovered in the foundations of a large building, which connotes the wealth of those who lived inside. Several earrings were also recently discovered in the same layer. A number were made of bronze, and one was made of gold and adorned with a horned animal image and gold bead, according to officials. All the jewelry dates from the Early Hellenistic Period. How Scientists Accidentally Turned Lead Into Gold Researcher Dr. Marion Zindel surmises that the rings and the rest of the jewelry were buried intentionally. "One of the possibilities now being examined is that the jewelry found in the building's foundations was in the context of executing a well-known Hellenistic period custom in which betrothed women would bury jewelry and other childhood objects in the house foundations as a symbol of the transition from childhood to adulthood," she said. Researchers also noted that the design of the jewelry may have been influenced by trade with faraway empires at the time. Specifically, jewelry that combines gold with brightly colored gemstones was a fashion influenced by Eastern countries, such as India and Persia. "These fashionable influences were enabled thanks to Alexander the Great's conquests, and the consequent trade channels opening with these regions," officials said. "When I held this ring in my hand, I felt part of my history," said Rivka lengler, excavator at the City of David. The 1,600-year-old mosaic intricately details scenes of hunting, exotic animals, mythological figures, fruit, and daily life within 55 medallions. Archaeologists have theorized that it was created by a master craftsman due to the small size of the stones, the variety of color, and incorporation of glass and pottery. The town was known for its location along an ancient trade route connecting the desert region to Gaza, which was a Mediterranean port city at the time. The mosaic was discovered within a monastery. A large wine press and warehouses filled with jars were also found, indicating that the monastic order may have made a living producing and selling wine. Further excavations were completed under Dan Gazit and Shayka Lander from the Israel Antiquities Authority, before the piece was covered for preservation. 'Over the years, the mosaic floor's state of preservation has deteriorated. Against this background, it was rediscovered, treated and strengthened, and moved from its original location to the council compound in Merhavim,' Ami Shahar, head of the Conservation Department at the Israel Antiquities Authority, said in a statement. 'Now, it is protected from agricultural and development work, and is finally being displayed to the public.'
