Gundogan scores twice as Man City hit six to progress
Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City thrashed United Arab Emirates side Al Ain to comfortably book a place in the last-16 of the Club World Cup.
Pep Guardiola's men backed up their opening game win over Wydad AC with a ruthless performance but will have to beat Juventus to top Group G and avoid a meeting with the winners of Real Madrid's group.

City took the lead after only eight minutes courtesy of Gundogan's fortuitous strike, sending an attempted chipped cross sailing over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, while the German delightfully dinked home in the second half.
In between, Claudio Echeverri curled in a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box on his first start and Josko Gvardiol sent a header against the post as City threatened to run riot in the opening half an hour.
City went 3-0 up before half-time courtesy of Erling Haaland's penalty after Ramy Rabia bundled over Manuel Akanji in the box - the referee awarding the spot-kick after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Oscar Bobb came off the bench to cut inside and fire in at the near post and fellow substitute Rayan Cherki scored his first goal for the club with a low, thumping drive late on.

Al Ain qualified for the competition after winning the 2024 Asian Champions League under ex-Argentina striker Hernan Crespo and are now led by former Watford boss Vladimir Ivic, but they were well beaten by their superior opponents.
What was the main talking point?
Though it was a balmy 31C in Atlanta at the local kick-off time of 9pm, the heat and humidity was not a factor as the match was played inside the incredible 71,000-capacity venue, which is enclosed and fitted with air-conditioning, and City coolly despatched the Arab opposition without issues.
City boss Guardiola named a fully-changed starting line-up from the opening game win over Wydad, handing full debuts to left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and midfielder Echeverri, while Bernardo Silva took the armband for the first time since being appointed club captain.
Which players stood out?
Both first-time starters did no harm to their prospects, especially attacking Algerian Ait-Nouri.

Signed from Wolves for £31m, he already looks accomplished down the left flank, with his darts inside and crosses into the box causing Al Ain all sorts of issues.
Argentine midfielder Echeverri was handed a surprise appearance ahead of Jack Grealish in the FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace last month and converted a delightful finish which will have caught the eye of boss Guardiola.
What next for these teams?
Manchester City face Serie A giants Juve in a huge European clash in Orlando on Thursday, while Al Ain and Wydad AC have both suffered two defeats apiece and are already out.

Ilkay Gundogan ‘thinks' he will stay at Manchester City this summer and has ‘several years' at highest level
Ilkay Gundogan believes he will be a Manchester City player come the end of the transfer window as he vowed to keep playing at the top level for several more years. The 34-year-old scored twice for Manchester City as they beat Al Ain 6-0 in their second Club World Cup group stage game, but there has been speculation linking him with a move away from the club in the last week. Advertisement He is into the final year of his contract, and Pep Guardiola has admitted he is looking to trim his squad, but the German international appeared confident that he would see out his contract. 'I think so, yes,' he said. 'I have a one-year contract. And I'm very happy here. I think everyone knows that. 'And I am committed to the competition. And I'm enjoying my football. I still believe that I have several years in me. To play on the highest level by taking good care of myself. 'I think I've proven that. Also in last season where I didn't miss a game. So I'm available. I'm fit. I feel really good. And I want to play on the highest level for much longer.' Gundogan spent seven years at City before joining Barcelona in 2023 but returned to the Etihad last summer. Guardiola is into his tenth season in charge and also only has a year remaining on his deal, but Gundogan enjoys the freshness of playing under him even after so long together. 'It's a big privilege. I mean, otherwise I would have not joined again,' he said. 'Otherwise I would have not spent so many years with him at this club. I think it's just something that he has, that he's able to do. To make players feel they have to compete on the highest level. They have to reach their best to be able to play in this team, first of all. 'But then also you know that every training session, every game is just a joy. If it turns out to be the way we want to play. That's why he's the best. That's why he has won so much, so many titles. 'That's why also probably all the players in the world would love to play for him. And the same reason is for me.'

'An incredible finisher' - practice makes perfect for Echeverri
Rayan Ait-Nouri and Claudio Echeverri both made their first starts for Manchester City in the Club World Cup [Reuters] Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gave full debuts to Rayan Ait-Nouri and Claudio Echeverri in Sunday's handsome victory at the Club World Cup - and both impressed. A 6-0 thrashing of UAE side Al-Ain sent City through to the last 16 with a game to spare, making it back-to-back clean sheets and eight goals scored. Advertisement City's struggles last season were partly down to a lengthy injury list and needing to deploy players in unfamiliar positions such as Nico O'Reilly at left-back, with the academy player more accustomed to playing in midfield. But the acquisition of impressive Algerian Ait-Nouri will provide more balance down the left and goalscorer Echeverri showed why he could be a decent squad option this season. Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, said of Echeverri: "He reminds me a bit of Julian Alvarez - same type of player, his finishing is incredible "He is a really good guy, a bit shy in the beginning but I think he can help us a lot." Advertisement Hardworking Echeverri City's latest Argentine star? City's affinity with attacking players from Argentina has seen some go down in the club's record books. Sergio Aguero provided the most memorable and dramatic moment of their first Premier League title success, Carlos Tevez famously moved to the club having previously played for rivals Manchester United, while Julian Alvarez's £81m transfer to Atletico Madrid is their most expensive sale. Guardiola may now have a future star on his hands in teenager Echeverri, who hails from the South American country that produced footballing greats Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona. Advertisement Echeverri signed for City in January 2024 but remained at River Plate on loan for another year and was given a surprise debut as a substitute in May's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace. The 19-year-old played only 45 minutes of City's rout on Sunday, but caught the eye with a sublime free-kick on his first start for the club. Guardiola said: "Since he arrived and [in] the three or four months with us, at the end of training sessions he was practising free-kicks with the goalkeeper, wall and alone. "The other ones did not practise. He was practising and practising and the work pays off. Advertisement "Fantastic goal and incredible player. He could not continue after half-time because of a problem with the ankle, but the free-kick was really good." Guardiola has made clear he wants to work with a smaller squad. The out-of-favour trio of Grealish, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips appear to have no futures at the club, while James McAtee was not selected for the trip. The Spaniard needs to further trim his playing personnel from the 27 that are currently in the United States, but Echeverri may have given his manager a headache about whether to keep him with the squad this season or sanction a loan move away. 'Intelligent' Ait-Nouri displays attacking impetus [BBC] City have been without a recognised left-back since the departure of Benjamin Mendy, but Guardiola seems to have found the perfect solution. Advertisement "Wow," said Guardiola of Ait-Nouri's performance. "He had to defend a back four, then make a back five. He played really, really good, not for the first time. "It was his first game but he has played in the Premier League for many years." Playing at the incredible Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ait-Nouri showcased the class he possesses with driving runs up and down the left flank. He played the full game and highlighted why he will be such an asset with a total of 92 touches of the ball, including seven in the opposition box, second only to Erling Haaland. The Norwegian, who scored from the penalty spot and missed numerous other chances, will be relishing getting on the end of some of Ait-Nouri's whipped crosses. Advertisement The 24-year-old could have scored in the first half when he cut inside and beat a couple of defenders, but lost his footing at the vital moment. Guardiola said: "He can help us play in that role outside but then had to play as a holding midfielder and go into the pockets. He moves really well into the spaces. "He is intelligent and clear to defend and take the ball. He is so clever in the final third, taking the right decisions to create more spaces. Really pleased for the game he played." His statistics while at Wolves show what he will add to this City side and why the £31m fee could turn out to be a bargain. Advertisement Last season, Ait-Nouri led the way for defenders with the most goal involvements (11) in the Premier League - in total he scored nine goals and provided 19 assists in five seasons at Molineux. His attacking capabilities are further enhanced by the fact only three other full-backs created more chances last term and only West Ham's Aaron Wan-Bissaka completed more dribbles than Ait Nouri's 63. Ait-Nouri helped ensure City progressed into the knockout stages and they will be aiming to seal top spot in their final group game against Juventus on Thursday.

The victory secured Manchester City's passage to the last-16 but Juventus have to be beaten if they are to top Group G and probably avoid Real Madrid in the first knockout round. Advertisement Gundogan said: 'At the end if you're not able to beat Juventus then they might deserve it [win the group]. A seventh goal would have given us a higher probability but it also doesn't matter: we need a good performance against Juve and to win the game. That is not going to change the way we approach it.' The German was unhappy at how City performed as the break neared. 'There were short periods where we were not that precise in terms of our passing and the way we played. 'It's something we need to observe and get better at because at the highest level you should not allow yourself to be not good for such a long time. It felt quite long to be honest. It felt at least five or 10 minutes too long in terms of the standards we have. 'Unfortunately, we didn't start the second half good enough [either]. We were a bit slow and it felt a bit that it cost us that one goal at the end that we needed.'
