Moreover, Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi described the talks on X as 'positive and constructive.'

The talks took place outside the Omani capital, Muscat, lasting over two hours. They began at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time and concluded at 5:50 p.m.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump advocated for direct negotiations, while Iranian officials insisted on maintaining indirect dialogue through intermediaries. He described the meetings as 'important' and reiterated his firm opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran.
Tensions remain high amid repeated threats by the US president to launch airstrikes against Iran's nuclear infrastructure should diplomacy fail. In response, Iranian officials have increasingly warned that Tehran may consider pursuing nuclear weapons, in case the US uses military power.

Iranian President invites Iraqi counterpart to Eid festival in Tehran

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian invited Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid to attend the Eid al-Adha* festival in Tehran, with both leaders reaffirming the strength of bilateral relations. According to Iranian media reports, the two presidents discussed the current state of ties between Tehran and Baghdad during a phone call. Pezeshkian emphasized the historical and cultural bonds shared by Iran and Iraq and reiterated his administration's commitment to unity with Muslim nations, including Iraq, to safeguard the dignity of Islamic countries. President Rashid, for his part, affirmed that the Iraqi government is prepared to enhance coordination and cooperation with Tehran for the mutual benefit and sustainable development of both countries. At the end of the call, Rashid asked Pezeshkian to convey his regards to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. *Eid al-Adha, known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is an Islamic holiday commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, it coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The festival involves special prayers and the ritual sacrifice of an animal—usually a sheep, goat, or cow—with the meat shared among family, friends, and those in need.

Leader Barzani: Baghdad's unjust decree clouding our celebrations

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said the Kurdistan Region will mark Eid al-Adha without salaries for its employees due to what he described as an "unjust and unfair" decision by authorities in Baghdad. In a statement issued on the occasion of the Muslim holiday, Barzani extended warm congratulations to Muslims in Kurdistan, Iraq, and around the world, offering particular greetings to "the families of the righteous martyrs, heroic Peshmerga fighters, and the dear citizens of Kurdistan." He likened the salary cuts and what he called a policy of mass starvation against the Kurdish people to the Anfal campaigns, chemical bombardments, and acts of genocide committed by the former regime against the Kurds. Barzani continued, 'The will of the Kurdish people is stronger and higher than any injustice, crime, or Anfal campaign,' Urging those who oppose the Kurdistan Region and its people to 'look to history and draw lessons from it.' He emphasized that 'the people of Kurdistan have resisted with resilience and courage against all forms of oppression and tyranny, achieved victory over aggressors and criminals, and left regret to the oppressors.' The Kurdish leader expressed deep gratitude and appreciation for 'the resilience, steadfastness, and dignity of every individual from the people of Kurdistan,' and voiced hope that 'God bestows goodness and reassurance upon Kurdistan and Iraq, and peace and stability upon the region and the world."

Iraq fast-tracks Chinese-led gas project to curb energy imports

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has reached an agreement with a Chinese energy firm to accelerate the development of the al-Mansouriya gas field in Diyala province—part of efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuel, a member of Iraq's Parliamentary Finance Committee revealed on Thursday. MP Mudar al-Karawi told Shafaq News Agency that the ministry has signed a revised deal with China's Jereh Group and state-owned PetroIraq to shorten the project timeline from 42 months to just 20 months. 'The first phase will produce 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (Mscfd), gradually increasing to 300 Mscfd,' al-Karawi explained. Located in eastern Iraq near the Iranian border, the al-Mansouriya gas field is expected to play a vital role in fueling domestic power stations and trimming costly natural gas imports. Iraq currently imports gas from Iran to run much of its electricity sector. 'The locally produced gas will help reduce dependence on imported supplies and save Iraq millions of dollars annually,' al-Karawi noted. The development is part of a wider national strategy announced by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani last October. The minister unveiled multiple gas and oil deals, including complementary licensing rounds, expected to boost production by over 850 Mscfd and 750,000 barrels of oil per day. The original contract for al-Mansouriya was signed on October 31, 2024, under the supervision of the Oil Ministry, targeting a full production capacity of 300 Mscfd. According to data from Global Fire Power, Iraq consumed over 19 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2025, ranking 38th globally. The country's fast-growing energy demands continue to strain its power infrastructure, especially during peak summer months.
