Ingebrigtsen launches own running team with brothers and Norwegian athletes
Two-times Olympic champion and distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen launched his own running team called the Spring Run Club on Wednesday, along with his brothers and two Norwegian athletes.
Norwegian runner Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal, cross-country skier Marthe Kristoffersen, and Ingebrigtsen's elder brothers Filip and Henrik, also middle distance runners, are part of the team.
The brothers said the club will be open to anyone interested in learning more about running, regardless of their experience or their skill level, while athletes will also share their insights, tips and training sessions.
"We want to share our knowledge and help grow a global running movement, for everyone that loves running," Jakob Ingebrigtsen said in a statement.
"As professional runners, we have received great support from both the federation at the top level and local clubs at the grassroots level. We want to continue collaborating with all of them.
"But what has been missing is a global community fully dedicated to the craft and science of running. That's what we're building now."
The team will also partner with Norwegian omega-3 producer Smartfish Sports Nutrition AS.
"The Ingebrigtsen brothers and Spring Run Club are now shareholders in the company, which has committed to investing a minimum of NOK 30 million ($2.97 million)... over time in operational funding to support the development of the running team," they said in a statement.
Smartfish is also set to become one of the leading partners of the new running team.
Ingebrigtsen has been a key figure in a trial involving his father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, after Norwegian police pressed charges last year accusing him of abusing two of his seven children, including Jakob.
Norwegian prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Gjert, who is accused of abusing his son Jakob and daughter Ingrid, with a verdict expected this month. REUTERS

Sanchez ally quits Spain's ruling Socialist Party over corruption claims
MADRID - A senior official in Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialist Party quit his congressional and party posts over corruption allegations on Thursday, posing one of the biggest threats yet to the survival of Spain's fragile coalition government. Santos Cerdan, a lawmaker and number three in the Socialist Party (PSOE) hierarchy as organisational secretary, resigned after a Spanish Supreme Court judge on Thursday invited him to testify on June 25. In a statement, Cerdan said he was resigning to dedicate his time to defending his innocence. "I've never committed any crime nor have I been complicit in one," he said. "I reiterate my innocence and trust that it will become clear after my testimony (in court)." Sanchez's office said he would hold a press conference at 5.15 p.m. (1515 GMT) Judge Leopoldo Puente, who unsealed the case on Thursday, said there was "strong evidence" of Cerdan's possible involvement in the "improper awarding" of public works contracts in exchange for a price, according to a court document seen by Reuters. Such acts constitute crimes of criminal organisation and bribery, which can carry prison sentences of as much as eight years. In a report sent to the judge seen by Reuters, police provided transcripts of recordings of Cerdan discussing suspected kickbacks with former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos. Cerdan "appeared to be the person in charge of taking those alleged payments," the police wrote in the report. Earlier on Thursday, Cerdan said he had no recollection of the conversation. 'RESIGN, RESIGN' During a rowdy parliamentary session on Thursday, opposition lawmakers had chanted "resign, resign". With various scandals swirling around his government, Sanchez's opponents have highlighted that he hasn't taken questions from the media since the day after the blackout that affected Spain in April. "We demand from the Socialist Party explanations, resignations and elections. Today's the day, no excuses," Miguel Tellado, parliamentary spokesperson for the conservative People's Party said. Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, from the PSOE's junior coalition partner Sumar, demanded "explanations and clarifications". The judge also called for questioning Abalos and his former assistant Koldo Garcia, who was arrested last year on suspicion of taking payments to facilitate contracts for masks during the COVID pandemic. Abalos, transport minister between 2018 and 2021, last year refused to step down as a PSOE lawmaker following Garcia's arrest and said he'd sit instead with a mixed parliamentary group of independents and small parties. Spaun emerged as the surprise early first-round U.S. Open leader on Thursday at Oakmont Country Club where Rory McIlroy was two shots back, defending champion Bryson DeChambeau opened with a bogey and Scottie Scheffler had yet to start. Spaun, who started on the back nine and completed 11 holes on the notoriously challenging Oakmont layout, was four under on the day without a bogey on his card and sat one shot clear of 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland (through eight holes). McIlroy reached the turn bogey-free at two under and was part of a five-player group who were in a share of third place while DeChambeau was a further two shots adrift. Much of the talk ahead of the U.S. Open was how Oakmont, with penal rough framing narrow fairways that lead to slick greens, would keep scores in check, and while many players struggled there was more red on the leaderboard than expected. McIlroy picked up his first stroke at his second hole, the par-four 11th, where he walked in a 27-foot birdie moments after getting a good read on the putt from playing partner Justin Rose, who missed his attempt to the left. The Northern Irishman followed that with his longest drive of the season, a monstrous 392-yard strike down the 12th fairway that got a helping hand by a generous bounce en route to a birdie that gave him a share of the early lead. McIlroy followed that with a string of six pars. DeChambeau got his title defence off to a shaky start with a bogey, got back to even par with a birdie at the fifth, moved into red figures with a birdie at the seventh where his approach shot settled six feet from the cup and then bogeyed the ninth. Australian Adam Scott, whose 96th consecutive major start this week is the longest streak among active players, was two under through his first 10 holes and part of the group in a share of third place. Tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler, who counts the PGA Championship among his three wins in his last four starts, will head out at 1:25 p.m. ET alongside two-times major winner Collin Morikawa and world number 14 Viktor Hovland.
