‘There Was No Time to Be Nervous,' Says Montana Mushroom Hunter Who Shot Charging Grizzly
Justin Lee likes a good steak. And what completes a good steak, in Lee's opinion, is fresh-picked morels. On Wednesday, during his first foraging outting of the spring, Lee and his brother-in-law were looking for morel mushrooms on Lee's property north of Choteau, Montana. They were charged by a grizzly sow, and they shot and killed the bear at close range.
'There was no time to be nervous,' Lee tells Outdoor Life in an exclusive phone interview six days after he was charged. 'No time for calculation whatsoever.'
Lee explains that he and his brother-in-law, John Long, had gone out walking on his property the evening of May 21. They drove his side-by-side down to Spring Creek, thinking it was a good spot to look for morels. Both men are from the area, and they know how to hike in grizzly country. They each carried sidearms: Lee had his 10mm Glock, and Long carried his 1911 chambered in .45 ACP.
'We weren't hunting bear,' says Lee, a 53-year-old retired attorney. 'We just carry these guns when we're down there in case. It just happened to be the 'in case' day that day.'
After parking their rig in the cottonwoods near the creek, they started searching for mushrooms on foot. Lee walked toward the water. Long went about 50 yards ahead of him but returned quickly.
'He came running back saying, 'There's a bear. There's a bear.' Then I saw the bear and she had a cub. We started yelling and jumping up and down trying to scare her off. She just kept coming our way. Not charging but coming.'
Lee says he suspects the sow was curious and trying to figure out what the ruckus was about. After closing the distance from 100 to 50 yards, the sow stood up on its hind legs, sniffing the air.

'She got our wind — she scented us,' Lee says. 'Then she got down on all fours and started jogging toward us instead of away from us. At 30 yards, she put her ears back and she was charging, so we started shooting.'
It took eight bullets to put the sow down. Lee fired three rounds; Long shot five. They called a local game warden immediately to report the incident.
Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks investigated the shooting and ruled it a case of self-defense. Wildlife officials tried searching for the cub but couldn't find it. They also removed the grizzly carcass from Lee's property, which is marked with 'Be Bear Aware' signs.
'They were very good,' Lee says. 'I'm sorry to have to kill a bear, especially a female with a cub. But there wasn't a choice. I've seen many bears and [have] been close to many bears. In all my encounters, they see me and they run away. But [this bear] just wasn't afraid of humans.'
A few hours later, Lee was at the local bar. It was poker night. He played a few hands, carried on, and went home. It wasn't until he climbed into bed that the events of the day caught up with him.
'I was lying in bed when it finally dawned on me what had happened. I was a little restless. I don't have any desire to kill a grizzly, but I wish I had [been able to keep] a grizzly claw. You just can't believe them until you see them.'

Lee has a few cabins on his mostly undeveloped property near Choteau, which lies in Central Montana along the Rocky Mountain Front and southeast of Glacier National Park. The area falls within the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, which is home to more than 1,000 grizzly bears and has seen an uptick in the number of grizzly conflicts in recent years. In April, a shed hunter shot and killed a charging grizzly bear near Dupuyer, which lies roughly 30 miles north of Choteau.
'It doesn't change the way I behave, but it makes me wonder about having guests,' Lee says. 'The grizzly bear recovery program in North-Central Montana has been wildly successful. When I was a kid, they were rare and in the mountains. It was a really big deal to see them. Over the years, it's become less odd. Now it's just standard.'

Early voting turnout for South Korean president hits 34.74%
May 31 (UPI) -- With three days until the presidential election in South Korea, the candidates are making their final push to replace impeached President Yoon Sook-yeol with more than a third already casting their votes. The two days of early voting ended at 6 p.m. Friday. Of the 44.3 million eligible South Korean voters, 34.74% have voted, according to the National Election Commission. This is the second highest turnout since nationwide early voting was introduced in 2014, according to the NEC. It was 36.93% for the 2022 presidential election. Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung and People Power Party candidate Kim Moon-soo encouraged people to go to the polls early. In the latest poll, Lee led with 42.9% support followed by Kim with 36.8%, according to Yonhap. Lee Jun-seo, of the minor conservative New Reform Party, came in third with 10.3%. "The morale at the Democratic Camp is much more energetic, especially after the historic impeachment trial," David Lee, a Seoul-based journalist, told Al Jazeera. "PPP supporters, on the other hand, are navigating murkier waters." South Korean police said this week they had apprehended at least 690 people over related incidents, according to Yonhap. Lee attended a rally in Pyeongtaek, around 37 miles south of Seoul, on Saturday. Lee said he has been wearing a bulletproof vest and installed bulletproof glass at campaign rallies after threats on his life. He called alleged opinion rigging by a far-right group as an "act of rebellion" that must be held accountable. "How can they be manipulating comments, making fake news in this day and age, and systematically making preparations to ruin the election results," he asked. "Can this be forgiven? We must root it out." On Friday, Lee visited Chuncheon and Wonju in Gangwon Province before heading to Chungju in North Chungcheong Province for his campaign rallies. This marks his first visit to Gangwon during the campaign period. Kim launched a 90-hour nonstop overnight campaign tour across the country. Kim, during a rally in the eastern Gangwon Province, called for the "banishing" Lee from politics. "Lee has been found guilty of lying," he said. "What would happen [to the country] if he becomes president?" Kim said he would be a "clean" president if elected. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court sent Lee's case back to the Seoul High Court for a retrial. They decided the lower court's decision to acquit Lee of false statements during the previous presidential race in 2021. Lee, appearing on cable broadcaster JTBC's YouTube channel, called for a special counsel probe to fully hold accountable those involved in Yoon's martial law bid. "To bring the insurrection to a complete end, all those responsible or complicit must be identified and held accountable," he said.

Haig Road Kolo Mee Showdown: Lin Yu Mei vs Lee Kolo Mee
Finally, my first of the Food Showdown series, featuring none other than Haig Road kolo mee. Kolo mee is a dry noodle dish from Sarawak, denoted by its light but fragrant, springy egg noodles, often topped with minced pork and char siew slices. I had my first bowl of kolo mee in Sabah as a kid, and it's been one of my favourite noodle dishes since. With that, meet our 2 contenders for the Haig Road Market & Food Centre kolo mee showdown: Sarawak Kolo Mee • Laksa 李 砂朥越哥羅麵 • 叻沙 (Lee) (right) and 林玉梅 Sarawak Laksa & Kolo Mee () (left). Both are run by elderly couples! The latter has long already made a name for itself as one of Singapore's best, while the former, though more obscure, has seen some pretty good reviews too! Both stalls offer Kolo Mee in white and red versions, with Lin Yu Mei offering the black one on top of that. But for simplicity's sake, I ordered the Dry (White) from both stalls. Similarly, both stalls offer 2 serving sizes of their Kolo Mee. Lee's Kolo Mee is recognisable by its orange crockery, and is sold in 2 sizes at S$4/S$5. Meanwhile, Lin Yu Mei's standout red bowls are priced just a tad bit more at S$4.50/S$5.50. I opted for the smaller bowl from both stalls. Overall, they carried a similar array of standard kolo mee ingredients. However, Lee's had a handful of leafy veg, while Lin Mei Yu's was topped with a meagre few pieces of fried pork lard, as well as a slightly heftier portion of noodles. Let's get down to the real Haig Road kolo mee showdown. But before that, my dining companion and I fed each bowl 2 spoonfuls of their respective soups so we could toss the noodles easily. Lee: Each strand of noodle retained its QQ-ness even after being left out for a while (sorry, the phone had to eat first), a quality I highly regard when it comes to kolo mee. It was lightly tossed in a mix of minced meat and shallot oil, but was still relatively drier in comparison to the next one. Lin Mei Yu: On first look, these noodles are relatively lighter in colour, but you should never judge a book by its cover! The taste of shallot oil was more prominent, evenly coating the noodles. Combined with the juices of the crispy pork lard, there was a richer depth to the noodles I just couldn't get enough of. A notable difference was that these were texturally softer than the former, likely because more oil was incorporated. The noodles were more clumped together, though they still retained a slight bounce. Noodle Showdown: Chun Fu Fishball Minced Meat Noodle Laksa vs Fa Ji Minced Meat Fishball Noodle Lee: The minced pork that crowns this dish unfortunately did not feel deserving of it. It was rather bland to me, and I wished there was more seasoning aside from the pinch of salt. In a similar vein, the char siew was nothing to shout about. We were served relatively fatty slices but because they weren't tender enough, we were left to tirelessly chew on the tough fats. Its saving grace was that the edges had a sweet, slightly charred flavour which balanced out the savoury bowl well. Lin Yu Mei: The minced pork came in slightly bigger fragments, allowing a burst of meaty juice to ooze out when I stuffed a spoonful of it into my mouth. The juices elevated the taste of the noodles, for sure. 'It looks like an eraser', my dining companion joked. Happy to inform that it doesn't taste like one, although it did feel slightly dry and rubbery in my mouth. They are apparently boiled instead of roasted, and hence lack that smoky aroma that usually accompanies it. Lesson learnt: Never question the amount of chilli added. Though small in portion, both packed an unexpected fire to them. Lee: Theirs was pungent, carrying a peppery spice that when paired with the noodles and really elevated the dish. This was my main companion in getting through the underwhelming meats. Lin Yu Mei: 'OMG, spicy sia!', I exclaimed, bug-eyed, to my dining companion sitting opposite me. Even the slightest bit of chilli padi sent a kick straight to the back of my throat. Spice lovers will love this one. To be very frank, neither bowl was outstanding to me. I suppose I can't compare them to the authentic ones I've had in Malaysia, but I would say both stalls still make for a decent kolo mee fix if I happen to be craving it. The star of both bowls was undeniably the noodles, while the char siew fell short. With that being said, I crown the crowd favourite 林玉梅 Sarawak Laksa & Kolo Mee (Lin Yu Mei) the winner of this Haig Road kolo mee showdown! The fragrant oil that clung to each strand of curly noodles was truly addictive, and I preferred the balance of this dish. Although, I wouldn't hesitate to get a bowl from Lee's if there's a queue at Lin Yu Mei. Hmm… should I do a Sarawak laksa showdown next? What we know about reports Nancy Mace ordered staffers to create burner accounts to promote her online.
In late May 2025, a rumor spread online that U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, ordered her staffers to create burner accounts on social media to promote her. (A burner account is a social media account created "for the purpose of remaining anonymous.") Claims spread on X, Facebook, Bluesky and Reddit. While some posts presented the claim as an allegation, others presented it as fact. The rumor appeared to originate with reporting from Wired, a reputable tech magazine, which ran a story on May 28 titled, "Nancy Mace's Former Staff Claim She Had Them Create Burner Accounts to Promote Her." The keyword here is claim: The Wired story does not present the statement that Mace ordered her staffers to create burner accounts as 100% factual, instead treating it as an allegation made by anonymous former staff members. Similarly, Snopes cannot put a fact-check rating on this story because there is not enough verifiable public evidence definitively proving or disproving the claim. With that said, here is what we do know about the allegations. Wired's story, written by senior politics writer Jake Lahut, relies on anonymous sources identified as former Mace staffers. These sources requested anonymity "because they fear reprisal from their former boss," per Lahut's article. Snopes could not, as of this writing, independently verify the legitimacy of Lahut's sources; Lahut said via a polite email that he could not make any promises about helping Snopes with its verification process in the immediate future due to his own workload. Here are the claims as presented in the Wired story: A principal—and unusual—use to which Mace put her skills, according to former staffers, was setting up burner accounts on a variety of social media platforms to monitor what people were saying about her and bolster her image. They also claim she requested that staffers make their own burner accounts to defend her online. "We had to make multiple accounts, burner accounts, and go and reply to comments, saying things that weren't true—even Reddit forums," a former staffer says. "We were congressional staff, and there were actual things we could be doing to help the constituents." Mace's communications director, Sydney Long, disputed the allegations. "Nancy Mace's Communications Director here, can confidently say I've never been asked to make a burner account," Long wrote in a May 28 X post. "This isn't the hit y'all think it is." In an email to Snopes, Long wrote, "I would give you an additional comment but we're too busy creating burner accounts, according to former staff. (sarcasm)." "As Congresswoman Mace's Communications Director, I can say with complete confidence: I've never been asked to create a burner account, and the suggestion is laughable," Long's email continued. Long did not provide Mace's reaction to the story, but Mace appeared to acknowledge the Wired story in a May 29 X post, in which she said: "Comment your burner account below." One popular post on Facebook claimed that Mace's former staff "said under oath" they had to create burner accounts to promote Mace. That's a misunderstanding of Wired's reporting, which instead described an April 28 deposition of a former consultant for Mace, Wesley Donehue, who reportedly said under oath that Mace sets up her own burner accounts and bots on social media. The deposition makes no mention of Mace ordering staff to set up burner accounts or bots. As for the legitimacy of the deposition in question: While it does not seem to appear in Charleston's court case search system, a document available in the system mentions the deposition on Page 7, suggesting it is legitimate. Lawyers named in the deposition did not immediately return a request to verify its authenticity. Here is the relevant portion of Donehue's statement on Page 10 — or Page 40, if you're using the page numbers of the original document instead of the PDF — first published by conservative South Carolina news outlet FITSNews on May 21 (emphasis ours): Nancy Mace is quite the -- when I use the word "nerd" or "geek," it's always favorable, but a computer nerd or a computer geek. She programs her own bots, she sets up Twitter burner accounts. This is kind of a thing she does. She sits all night on the couch and programs bots, because she's very, very computer savvy. She controls her own voter database, she programs a lot of her own website, she programs Facebook bots and Instagram bots and Twitter bots. It's what she does for fun. Lawyers representing Mace's former fiance, Patrick Bryant, deposed Donehue after South Carolina law enforcement reportedly interviewed him in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation into sexual assault allegations made by Mace against Bryant. (Bryant has repeatedly denied these allegations.) While Donehue publicly disparaged Mace and said that he fired her as a client, FITSNews reported that Donehue initially refused to give a statement.
