Angry locals cause chaos for American billionaire Jeff Bezos' lavish Venice wedding
Angry Italians who have been protesting against Jeff Bezos getting married in Venice are said to have finally forced the American billionaire to move a party that was planned in the middle of the city.
Bezos, 61, is expected to marry former news anchor Lauren Sanchez, 55, in a lavish wedding in the historic Italian destination this week with three days of celebrations and a star-studded guest list of about 200 people.
But Bezos, one of the world's richest people, has not been welcomed with open arms.
A large banner reading 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax' was put up in St. Mark Square and 'No space for Bezos' posters and stickers have been slapped on buildings throughout the city.
The couple have now cancelled their party at a 16th-century hall in the centre of Venice and moved the event to a more secure location after protesters threatened to stop guests arriving by filling the canals with inflatable crocodiles, according to British newspaper The Times.
'Bezos is on the run — this is a crazy victory for a small group of people with no money who went up against one of the richest men on the planet,' protester Tommaso Cacciari told the publication.
It's not the only venue change that could happen last minute.
A Venetian insider told Page Six that Bezos had booked several venues across a range of dates to keep their options open.
'The strategy serves both to mislead paparazzi and protesters, and to ensure contingency plans in the event of last-minute logistical setbacks,' they said.
The ceremony is in a secret location but rumours say it may take place at the historic Church of the Abbey of Misericordia, or at the Arsenale, a vast shipyard complex dating back to when the city was a naval powerhouse.
The couple's Sicilian wedding planner Lanza & Baucina said they have been instructed to minimise any disruption to the city.
Venice's tourism city councillor, Simone Venturini, denied the wedding would disrupt daily life, telling AFP it was just 'one of many events that the city hosts on a daily basis'.
'It is also relatively small in terms of the number of people involved,' Ms Venturini said.
Celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and Orlando Bloom are expected to fly into the city for the wedding.
At least 95 private planes have requested permission to land at Venice's Marco Polo airport, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera said.
Bezos' mega-yacht, Koru, is likely to moor off the iconic San Giorgio Maggiore island, which sits just opposite St Mark's Square and has reportedly been booked in its entirety for the period.
As environmentalists questioned the guests' carbon footprint, Greenpeace slammed billions spent on hedonistic partying while the fragile city is 'sinking under the weight of the climate crisis'.
Sanchez has also been criticised for saying more must be done to tackle climate change while also taking part in a space flight in April on a rocket developed by Bezos' space company Blue Origin.
People close to the couple told Associated Press that they are sourcing about 80 per cent of their wedding goods from Venetian vendors, and there have been various reports of 'sizeable' donations to charities.
That includes a million euro donation ($A1,789,000) for Corila, which manages research activities on the Venice Lagoon, and making other donations in honour of their guests in lieu of gifts.
Tourism management is a contentious topic in the holiday hotspot.
While Venice's economy relies heavily on tourism, some frustrated local residents feel foreigners are using their city as a playground while they are being pushed out through lack of affordable housing and job opportunities outside of tourism.
It is one of many popular destinations across the world desperately trying to find new ways to cope with a massive boom in tourism post-Covid and avoid the trend dubbed 'overtourism'.
Venice has doubled its entry free for day-trippers this season and expanded the days it applies to.
The fee, first introduced a year ago, was 5 euros ($9) and is now 10 euros ($18) for any visitors who don't book more than four days in advance.
Also among new rules last year, megaphones and tour groups over 25 people were banned.
Bezos is not the first big name to get married in Venice. George and Amal Clooney wed there in 2014.

Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner's $2 billion move after White House exit
Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, are set to invest a staggering $US1.4 billion ($A2.1 billion) into turning an abandoned Soviet weapons base into a luxury island resort. Ivanka, 43, and Kushner, 44, have spent the past year working on plans to transform the Albanian island of Sazan — one of the last undeveloped islands in the Mediterranean — into a must-visit destination for the wealthy and privileged, Realtor reports. The couple, who both served as senior advisers in US President Donald Trump's first administration but opted not to rejoin his cabinet after his 2024 election win, took a massive step toward their dream of creating the 'extraordinary' retreat in January, when their plans received preliminary approval from the Albanian government, according to the New York Times. That approval came just two months after Ivanka's father claimed victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, and days before he was inaugurated for the second time. The outlet noted that the project is 'one of several' involving members of the president's family and foreign government entities that Trump will be actively working with in the White House. Both Kushner and a spokesman for the Albanian government had previously shut down any suggestion the project's evaluation process would be influenced by its direct connection to Trump — however, that hasn't stopped questions from being raised over the approval. 'The fact that such a renowned American entrepreneur shows his interest on investing in Albania makes us very proud and happy,' a representative of Albanian President Edi Rama told the Times in 2024. Even before the couple had received approval for their plans, locals were abuzz with speculation about the project, with many now referring to the island as 'Ishulli i Trumpëve,' which translates to 'Trump Island.' Both Ivanka and Kushner have close ties to the real estate industry via their respective families. Before President Trump launched himself into politics, he was best known for his career as a developer, while Kushner's family owns a vast portfolio of commercial, residential, and retail properties in and around New York. However, this project marks the first time the couple will venture into the heady world of luxury hotels — with multiple reports noting they face a steep uphill battle before the resort will be ready for visitors. Having conquered the first hurdle — receiving approval from the government to forge ahead with their plans — the duo will now have to tackle the remnants of the island's somewhat dark past as a Soviet-era storage facility for chemical weapons. According to Italian journalist Marzio Mian, who visited the island in July 2024, shortly after Ivanka and Kushner's plans for the 1400-acre land were revealed, it is littered with 'signs depicting skull and crossbones, warning of landmines,' with visitors to the area warned not to venture too far off specific paths out of fears that they could stumble across an unexploded ordnance. Plans to remove the remaining weapons and ammunition on the island are well underway, however, with the Albanian government announcing in July 2020 that members of the country's armed forces had been dispatched to Sazan in order to begin clearing it of any dangerous ordnance. After Ivanka and Kushner's plans for their resort received preliminary approval, the Albanian government confirmed it would work with them in order to continue clearing their development site of all unexploded and buried weapons. As for the crumbling military buildings and 3600 derelict bunkers that were abandoned on the island, the couple is reportedly planning to incorporate at least a few of them into their hotel plans. Ivanka revealed in a 2024 podcast interview they were working with the 'best architects and the best brands' to make the resort into an 'extraordinary' property. Despite the remnants of the island's dark past as a Communist military base, tourists began flocking to its dazzling beaches as early as 2017, when it was reopened to the public after being closed for years. According to Lonely Planet, the island is easily accessible by regular ferries from Vlore, one of Albania's most popular — and luxurious — tourist destinations, a reputation that Ivanka and Kushner will undoubtedly be keen to transfer to their own high-end hotel. 'Once used as a submarine and chemical-weapons base by the Soviet Union during the Cold War, it's now home to an Albanian-Italian military base used to combat narcotics smuggling,' Lonely Planet states. 'In the summer of 2017, a small area of the island opened to visitors, making parts of its pristine coastline and historic relics accessible for the first time.' President Rama made no secret of his excitement about the Trump-Kushner development. He told The Guardian he believes Albania 'can't afford not to exploit a gift like Sazan' and added: 'We need luxury tourism like a desert needs water'. To that end, the government is even in the process of building an airport near Vlore to ferry wealthy tourists directly to the country's most affluent and desirable area — an airport that would also serve as an easy access point for Ivanka and Kushner's hotel. However, not everyone is thrilled about the project, with some critics accusing the Albanian government of a lack of transparency about the deal with the couple, according to the Times. One, Agron Shehaj, who is a member of the opposition party in the Albanian government, told the outlet: 'Of course for Albania, which is a poor country, it is important to develop tourism. 'But there has been a lack of transparency here, and it makes it look like this is a private deal that is in the political interest of the prime minister of Albania.' Others raised concerns about the impact the development will have on the island's thriving wildlife. Freelance tour guide Arben Kola, who told The Independent: 'The way tourism works for Sazan at the moment is it helps to preserve nature, not damage it. We shouldn't change that'. Though Kushner has not commented on the recent reports about his proposed tourism mecca, he told The Guardian in 2024 that their plans would carefully consider Sazan's natural environment — stating: 'When people announce a development, everyone gets scared. 'Everybody assumes the worst. But once they see the plans we have, the way we're designing it, the way we're being faithful and considerate of the environment around us, I think that people will be very, very pleased. 'And again, with developments, you never make everyone happy.' It is unclear when work on the resort will begin — with documents pertaining to the preliminary government approval noting officials had the right to revoke the decision pending further negotiations. New sign Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are ‘over'
Split rumours have intensified around Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, with reports he is set to fly solo this weekend at the wedding of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. According to TMZ, Bloom and the pop star are all but over and the actor will 'make his debut as a single man' during the high-profile festivities in Venice, Italy. 'He's the life of the party and he's gonna hit the dance floor hard!' a source told the outlet, adding that the Pirates of the Caribbean star might even 'sneak away' with Leonardo DiCaprio for 'some bar crawling'. '90 per cent of the people at the wedding are kinda boring, but 10 per cent are really fun, including Orlando, Leo and Jeff. It's gonna be a great party,' the source said. The Daily Mail reports that Perry – who is currently on the Australian leg of her Lifetimes world tour – is not happy with her long-term partner attending the wedding without her because Bezos and Sánchez are 'her friends more than his'. 'Yet he's the one going to the wedding,' a source told the masthead. 'He's insistent that he goes, which annoys her because he's not particular close to either of them. She feels like it's a 'f**k you' to her from him.' Perry will play four concerts in Adelaide in the coming days, finishing the Australian leg of her tour on Monday. It's understood that the couple were already at odds over Perry's recent all-female space mission – which was funded by Bezos and included his bride-to-be Sánchez – with Bloom calling it 'cringe-worthy' and 'embarrassing' during an explosive fight with the pop star. 'He complains about her going to space, and then wants to go to the wedding of the people who made it possible for her to do this in the first place,' the source added. 'That's difficult for her to accept. They're already spiralling and now the wedding is another thing that they have to fight about.' With whispers of a split growing louder, Bloom made his way down to Australia earlier this week for what appeared to be a last-ditch effort to save their 9-year relationship. However, during his visit to Perth – where Perry performed two shows at RAC Arena – the couple were not seen together in public. Instead, Bloom was spotted out and about with their 4-year-old daughter, Daisy, on Sunday. The following day, there was also no sign of Bloom as Perry went on a private boat ride with her dancers to enjoy the sights of Perth from the water. Their daughter was seen on board. According to the Daily Mail, the couple's issues go 'deeper' than Bloom wanting to soft-launch his apparent single status at Bezos' wedding. 'Katy has not been the same person for over a year now and Orlando has had enough,' the source said. 'He advised her against space. She did it. He advised her against this tour and she did it. From where Orlando stands, all he ever wanted was for Katy to be herself.' 'He fell in love with her and who she is inside but this past year, he believes, has brought out the worst in her. He wants her to be happy and he wants her to be authentic. He just wants her to stop and enjoy the life that she has built.'
