Review: The Company of Violent Men by Siddharthya Roy

For a book about contemporary journalism, Siddharthya Roy's The Company of Violent Men has an aptly clickbaity title. The violent men rarely materialise — instead, there is a succession of bloviating men. They initially harbour a suggestion of violence or grand conspiracies, but later turn out to be empty vessels with noisy promises.
However, in a world full of enticing baubles, clickbait can be useful. Roy's book might rarely feature violent men, but it does tell us a lot about the men whom prevailing narratives or journalists eager to concoct a story might arbitrarily deem violent. In its pages, we meet refugees, small-time wheeler-dealers, and civilians going about their lives amid a vortex of conflict or dispossession.
The book is also an intriguing account of what is behind-the-scenes in journalism. The author pursues stories that often start with a promising lead, but eventually fizzle into a non-newsworthy morass or languish in dead ends. They might not have seen the light of publication earlier, but Roy has now repurposed them into a book. He writes, 'For the longest time in my head, it [the book] was called The Rejects — meaning that which was rejected from my stories at the edit table.'
In the first chapter, he talks about stumbling upon what seems like a breakthrough after the 2016 terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He used his programming chops to scrape social media posts that criticised the Bangladeshi government's actions against Islamists. Then, he geolocated the posts and traced many back to a 'nameless unfinished mosque' in Dhaka.
Roy travelled from New York to Dhaka, pretended to be a Bengali-American Muslim, and took on the alias Yasin to investigate further. 20 pages later, however, all we learn is that the people who ran the mosque 'weren't terrorist material'. The section ends with no new insights regarding the bakery attack.
A meeting with a professor in Dhaka, however, leads him to his next story. Its peg is a cricket match in a town he describes thus: '...in 2004, Bagmara slid from being the dream project of secular progressivism to the seat of the first-ever caliphate declared by an Al-Qaeda-affiliate terrorist group in South Asia'. He visited Bagmara about a decade after the government killed the man who set up the Caliphate. Roy documents the terror he unleashed and the attempts to undo his legacy of extremism in the essay Cricket in the Caliphate.
It sifts through people's testimonies of violence to highlight realpolitik in Bangladesh and the suffering it has engendered. Through a story from the grassroots, Roy exemplifies a global trend. As he describes it: 'States create and unleash a monster, let it run amok, and then clamp down on the civil rights of regular citizens, citing the monster.'
Later in the book, the author goes 'jihadi hunting in Germany'. There, he meets a man claiming to be Saddam Hussein's former bodyguard, who turns out to be 'the most blatant and unashamed liar'. Towards the book's end, there are whiffs of violence. A meeting with sources in a desolate location in Cox's Bazar seems like it might go south, but his driver rescues him before anything untoward happens. In a disturbing turn of events, he and his family faced death threats for his story on sexual assaults by militants in Kashmir.
In many of these narratives, we often learn more about Roy's work than the place he is in or its inhabitants. In others, however, people take centre stage, such as during his interviews with refugee Rohingya women who became sex workers in Bangladesh. With these stories, his purported goal is to 'un-trope' people that 'news headlines have flattened into convenient tropes of good and evil and us and them' and 'bring them back to life as real, living, breathing humans'.
Unfortunately, the author also succumbs to reductive platitudes at times, as is evident in formulations like 'when I looked beyond the burqa and the beard'. In the essay Maach, Meth and Metalhead Sharia, Roy is shocked that Hasan, a 'neophyte wannabe jihadist' he met in Cox's Bazar, is also a cannabis-smoking metalhead and might be gay. He later acknowledges that people can encompass multitudes, but does not explain why he labels Hassan a jihadist in the first place.
One suspects that Hassan has been, in the author's words, 'flattened into convenient tropes' because he went to a madrasa that might have harboured 'extremists' (We don't know for sure because Roy had to abandon the investigation). The use of jihadist and extremist as catch-all terms for diverse beliefs and actions, accompanied by a lack of context and nuance, has unfortunately been one of the hallmarks of global journalism for a couple of decades now.
Interestingly, when Roy was a student at Columbia Journalism School, his thesis adviser and programme director both rejected Cricket in the Caliphate because it didn't conform to their straitjacketed notions. It was eventually published on the website Roads and Kingdoms in 2017.
Difficult as it was for Roy to pursue the story then, I imagine it would be even harder now for someone to report a similar story, let alone get it published. The profession of journalism has been changing significantly over the past decade. Even where there is an appetite for nuanced stories, budgets are limited and newsroom staff skeletal. Few journalists today can travel and report deeply in multiple locations, more so if they belong to the Global South or don't return with a solid story. Yet, Roy regards himself as 'at best, an itinerant journalist—an outsider to the ranks of real journalists'.
When I hear the term 'real journalist' these days, I am reminded of a fictional character: Rachel from the first season of the show The White Lotus. She graduated from journalism school, but worked dead-end jobs aggregating content and click bait, with originality and accuracy subservient to quantity. This is not to say that 'real journalism' has disappeared, but pursuing it might be an unreal aspiration for most. Amid this, Roy's experiences provide a peek into a profession and style of working that might eventually transform beyond recognition.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh stated that the attacks on Rabindra Kachari Bari were a result of altercation between two visitors and the caretaker of the property. The statement added that two arrests have been made pertaining to the incident. "Attention of the Government of Bangladesh has been drawn to a reported incident in the government-owned property related to the revered Bengali Nobel laureate, poet Rabindranath Tagore, in the district of Sirajganj in Bangladesh. The incident centered around an altercation between two visitors and the Caretaker of the property a few days back which is managed by the Department of Archaeology of the Government," as per the statement. "Following the incident, a criminal case had already been filed with the local Police on 10th June. Two persons had also been arrested in this connection. A local inquiry board has also been formed by the District administration. Appropriate legal actions are being taken by the local administration," the statement read. The statement further said that in Bangladesh, there is no scope for any divisive attempt to fuel controversy on the attacks' incident. "The people and the Government of Bangladesh hold Poet Rabindranath Tagore in the highest of esteem and his contribution to our language, literature and culture is deeply revered. The Government and the people of Bangladesh would continue to cherish his contributions and would like to reiterate that in the Bangladesh national and cultural space there is no scope for any divisive and motivated attempt to foment controversy on the subject," as per the statement. Two investigation committees were formed to investigate the incident, the Bangladesh Cultural Ministry said in a statement on Friday. "On June 8, a fight and assault occurred between an employee on duty at Shahjadpur Rabindra Kacharibari and a visitor due to a misunderstanding and argument over a parking ticket", it said. "Rabindra Kachari Bari, Shahjadpur, Sirajgonj is a protected monument by the Bangladesh government. Every year, thousands of visitors from home and abroad come to visit the place associated with the poet's memory", the statement said.

New Delhi: India has strongly condemned the "despicable" and "disgraceful" act of violence and vandalism on poet, polymath, and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, describing the perpetrators of the act as "terrorists". Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home - Kutcherybari - now a museum in Bangladesh's Sirajganj district, was vandalised by a mob on Sunday, following a dispute between a visitor and museum staff over motorcycle parking fee. During the altercation, the visitor was allegedly confined and assaulted. The incident triggered public anger, which led to a protest near the entrance. Soon after, a mob stormed the premises, and damaged the museum and auditorium. 'PATTERN OF SYSTEMATIC ATTEMPTS BY EXTREMISTS' Outraged over the incident, India's Ministry of External Affairs expressed its displeasure and concern. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We strongly condemn the despicable attack and vandalism of the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore by a mob on June 8, 2025," adding that "The violent act is a disgrace to the memory, the inclusive philosophy, and the teachings that the Nobel laureate espoused in Bangladesh." Blaming it on the rise of extremism in Bangladesh in recent times, Mr Jaiswal said, "The attack falls in the broad pattern of systematic attempts made by extremists to erase the symbols of tolerance and eviscerate the syncretic culture and the cultural legacy of Bangladesh." Labeling the offenders as terrorists and demanding that the incident be dealt with strictly, Mr Jaiswal urged the Yunus government "to rein in the terrorists and take strict action against the perpetrators in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents that sadly have become a repetitive feature." WHAT BANGLADESH HAS DONE SO FAR Though a statement over the incident has not been issued by Dhaka, Bangladeshi authorities have temporarily closed the museum and launched a probe. A three-member committee formed by the Department of Archaeology has been asked to submit a report within five working days. Md Habibur Rahman, the custodian of the Rabindra Kutcherybari museum, said that the site is now completely out of bounds for visitors, adding that the entire premises has been put under surveillance. Meanwhile, several reactions poured in from India. OUTRAGE IN INDIA In a post on X, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called this incident "Shocking and Unacceptable." He added that this is happening "under the silent gaze of Mohammad Yunus's government." He called this "far beyond mere vandalism. It is a premeditated hate crime, an attack on the civilizational spirit and cultural heritage of Bharat." He further added that "Tagore is a global figure, but he remains a treasured symbol of India's soul. What we are witnessing is the ongoing marginalisation of Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh, their identity, history, and legacy being systematically eroded. The international community cannot afford to remain indifferent. This is a moment that demands attention, condemnation, and action." Shocked over the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to "kindly take up the matter very strongly with the neighbouring country's government, so that no stone is left unturned to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous and mindless act." Ms Banerjee mentioned in the letter that "For the people of Bengal, this is an attack on a shared legacy," and that "the invaluable treasure of Bengali language and literature owes significantly to the majestic contributions of Tagore." Rabindra Kutcherybari, now also known as the Rabindra Memorial Museum, was the administrative centre of the Tagore family estate. Purchased in 1840 by Dwarkanath Tagore, Rabindranath's grandfather for 13 rupees and 10 annas during an auction, this property was declared a protected archaeological site in 1969. Constructed in a distinct Indo-European architectural style, the house has seven main rooms, spacious corridors, and a large garden. It faces a river and is surrounded by open fields and greenery. The damaged auditorium is a 500-seat auditorium where many literary and cultural events are hosted - like the annual Rabindra Festival.

1 2 Guwahati: Faced with communal tension in border town Dhubri and provocative posters on integration of Dhubri district with Bangladesh appearing, the Assam govt on Friday issued shoot-at- sight orders. The govt is also rushing in Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF personnel in the district after mob clashes ensued over objectionable objects being found near a place of worship. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who visited the district on Friday said that at least three posters were retrieved by police at Dhubri which were pasted at various locations by one organization "Nabin Bangla." "Since last one week the law and order at Dhubri has been challenging. A communal group is trying to create disturbances which the government will not tolerate," Sarma said. Sarma later posted on X, "I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow zero tolerance against elements who desecrate….." places of worship. "In Dhubri, a particular group has become active with the intent to damage our temples. We have issued SHOOT AT SIGHT ORDERS," Himanta wrote. A day after Bakrid on June 7, an animal part was found in front of a place of worship, following which both Hindus and Muslims appealed for peace and harmony. The next day again the incident was repeated, and stones were thrown at night, Sarma added. Sarma said that for Bakrid, thousands of cattle were brought from West Bengal by a 'new beef mafia' in Dhubri. "I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,' Sarma said. He said that next year, he will be present at Dhubri on the day of Eid and stay the next day as well. "We are fully committed to ensure enforcement of law and order in the district and defeat all communal forces," he added. Dhubri district has the highest Muslim population in the entire state constituting 90 percent of the district's total population, majority of whom are believed to be of Bangladeshi origin.
