Scientists baffled after observing unusual behavior in vulnerable bird species: 'Their farming actions play an important role'
The superb lyrebird, an Australian ground-dwelling songbird, has long been known for its talent for mimicry and elaborate mating dance.
But scientists recently discovered that this bird is more than a master impressionist with a knack for shaking its tail feather — it's also a forest farmer with a surprisingly big impact.
As reported by Earth.com, researchers at La Trobe University recently published findings in the Journal of Animal Ecology that reveal the lyrebird actively cultivates its own food supply by raking through the forest floor. With this behavior, it plays a key role in maintaining biodiversity, offsetting what it eats by continuously replenishing the food source — and even preventing forest fires.
By observing the lyrebird's natural foraging technique and recreating it in a simulation, researchers learned just how much the bird was altering the environment and helping its favorite foods — invertebrates like worms, spiders, and centipedes — thrive.
According to the study's lead author, Alex Maisey, "Lyrebirds set up the perfect home for their prey, creating conditions with more food resources and effectively fattening them up before eating them."
In an article for The Conversation, the authors added: "The interaction between lyrebirds and invertebrates has wide benefits for forests. Invertebrates help cycle nutrients and disperse seeds. They also provide food for many birds, small mammals and reptiles."
Not only are lyrebirds enriching habitats for other creatures by spreading nutrients, but they're also helping prevent bushfires — a natural part of Australia's ecosystem that has become more frequent and intense due to rising global temperatures.
The researchers found lyrebirds can move around a whopping 155 tonnes (171 tons) of organic material per hectare, making sure it breaks down and enriches the soil. "Lyrebirds are widespread and active across millions of hectares of forest. Their farming actions play an important role in maintaining forest biodiversity," said Dr. Maisey.
By recognizing lyrebirds as "ecosystem engineers," conservationists hope to better protect their habitat — and in turn, protect the forests they help maintain.

As Dr. Maisey told the British Ecological Society: "Without the lyrebird, these forests would be vastly different — poorer in biodiversity and less resilient to disturbances like fire. Invasive tilapia have been threatening endangered cod populations in Australia's Mary River, but experts say the cod are biting back, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Conservationists from Burnett Mary Regional Group performed a routine survey in April, which involved catching and testing some of the region's Mary River cod. Researchers were pleased to discover traces of tilapia in two of the cods' mouths and also documented an 80-centimeter (31.5-inch) cod eating a 40-cm (15.75-in) tilapia. In other words, despite the fact that the tilapia are not native to the area and the cod haven't evolved to eat them, the endangered native fish have adapted and are eating them anyway. "There was always the hope and suspicion that [the cod] were eating everything," BMRG CEO Tom Espinoza said. "It's provided a lot of hope for people that are invested in healthy cod populations across the board. … Hopefully in 10, 15, 20 years' time, we've got a population of large cod that can do the rest of the job themselves. It's a real natural, sustainable solution." This is encouraging news, because as matters stand, the tilapia are a serious problem. They're invasive — meaning they came to the area from another region and thrived so well that it's damaging the ecosystem — and they eat the eggs and young of not only cod but also other endangered species such as the "bum-breathing" Mary River turtle, Australian lungfish, and white-throated snapping turtle. Because the tilapia have spread to 26 of Queensland's 67 catchments, it's considered impossible for humans to eradicate them. Left unchecked, they could destroy the native species in the river, damaging the ecosystem that both people and wildlife rely on. However, steps have been taken to control the population. Doctor mistakenly implants wrong embryo in IVF patient mix-up
One of Australia's top IVF providers mistakenly implanted a patient with her own embryo instead of her partner's. Monash IVF said the incident occurred on June 5 at a clinic in Melbourne but did not provide further details, such as how it learned of the bungle or what the couple planned to do next. The company said it was supporting the couple, who it did not identify. It marks the second fertility clinic mix-up of its kind in the country, heightening concerns about an industry that did not have much active government oversight until recently. The clinic said the patient's embryo was mistakenly implanted under a treatment plan which called for an embryo from the patient's partner to be transferred. The incident builds on a reputational maelstrom for Monash IVF, which was already reeling from an April disclosure that an Australian woman had given birth to a stranger's baby after a fertility doctor accidentally implanted the wrong embryo in Brisbane in 2023. That mix-up sparked concerns about security protocols at IVF clinics and an industry which is only now in the process of being more regulated. Monash claimed the world's first IVF pregnancy five decades ago and is Australia's second-largest IVF provider, carrying out nearly a quarter of the country's 100,000 assisted reproductive cycles a year, according to industry data. "This mix-up, the second reported incident at Monash IVF, risks shaking confidence not just in one provider but across the entire fertility sector," said Hilary Bowman-Smart, a researcher and bioethicist at the University of South Australia. Shares of Monash IVF were down 25 per cent by mid-session on Tuesday, against a rising broader market. The stock is just over half its value before the April announcement. "Families should have confidence that the treatment they are receiving is done to the highest standard," she said. The society reiterated a call to implement nationally consistent laws around IVF.
