Hong Kong's Cultural and Sporting Highlights to Catch This Spring/Summer 2025
Hong Kong is set for a busy season of events this spring and summer. Whether you're interested in traditional festivals, live sports, or art and music, the city's calendar offers a wide range of experiences to explore.
Kicking Off Festival Season: Cheung Chau Bun Festival
Hong Kong's events calendar starts strong with the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, held May 5 – 6 on the island of Cheung Chau. This historic celebration honours the sea god Pak Tai, who is credited with saving the island from plague centuries ago.
Highlights include the thrilling Bun Scrambling Competition, where climbers race up a 14-meter bamboo tower covered in buns, the colourful Piu Sik Parade featuring children on stilts, lion dances, Taoist rituals, and vegetarian feasts.
The festival attracts thousands of visitors, combining ancient traditions with lively community festivities. It also features a Climbing Carnival and extended activities that boost local tourism and economy.
Heritage and Culture Beyond the Bun Festival
The celebrations don't end with the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. From 7–8 June, the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races bring high-energy competition to the city's harbours, showcasing tradition, teamwork and festival spirit.
As part of the citywide Cultural Beat initiative, the races are just one of many events that highlight Hong Kong's vibrant cultural landscape this season.
Arts and Exhibitions Around the City
In addition to the many spring festivals, there is a range of sights to enjoy for art lovers. This includes events like the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong (May 22 -25), where 98 galleries explore themes of identity, community and creativity.
Running through July 13 is the French May Arts Festival, which fills city venues with theatre, music, dance, cinema and exhibitions.
During this time, at M+ in West Kowloon, art lovers can experience Picasso for Asia: A Conversation, an exhibition showcasing over 60 works from the Musée National Picasso-Paris alongside pieces from prominent Asian artists — a dialogue between cultures and eras.
What Else Is New in 2025
This year, Hong Kong introduces the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Month from May 31 to July 1, featuring tours, exhibitions, and carnival-style events celebrating the city's rich cultural traditions. A standout attraction is the Through the Looking Glass Miniature Exhibition (April–June), which uses interactive displays and lighting to bring Hong Kong's cityscapes to life in miniature form, offering a unique artistic experience.
Entertainment and sports also take centre stage this year. Cirque du Soleil's KOOZA debuts on May 21 at the Central Harbourfront, showcasing acrobatics and theatrical storytelling.
Sports fans can enjoy the Volleyball Nations League from June 18 to 22, featuring six international teams, and the high-profile Manchester United Challenge Cup match on May 30. Additionally, the new Kai Tak Sports Park will host a variety of events throughout May and June, injecting fresh energy into Hong Kong's leisure scene.
With traditional festivals, global exhibitions, and world-class sports on offer, Hong Kong is packed with things to see and do this spring and early summer.

Ex-Harimau Malaya star Krasniqi's wonder goal goes viral
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Harimau Malaya midfielder Liridon Krasniqi has unexpectedly resurfaced on the international radar after a video of his goal for "Team Germany" in the Baller League final went viral, catching the attention of Sky Sports Football. The 33-year-old, who last played professionally in the M-League for Terengganu in late 2023, stunned viewers with a thunderous first-time volley during the Baller League's grand final in London, England, on Thursday. A 31-second clip of the strike, along with Krasniqi's trademark celebration, was quickly picked up and shared by Sky Sports Football, thrusting the former Malaysia international back into the global spotlight. Donning the jersey of "Team Germany", Krasniqi opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the clash, which ended in a 10-1 demolition of Team UK. According to Baller League's official Instagram post, Krasniqi also netted a second goal in the eighth minute, giving him a brace in the final. The Baller League is an influencer-driven, indoor football spectacle featuring a mix of ex-pros, content creators and up-and-coming talents. Though not a traditional competition, its slick production and viral moments have earned it a loyal online following. A post on Baller League's official Instagram account — captioned "Made in Germany" — shows Team Germany celebrating with a tribute jersey to teammate "Prescott", with Krasniqi among those front and centre. The photo has since garnered over 25,000 likes, with Krasniqi himself among those who reacted to it. The former Kedah, Melaka, JDT and Terengganu midfielder became a Malaysian citizen in 2020 and earned 10 caps for the national team. Known for his fiery playing style and emotional bond with fans, Krasniqi developed a cult following during his time in the M-League. After fading from the national setup and local scene, his name had all but disappeared from football discussions, until now. With no official comeback announced, this viral moment may be a one-off flash of brilliance. Still, it has reignited nostalgia among Malaysian fans and raised eyebrows over how one of Malaysia's first naturalised players ended up scoring goals for "Team Germany" in Berlin.

Woodkid bends sound like origami for Hideo Kojima's ‘Death Stranding 2'
PARIS, June 11 — French singer and director Woodkid has composed the music for the hotly awaited Death Stranding 2 video game, with the 42-year-old telling AFP that the songs unfold 'almost like origami.' The author of hit 2013 debut album The Golden Age, who has previously worked with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, has produced dozens of hours of music for the Japanese-made action-adventure title. 'The main challenge is creating procedural music — music that evolves with the player, depending on their actions. And yet, still writing pop songs with vocals,' Woodkid, whose real name is Yoann Lemoine, told AFP. 'You have to unfold the songs almost like origami, turn them into versions that last several hours, which are then condensed and reprogrammed by developers,' he explained. A longtime video game enthusiast, Lemoine calls it a 'completely different approach' from scoring a film or writing a conventional album. An album of 16 tracks taken from the game is set to be released on Friday, titled Woodkid for Death Stranding 2. They include a collaboration with American actress Elle Fanning, who appears in the game, and another with Bryce Dessner, guitarist of indie rock band The National. Impressionistic Woodkid — who said playing video games was 'an escape' during his youth — said he jumped at the chance of working with legendary Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima. Kojima's work in the 1990s, particularly the original Metal Gear Solid, left a mark on Woodkid. The pair met in 2020 through a mutual friend. Kojima had already used one of Woodkid's tracks in the first Death Stranding, a celebrity-packed adventure game that sees players act as couriers in a post-apocalyptic world. The first one was set in the United States, while the second takes place in disaster-struck Mexico and Australia. As well as a debut from Fanning, the sequel again includes actors Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Lea Seydoux (No Time to Die) who play the main characters. 'We connected quickly, I think because we share common fantasies,' Woodkid said of his collaboration with Kojima, which involved several months of immersion in Tokyo. 'There's a darkness in us — dreamlike, fanciful, sometimes deeply melancholic — that bonds us.' Man in demand Their work was 'very impressionistic,' Woodkid explained. 'We start with fragments: percussion, beats, textures, vocal sketches I might try. He brings scenes and characters he describes to me, and we build everything together like a ping-pong exchange,' he added. 'Unlike a film, I didn't actually compose much to picture — it's more like thematic background music.' His skills as a composer and director have seen him called on by Taylor Swift for her video for 'Back to December', Lana Del Rey for 'Blue Jeans' and 'Born to Die', and Katy Perry for 'Teenage Dream'. Woodkid also directed French classical musician Mylene Farmer's most recent album, L'Emprise (2022), co-writing seven tracks. For Death Stranding 2, he worked with pianist Yvan Cassar, a long-time collaborator of the singer. 'I like staying in the shadows. I'm not a star. I believe in the works more than the artists, so I prefer focusing on the things I create,' he said. Asked whether he appears in Kojima's game himself, he lets the question hang, but can't help smiling. Death Stranding 2 will be available from June 26. — AFP
