South Africa's World Test Championship win: Winning against odds
South Africa's crowning glory at the home of cricket at Lord's, where they won the World Test Championship title, defeating Australia, tells the world they can step up to pressure. And it will also help them to address, and to calm, the roiling within.
A lovely post-win moment from the South African dressing room has gone viral. Ashwell Prince, the batting coach, led a celebratory song about Black captain Temba Bavuma, with everyone in the room mouthing the lyrics. So disgusted was Prince with the treatment he received during his playing days by his own teammates that years later, he found the words to articulate his anger: 'When things went wrong it was the quota players' fault (South Africa's policy to have non-White cricketers in the squad). When things went right, the others were the heroes. As long as I played for the national team, that was not a team. We were never one.' Makhaya Ntini, South Africa's legendary pacer, would run behind the team bus from hotel to ground as he never felt welcomed by his teammates, who wouldn't even sit with him during breakfast or include him in their dinner plans. It's this context that shouldn't be forgotten. And that's why Aiden Markram, who played a phenomenal knock in the final, raved about his captain's strength of spirit.
It's not surprising that only when they conquered their inner ghosts, the team could stub out the nasty opposition voices about how they handle pressure. Bavuma spoke about how some Australian players brought up the choking tag as a form of sledging during the game. It would be a fool who would now voice that sentiment in the near future. First they set their house in order, then they countered outsiders' perceptions. That is this South African team's great achievement.

ICC ready for 4-day Tests in 2027-29 WTC cycle; India, Australia, England to still play 5-day matches: Report
London: The International Cricket Council ( ICC ) is ready to sanction four-day Tests for smaller nations in the 2027-29 World Test Championship cycle but India, Australia and England can still play the traditional five-day matches , according a report here. The move to reduce matches by one day would be a significant change and can help smaller nations to play more Tests and longer series. "During discussions last week at the WTC final at Lord's, the ICC chair, Jay Shah , is understood to have expressed his support for four-day Tests, with a view to sanctioning them in time for the 2027-29 WTC cycle," a report in "The Guardian' newspaper said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perfectly Timed Photos You Won't Believe Are Real Read More "England, Australia and India would still be permitted to schedule five-Test series of five-day matches for the Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the first iteration of which begins with the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Friday." The ICC first sanctioned four-day Tests for bilateral contests in 2017. England played Zimbabwe over four days at Trent Bridge last month after four-day Tests against Ireland in 2019 and 2023. Live Events According to the report, "many smaller nations are reluctant to host Tests due to the time they take out of the schedule and the cost, but a move to four-day cricket would enable an entire three-Test series to be played in less than three weeks." "In four-day Tests the playing hours are extended to mandate a minimum of 98 overs per day rather than 90 overs to mitigate the time lost," it said. "South Africa's threadbare itinerary despite being crowned world champions in the thrilling final against Australia at Lord's last week has further highlighted the issue, and focused minds on the need for change," it added. The 2025-27 World Test Championship will, however, will continue under the existing format of five-day matches. It begins with Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh in a two-Test series on Tuesday. Of the 27 Test series to be played among nine countries contesting in the 2025-27 cycle, 17 will feature just two-match affairs whereas there will be six series of three matches. England, Australia and India will all play a five-Test series each against the other.

India's Squad For England Tests Increased From 18 To 19. Report Claims New Member Is...
Indian cricket squad for England Tests has a new addition, according to a report. The first India vs England Test in Leeds is only three days away, and it seems that the Gautam Gambhir -coached side wants to bolster its strength further. On May 24, an 18-member squad was announced. With the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the side bore a fresh look. Sai Sudharshan received his maiden Test call-up while Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur made a comeback. Another striking feature of the squad was the presence of five fast bowlers - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh. Now, according to a report in Dainik Jagran, Harshit Rana has also been added to the squad. If the report is true, he will become the 19th member of the squad. No official confirmation has come from the BCCI regarding the addition. Earlier, sources, who are aware of the development, told news agency IANS: 'Yes, after a lot of speculation going around, it has now been confirmed that Rana will stay back with the Indian Test team. But it is yet to be known if he will be officially added to the Indian Test squad ahead of the series starting on June 20.' It is understood that the members of India 'A' team who aren't in the main Test side or haven't landed a county deal yet might be on the flight back home on Tuesday. In England, Rana got his chance to play in the first game against England Lions at Canterbury, where he returned with 1-99 and made 16 runs. Rana made his Test debut on last year's tour of Australia, where he managed to pick just four wickets at an average of 50.75, with his best figures being 3-48 in Perth. He was not selected for the upcoming five-match series against England as the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee picked Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna to be in the fast-bowling department alongside Jaspreet Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Overall, the New Delhi-based Rana averages 27.79 with the ball in 13 first-class cricket games, having taken 48 wickets. He also averages 32.80 with the bat, including hitting a century and two fifties. India, captained by Shubman Gill, are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. The five-match Test series, to be played at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval, will also be India's first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
