Satwiksairaj-Chirag move to quarterfinals of Singapore Open
Singapore City [Singapore], May 29 (ANI): The top Indian men's doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Singapore Open tournament on Thursday.
'Sat-Chi', as they are known popularly, defeated the world number eight pair of Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Muhammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in a remarkable match which saw them come back from being down 19-21 in the first game to win the next two closely contested games by 21-16, 21-19.
The official X handle of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) posted, 'Quarterfinals, here we come! Satwik/Chirag dig deep to take down World No. 8 Gutama/Isfahani in a thrilling R16 comeback: 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 . Big fight, big heart -- on to the Last Eight at the Singapore Open 2025!'

In the tournament's opener, the duo secured a win in straight games against the world number 41 duo of Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal of Malaysia by 21-16, 21-13.
This marks their first competition since pre-quarterfinal elimination at the All England Open in March. Chirag was injured while Satwik faced health issues, forcing them to exit the tournament.
Satwiksairaj and Chirag, who failed to win the medal in the Paris Olympics, aim to recapture the magic that saw them make it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open and India Open back to back this year.
The last Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour title of the duo dates back to May 2024, when they won the Thailand Open.

Zii Jia keeps 'em waiting over decision to join RTG or not

(7/8/2024). —AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star PETALING JAYA: The ball is now in professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia's court as he weighs a decision on whether to accept the offer to join the elite sports programme, Road to Gold (RTG), in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh revealed that she had met the world No. 15 last week and presented him with the terms as well as the additional support he would receive if he joins the programme. Although Zii Jia has until the end of June to make up his mind, Hannah is hopeful that he will come on board as it would allow him access to more comprehensive medical support in the event of future injuries. Zii Jia was listed in the new batch of RTG athletes due to his status as a bronze medallist at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old had previously been offered a spot in the programme but opted to make his own preparations independently. RTG is an elite sports programme that offers additional support to athletes with the potential to deliver an Olympic gold medal. 'We met with them (Team LZJ) last week and basically discussed the benefits of the RTG programme. We hope that by offering these services to Zii Jia, he will say yes,' said Hannah. 'He has nothing to lose. It's an additional support facility provided by the government, even for independent athletes. The road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is still long, another three years and in sports, the risk of injury is always there. 'If you're part of Road to Gold, you'll receive recovery support, just like what was provided to Datuk Azizulhasni Awang and Ng Tze Yong.'' The Kedah-born shuttler is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a right ankle injury and is expected to make his return at the Japan Open in July. Apart from Zii Jia, others listed in the latest RTG batch include badminton players Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. ‘Better to stay with BAM', Chong Ming tells Pearly-Thinaah
'IT'S better to stay with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) than to turn professional' and that was the advice from former national shuttler Chan Chong Ming to nationl top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who are currently considering their future with the national body. The former men's doubles player believes that remaining with BAM offers the duo significant advantages, particularly in terms of support services that independent players often lack. 'I think Pearly-Thinaah should stay (with BAM). If you stay with the association, you don't need to worry how to book air tickets, accommodation and injury issues as you have a support team,' he told reporters when met at the Daikin International Badminton Championship 2025, here, today. Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Pearly-Thinaah have yet to sign a new contract with BAM following the expiry of their previous deal at the end of last year. Chong Ming, who now runs a badminton academy, said his experience coaching independent players shows that BAM still offers superior physical preparation resources. 'As a coach, we have experience in competition, like tactical, but in terms of strength and conditioning, we (professional coaches) aren't there yet (top level),' he said. While encouraging Pearly-Thinaah to focus on their current tournaments, Hannah hoped that the world number four pair to consider the benefits and long term commitments of staying within the national setup under the BAM. She cited the notable progress of national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik as an example of what structured support within BAM can provide. Aaron-Wooi Yik are in a sensational form, having won three titles since last April namely Badminton Asia Championships 2025, Thailand Open 2025 last month and Singapore Open 2025, last Sunday. In the meantime, Hannah, who was delighted with Aaron-Wooi Yik's recent performance, hopes the two-times Olympic Games bronze medallists can maintain their consistency under the tutelage of national men's doubles head coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, who took up the role last February.
