
Coface Asia Payment Survey 2025 Companies expect payment behaviours to worsen amid economic uncertainty
HONG KONG SAR / SHANGHAI & BEIJING, CHINA / TAIPEI, TAIWAN / SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA / TOKYO, JAPAN - Media OutReach Newswire - 11 June 2025 - The Asia Payment Survey, conducted by Coface in Q1 2025, provides insights into the evolution of payment behaviour and credit management practices of about 2,400 companies across the Asia Pacific region. Respondents are active in nine markets (Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) and 13 sectors.
Average payment terms rose slightly to 65 days in 2024 from 64 in 2023
The average payment delay was unchanged at 65 days in 2024 but the share of companies experiencing payment delays dropped to 49%.
The share of companies reporting ultra-long payment delays (ULPDs[1]) exceeding 2% of annual turnover rose to a new high at 40%, up from 23% in 2023. Wood, Agro-food and Automotive reported the highest increase.
57% of companies expect payment behaviours to worsen in the next six months, citing slowing demand, competitive pressure, and rising costs as top risks.
33% of companies expected business outlook to deteriorate in 2025.
"Asia-Pacific experienced a slowdown in growth in 2024 due to slow growth in global demand, rising costs and high interest environment. The record surge in ULPDs signals that companies expect to face mounting financial strain. Along with escalating tariffs, businesses are bracing for a more volatile trade and policy environment. We have revised the GDP growth forecast for Asia to 3.8% in 2025. " said Bernard Aw, Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific at Coface.
Credit terms still tight and may tighten ahead
Credit conditions remained tighter in 2024 compared to before 2023. Payment terms rose from 64 days in 2023 to 65 but below the five-year average of 69 days in 2018-2022.
Ten of the 13 sectors surveyed saw their payment terms increase in 2024. The sharpest rise was recorded in the automotive sector followed by textiles and chemicals. Increasing competition in the auto market prompted dealers to be more flexible in granting credit and to use it as a competitive tool.
Looking ahead, two-thirds of companies expect shorter payment terms, reflecting caution and higher priority for cash preservation amid heightened uncertainty.
Rising concern as ultra-long payment delays hit record high
The average payment delay remained stable at 65 days, unchanged from 2023.
Transport and Automobile reported higher payment delays (respectively +2% and +1% vs 2023).
However, the share of companies reporting ULPDs - payment delays over 180 days and exceeding 2% of annual revenue - rose dramatically to a new high at 40%, up from 23% in 2023. This represent a very high risk, given that 80% of these delays have never been paid, according to Coface's experience. Such delays were highest in China, India, Thailand and Malaysia. All 13 sectors also saw increased ULPDs, with the most notable increases in Wood (+37%), Agro-food (+20%) and Automotive (+18%).
This trend is expected to continue over the next six months as 57% of companies expected a deterioration in late payments.
Outlook: Shifting trade policies expected to impact economic sentiment
We expect the economic outlook for 2025 to continue to weaken. Higher tariffs and shifting trade policies have increased uncertainty over global economic policy, weighing heavily on business spending and consumer confidence. In addition, companies also cite over-competitive pressures, slowing demand and higher labour costs as additional risks.
33% of respondents expect business activity to deteriorate in 2025 (vs 2024), more than double as compared to last year's survey. Taiwan and Singapore were the most pessimistic, where over 4 out of 10 respondents expect deteriorating business activity.
'Asia-Pacific growth slowed in 2024 as demand weakened. The rebound in trade last year has marginally offset the decline in 2023. In the face of continued and heightened geo-political uncertainty and increasing costs, many businesses are anticipated to strengthen their credit management measures and prioritise cost management.' said Bernard Aw, Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific at Coface.

Kenya, China to finalise financing deals ‘before end of June'
Kenya says it intends to thrash out finer details with China financing infrastructure projects before end of June, signalling pursuit of a project seen as crucial for improving trade and transportation. Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said he had directly appealed to Chinese counterparts to speed up the deals meant to extend the Standard Gauge Railway and widen the main highway to Malaba. Mr Mudavadi is in China and, on Tuesday, met with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the main cooperation platform between China and African countries. But Mudavadi had travelled to Changsha in southern China with a view to finalising financing agreements on which both countries had agreed in principle back in April, when President William Ruto toured Beijing on a state visit. At the meeting with Wang, Kenya's top diplomat said it is 'fundamentally important' that the deals on financial cooperation be thrashed out before end of June, potentially targeting the new financial year as the start timelines for implementing the projects.'On Economic Partnership Cooperation Framework, Kenya is consulting internally and should be ready before end June. Therefore, it is important for the technical teams to meet and begin preparations for bilateral negotiations which will ultimately to more access to the Chinese market for Kenyan goods and services.'After the state visit, President Ruto agreed with the Chinese, in principle, to construct the standard gauge railway from Naivasha on to Kisumu and Malaba. But there financing details were to be agreed. Initially, the proposal was a shared costing with Kenya footing some 30 percent, the Chinese to take another 30 while a private consortium to take up the balance in an overall arrangement that involved the public-private partnership (PPP). Kenya has since proposed that its share of the burden be lessened with an uptake of more Chinese funding. Overall, however, Kenya and China had signed up to 15 Memorandums of understanding (MOU), most of them tied to improving trade and infrastructure. They included the Framework Agreement on Economic Partnership for shared Development which constitutes collaboration on sustainable development of the manufacturing industry, agricultural transformation and improving Kenya's competitiveness in the global market. The agreement is to guide the facilitation of trade, inclusive growth, coordination of supply chain and the digital economy. They also signed a MOU on cooperation in the Railway sector where there is to be a review of the Railway sector laws, regulations and Policies as well as the development of Railway technical and operation standards. The MOU could guide the planning and subsequent advancement and development of railway infrastructure to cover locomotives, rolling stock and railway operational management as part of the multimodal transport. A dispatch from the Chinese Foreign Ministry was not specific on the deals but indicated that Wang had affirmed China's willingness 'to work with Kenya in implementing the consensus reached by the two Presidents and strengthen bilateral relations.'This trip, however, was Mudavadi's clear-the-air opportunity. In the wake of the state visit, Americans legislators had criticised Kenya for turning its back on Washington, after Ruto criticised the US unilateral trade tariffs while on Chinese soil. Mudavadi had travelled to Washington soon after that State Visit in what he said was to elaborate on Kenya's pursuit of all alliances with those who boost its interests. Trump ‘very happy' with China trade deal, says framework ‘done'
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he was 'very happy' with a trade deal that restored a fragile truce in the U.S.-China trade war, a day after negotiators from Washington and Beijing agreed on a framework covering tariff rates. 'We made a great deal with China. We're very happy with it,' Trump told reporters before a performance at Washington's Kennedy Center on Wednesday evening. 'We have everything we need, and we're going to do very well with it. And hopefully they are too.' Earlier, Trump used his Truth Social platform to announce the agreement was 'done, subject to final approval from President Xi and me.' The deal involves China supplying rare earths and magnets to U.S. companies while the United States would abandon threats to revoke visas for Chinese students. 'Full magnets and any necessary rare earths will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities,' Trump wrote. The U.S. president stated that America would have tariffs of 55 per cent on Chinese goods. A White House official later clarified this figure represents the sum of a baseline 10 per cent 'reciprocal' tariff on goods from nearly all trading partners, 20 per cent on Chinese imports related to fentanyl concerns, and pre-existing 25 per cent levies from Trump's first term. China's tariffs on U.S. imports would remain at 10 per cent. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the 55 per cent rate is fixed and unalterable. 'You can definitely say that,' he told CNBC on Wednesday when asked if tariff levels on China would not change. The negotiations were aimed at cooling tensions between the world's two largest economies after a rapid escalation of tariffs earlier this year nearly paralysed trade between them. The Geneva deal reached last month had faltered over China's continued curbs on critical minerals exports, prompting the Trump administration to respond with export controls preventing shipments of semiconductor design software, jet engines for Chinese-made planes and other goods to China. Top officials from both countries convened for urgent discussions in London beginning Monday. These talks were arranged following a telephone conversation between Trump and Xi last week, which helped resolve tensions that had emerged shortly after their initial agreement in Geneva. 'We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus and the call between the two presidents,' Lutnick told reporters after the London talks. Both sides will now present the framework to their respective presidents for approvals, he added. Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang also confirmed a trade framework had been reached in principle. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told lawmakers that the deal would not reduce U.S. export restrictions on high-end artificial intelligence chips in exchange for access to Chinese rare earths. 'There is no quid pro quo in terms of chips for rare earths,' Bessent said during a U.S. Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing. The London talks were triggered partly by U.S. concerns about China's export restrictions on rare earth minerals, which are essential for manufacturing everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. U.S. stocks drifted lower on Wednesday but have recouped most of the losses suffered earlier in the spring during Trump's wave of tariff announcements. In May, a temporary truce reached in Geneva brought Trump's new U.S. tariffs on Chinese products down from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, while Beijing slashed levies on U.S. imports to 10 per cent and promised to lift barriers on critical mineral exports. It was not immediately clear from Trump's comments where things stood regarding the timeline for a more comprehensive deal that was reached last month in Geneva, which had set a deadline of August 10.
