Restoration of Kamla Nehru Ridge to check waterlogging

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has initiated plans to restore the depression at Kamla Nehru Ridge by converting it into a water body, complementing ongoing restoration efforts.

The project involves channelling rainwater from adjacent areas through a network of pipelines. This initiative was approved following a site visit by lieutenant governor VK Saxena.
The inspection primarily focused on revitalising the open green lungs of Kamla Nehru Ridge, which serve thousands of residents from densely populated neighbourhoods such as Kamla Nagar, Malka Ganj, Delhi University, Shakti Nagar, Civil Lines, and Mall Road.
"Upon noticing a large dry depression within the ridge, the LG instructed officials to connect it with channels and pipelines from nearby waterlogged areas like Malka Ganj and Civil Lines. This will ensure excess rainwater is directed into the depression, creating a new water body. A similar project in Roshanara Bagh successfully replenished its lake and mitigated waterlogging," said an official.
Saxena also noted the poor condition of the kachha paths, gym equipment, boundary walls, and historical monuments like 'Bonta' within the ridge.
He reviewed recent works and expressed satisfaction with the laying of porous jute carpeting on pathways and walking tracks, urging that the remaining restoration be completed swiftly.
The inspection also addressed persistent waterlogging on Delhi roads, with Public Works Department (PWD) officials present. The LG directed accelerated remedial actions.
A key directive was to implement a robust rainwater harvesting system.

"Three-foot diameter pipelines should be laid from footpaths directly into the Kamla Nehru Ridge forest, channelling excess rainwater into the Ridge ecosystem for conservation and groundwater recharge. These pipes should extend about four feet inside the Ridge's boundary to effectively divert surface water," an official said.
Footpaths on Rajpur Road are to be repaired to a uniform width of two metres, with similar repairs planned along the Delhi University routes.
Additional instructions included pruning trees, fixing manhole covers, adding secondary covers to water tapping pits, and relocating electric poles obstructing roads. All work is to be completed within seven days.
Beyond monsoon preparedness, directions were issued to clear excess foliage, hanging wires, redundant cables, dead wood, and other encumbrances along the Ridge's boundary wall. The LG had earlier visited the Ridge on March 21, directing ecological improvements such as covering walking tracks with biodegradable jute mats.

Bulldozers flatten Madrasi Camp amid heavy security

As dawn broke on Sunday, bulldozers rumbled into Madrasi Camp in south Delhi's Jangpura under the watchful eyes of a police contingent and started tearing down hundreds of houses in the decades-old slum cluster, while stunned residents, some teary-eyed, looked on. The demolitions were a result of a Delhi High Court order dated May 9, which directed the authorities to clear the area along the Barapullah drain as part of a restoration and cleaning drive for the 16-kilometre-long drain, which flows into the Yamuna river. Wiping her tears, Rani, a 50-year-old widow, said, 'My family left Madras [now Chennai] 55 years ago without any belongings. I built my house, which meant the world to me, from scratch. In a minute, they razed it.' The area was inhabited mostly by residents hailing from Tamil Nadu. 155 families not on list Of the 370 families in the area, 215 were found eligible for relocation under the 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan' rehabilitation scheme. A total of 189 have been offered flats in Narela, while the remaining 26, found eligible under a revised list, are still awaiting allotment. Members of the other families, which were declared ineligible, said surveyors rejected their claims citing reasons such as their names missing from voter lists and minor spelling mismatch in their documents. While some families are said to have moved their belongings 40 km away to Narela, the exact count remains unclear. Several residents said the flats allotted to them lack basic amenities, including electricity and water, and have broken doors and no windows. The Delhi Development Authority, which allotted the flats, did not respond to these claims till the time of going to press. Revati, 50, said, 'Here [Jangpura], the rent is very high. The flat in Narela is too far and not liveable. I am stuck in this situation.' Annapurna, 60, added, 'Would sitting inside those (Narela) houses ensureroti (bread)?' Families with school-going children raised concerns over the lack of a Tamil-medium school in Narela, such as one near Barapullah. Some students said they barely understand Hindi, posing a major educational barrier. Aam Aadmi Party Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'On May 31, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta claimed that not a single jhuggi would be touched. But today, Madrasi Camp was razed, leaving thousands homeless.' BJP Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva responded, 'Our government has provided alternative flats. AAP must explain why it treated slum dwellers as vote banks and failed to rehabilitate them.' Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva said, 'These people survive on meagre incomes. Sending them far off isn't right, there should've been humanitarian consideration.'

As bulldozers move in, Delhi's Madrasi Camp residents watch decades of life disappear

Janki, 65, and her daughter-in-law, Sumodhi, 35, sit on a couple of upturned buckets in the midst of all they could save from their house as they watch it being razed by a bulldozer. Their house was part of the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, which was built overlooking the Barapullah drain and was demolished Sunday by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on the directions of the Delhi High Court. Janki's family of three, including her son and daughter-in-law, are among those 155 unlucky families which were not eligible to receive a house as rehabilitation from the DDA. Now, 50 years after she came to Delhi with her husband from a village near Tamil Nadu, she sits at the centre of whatever belongings the family could save from the house: kitchen utensils, some clothes, mattresses, bed sheets, a bucket, and two chairs. Beside her is a row of residents sitting on remnants of a once-thriving Tamilian community. 'The reason why we thought Madrasi Camp would be safe has now caused its destruction. No one thought anyone would want to build anything besides a drain,' she says. In an order issued in March, the Delhi High Court observed that the Barapulla drain was blocked due to the jhuggi jhopri cluster of the Madrasi Camp. The court stated that it was crucial to clear the Barapullah drain, as the monsoon was expected to arrive within the next two to three months. While the demolition was earlier scheduled for May 10, it was postponed to June 1 by the Delhi High Court as it directed the DDA and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to ensure amenities at the flats in Narela allotted to Madrasi Camp dwellers and also directed the authorities to hold special camps to hand over possession letters and facilitate bank loans. 'Those who earn more can think of renting another place. However, in my household, I earn only about Rs 7,000-8,000 per month. How will we pay for rent?' asks Sumodhi, who works as a domestic help in nearby bungalows. Residents upset about being relocated to Narela Even the 215 families found eligible for rehabilitation and allotted flats in Narela have long objected to being relocated to the Northwest Delhi suburb, 50 km away from their present accommodation, due to its distance from their present workplaces and alleged substandard quality of flats. Many residents were also hopeful of another court intervention to further postpone the demolition, considering the Delhi High Court had halted a demolition in Okhla two days ago. 'Till the end, we had thought that we would not have to move,' says Selvi, whose daughter is a Class 12 student at the nearby Delhi Tamil Education Association school on Lodhi Estate, which teaches Tamil language and culture to students. 'Then the bulldozers rolled in this morning with so many policemen. My daughter is in Class 12, the most important year of her studies. It is not possible to travel from Narela every day, and changing schools in the last year also cannot be done,' adds Selvi, whose son studies in Ramanujan College, which is less than 15 minutes away. For now, the family, like many others who have received Narela flats, has rented a one-bedroom flat in Bhogal for Rs 12,000 per month. Others have found rented accommodations in Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram. Veeran, 40, vacated his house two days ago and took his belongings to a room he found for his family in Bhogal. He is now sitting beside whatever scrap material he could scavenge, such as some water pipelines, a couple of taps and some iron bars, to sell and earn whatever little he could. While his wife works as a domestic help, he washes the cars of the same bungalow owners. 'This is a posh area, so everyone from the Madrasi Camp finds work in the nearby houses of rich people. What work will I do in Narela? My kids are also in the DTEA school. Where will they study there?' he asks. 'I have also been to the flats in Narela. All the pipes and tiles have been stolen. There is no water or electricity there. How do they expect us to go and live there?'

You should choose this product because it delivers efficient, thorough cleaning while saving water and protecting your clothes. Both types have their pros. Front-load machines are more water- and energy-efficient, provide better cleaning, and are gentler on clothes. Top-load models are easier to load and usually wash faster. If space-saving and eco-friendliness matter, choose a front-load. For a more budget-friendly and user-friendly option, go for a top-load. It really depends on your washing habits and budget preferences. Front-load 7 kg machines typically use 45-60 litres of water per cycle, while top-load models may use 120 litres or more. In terms of electricity, it usually consumes about 1-1.5 units per wash, depending on the wash cycle and heating function. Opting for a 5-star energy-rated model with inverter technology helps reduce long-term electricity costs while ensuring consistent performance. It depends on the blanket size and machine model. A 7 kg washing machine can handle lightweight single blankets or throws. However, thick double or king-sized blankets may be too bulky and could strain the drum or reduce cleaning effectiveness. Always check the manufacturer's guidelines. For frequent heavy loads, a larger 8 or 9 kg machine is a better long-term choice to avoid wear and tear. Type (Front Load vs Top Load): Front-load machines are more energy- and water-efficient and provide better cleaning, while top-load machines are easier to use and often more affordable. Wash Programs: Look for models with multiple wash modes (cotton, delicate, quick wash, etc.) to suit different fabric types and laundry needs. Energy Efficiency: Choose a 5-star rated model or one with inverter technology to save on electricity in the long run. Space & Installation: Ensure the machine fits well in your laundry area with proper water inlet, drainage, and electrical points. Spin Speed (RPM): Higher spin speeds (above 1000 RPM) dry clothes faster, which is helpful in humid or monsoon-prone areas. Additional Features: Features like a digital display, child lock, delay timer, in-built heater, and auto-restart add convenience and enhance the washing experience.
