Old Etonian who threatened to throw ex-partner down well is jailed for 24 years

Independent02-04-2025

An Old Etonian who threatened to throw his former partner down a well at his family's country estate has been jailed for 24 years for attempted murder.
Douglas Clifton Brown, 56, argued with Camilla Welby in the car after drinks at a friend's house and then attacked her in August 2023.
Judge Alice Robinson, sentencing at Norwich Crown Court, said Clifton Brown became angry about a perceived slight and drove past the turning for Miss Welby's house when he was supposed to be driving her home.
The judge said the defendant, of Congham, Norfolk, told Miss Welby he would 'drop her off at the next village and she could walk home in the dark', but then started driving again after he 'tried unsuccessfully to get her out of the car'.
'On the way you were angry, shouted and repeatedly struck her in the face,' the judge said, noting that Miss Welby's nose was broken and her eye sockets were bruised.
She told Clifton Brown: 'You said you were going to take her (Miss Welby) to a disused well at High House, throw her in it then yourself.'
The High House Estate, now a wedding venue and near Congham, has been in his family for generations.
The judge said the defendant had 'recently topped up the water in the well, it was in a remote wooded location'.
She said the journey to the estate took up to 40 minutes and Clifton Brown drove right up to the well, got out of the car and Miss Welby was in 'complete terror that she was about to be killed'.
She said Miss Welby was able to grab her scarf and wind it round Clifton Brown's neck to get him off her.
The judge described the incident as an 'angry, drunken and petulant, albeit extreme, reaction to the perceived slight from Ms Welby earlier in the evening and likely a build-up of antagonism during your relationship'.
'I accept that the impulsivity associated with ADHD may have played a part in the offending by impairing your ability to exercise appropriate judgment,' she said.
She said that in mid-2023 Clifton Brown and Miss Welby had been in a relationship for around 15 years.
Clifton Brown told Miss Welby, while on holiday in Greece that summer, that the relationship was over, the judge said.
She said Miss Welby 'wanted an amicable separation' and said Clifton Brown could stay at her home for two months while he found a place to stay.
The judge said that on the day of the incident 'everything was fine until she (Miss Welby) got in the car'.
'You accused her of belittling you in front of your friends when describing her daughter's wedding and felt she had underplayed your role,' she said.
'Although what precipitated the argument may have been trivial, your reaction was not.'
Clifton Brown was found guilty of attempted murder after an earlier trial, and had previously admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and making a threat to kill.
The judge said Clifton Brown would be entitled to be released on licence after serving two thirds of his 24-year sentence.

Chris Brown returns to Manchester for first show in city since prison release

It seems Chris Brown was keen to go incognito as he returned to Manchester for the first time since his arrest, later making a triumphant stage comeback on stage despite divided opinions. The American singer was released from prison last month after a second bail application was successful, having previously been detained and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent during an alleged 2023 nightclub bottle attack. Brown, 36, was staying at the five-star Lowry Hotel when police came knocking on May 15. A week later, Southwark Crown Court heard that he had been freed under bail conditions and ordered to pay a £5million security fee guaranteeing his return. It had been uncertain whether the R&B star would be continuing with his tour, which had been due to kick off just days after his release. However, a judge ruled that he was able to, meaning he recently jetted back to the UK for a string of shows. Despite thousands of social media users demanding his gigs be axed, Brown played in the new Co-op Live Arena tonight, where he'll do a second concert tomorrow before heading to Cardiff on June 19. Brown will then return to Manchester for a third show on June 24, which was added due to high demand. The Virginia-born Under The Influence artist was spotted ahead of the show this evening, being shielded by his team, who kept him dry with umbrellas. Brown cut a typically casual figure, wearing a graphic T-shirt and a beanie, plus designer diamond earrings. His face was barely visible as he was papped out in the city, staff also carrying a large board to cover him entirely. However, Brown was more than visible to thousands of paying fans later in the night as he received a warm reception for his Breezy Bowl XX European leg. Taking to X with footage from moments of the show, fans revealed that Brown brought out 50 Cent as a surprise guest. The rapper shared a handshake with Brown before launching into a tune, sending the venue wild. 50 Cent, real name Curtis James Jackson III, previously voiced support for Brown after he had been arrested, so it's perhaps not surprising at all that he was the famous friend he selected for a cameo in Manchester. The In da Club hitmaker, 49, took to his Instagram Story after Brown was denied bail for the first time, sharing a screenshot of a news story detailing the update. His caption read: 'Damn they doing CB dirty, they knew about this case for 2 years. This is gonna muck up the whole tour. WTF going on! @50centaction @bransoncognac.' He isn't the only A-lister to have displayed solidarity with the Grammy winner, as collaborator and long-time friend Justin Bieber has too. When Brown posted his first Insta feed snap after his release, which was a photo of him stepping off a private jet, Bieber commented: 'Welcome home'. After his world tour began, Brown actually made the most of his recent press attention and built it into his production. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, an intro VT to the tour's first night included interview footage from Brown's 2017 documentary Welcome To My Life, which was used alongside snippets from music videos, news stories about his arrest, and even a mugshot. His video was met with rapturous applause from the audience in Amsterdam, with many of his supporters featured in the short film to declare their love for 'Team Breezy,' stating that they always felt he would 'come back stronger'. Brown has made no secret of his feelings about being locked up, having declared in his social media return that he had been freed from a 'cage'. 'FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!! BREEZYBOWL,' he wrote in reference to his upcoming tour shortly after getting his phone back. The Go Crazy singer is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Abraham Diaw in February 2023. Manchester Magistrates' Court heard last month that Mr Diaw was standing at the bar of the Tape nightclub when he was struck several times with a bottle. More Trending It's alleged that he was then pursued to a separate area of the club where he was punched and kicked repeatedly. Brown, who has maintained his innocence throughout, will next appear with his co-defendant, US national Omololu Akinlolu, 38, in court on June 20. His bail conditions state that he is now not allowed to visit the nightclub where the incident allegedly took place, and he cannot contact Mr Diaw. Got a story? Two men jailed for theft of £4.75m gold toilet from Blenheim Palace

Two men have been jailed for the theft of a £4.75 million gold toilet from Blenheim Palace. The fully-functioning 18-carat gold toilet, which had been installed as an artwork at the Oxfordshire country house where Sir Winston Churchill was born, was stolen in a raid in the early hours of September 14 2019. Michael Jones, 39, from Oxford, has been jailed for 27 months. James Sheen, 40, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, has received a four-year prison sentence. Sheen is also serving a 19-year sentence for a string of thefts, including £400,000 worth of tractors and high-value trophies from the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket. The pair were part of the gang who planned and carried out the burglary of the Oxfordshire stately home. The fully functioning toilet was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and was a star attraction in an exhibition at Blenheim Palace, the house where Sir Winston Churchill was born. The heist took place hours after a glamorous launch party, and the distinctive toilet was split up or melted down and sold on soon after it was stolen and has never been recovered. The toilet was stolen during a five-minute period by sledgehammer-wielding thieves who smashed their way in, Oxford Crown Court heard. They drove through locked wooden gates into the grounds of the palace in two stolen vehicles before breaking in through a window. Entitled America, the toilet weighed approximately 98 kilogrammes, was insured for six million US dollars (£4.75 million) and was made from gold, which was itself worth about £2.8 million. Passing sentence, Judge Ian Pringle KC said: 'This bold and brazen heist took no more than five-and-a-half minutes to complete. "America has never been seen again."
