The NBA Has a Star Problem

– If you tuned into the thrilling Game 1 of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals on June 5, you may have found yourself wondering: Who are these guys?
There's no LeBron James, no Stephen Curry. No Los Angeles Lakers, no New York Knicks, nor even any Boston Celtics. Neither of the teams – the Indiana Pacers or the Oklahoma City Thunder – had been in the NBA Finals for more than a decade. To the average sports fan, their rosters are largely unknown.
'I'm not sure I completely buy into the premise of your question,' Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, said when asked about a Finals with limited star power. 'I think Shai is an enormous star.'
He was referring to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who won the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) this season after leading the league in scoring and helping drive the Thunder to 68 wins, the most in franchise history. Silver also mentioned Tyrese Haliburton, the Pacers guard with a penchant for late-game heroics.
But even Silver acknowledged those players are lesser known outside basketball fandom than the league's biggest stars. In some ways, that's a product of what the league wants – for all of its teams, no matter how small the market, to have a chance at making the Finals. But that change also conflicts with one of its major tenets – that star power sells.
Stars have fuelled the NBA since the 1980s. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson drove its stampede into the popular consciousness, and then Michael Jordan globalised the game. Stars drive viewership and interest, which in turn drive up the price of media rights deals, cash from sponsors, ticket sales and team valuations.
For the past decade, the league's ecosystem has revolved around James and Curry. James is now 40 years old, and Curry is 37. The question of who will be the next face of the league, once those two have retired, has hung over the sport for years.
The league's new push for parity could hurt its search for stars. Silver noted that part of what made Curry, James and all the superstars who came before them so popular was that they regularly played for championships. But the NBA has deliberately made it harder to build a dominating superteam, and long strings of Finals appearances are no longer the norm.
At the same time, audiences are shrinking. More than 35 million people watched Game 6 of the 1998 Finals, in which Jordan won his sixth (and final) NBA championship. In 2023, when the Denver Nuggets won their first championship, the series averaged 11.6 million viewers per game.
Winning alone does not guarantee the same amount of exposure as it once did.
To some extent, stars are made. When Victor Wembanyama, the Frenchman who is nearly 7½ feet tall, was set to enter the NBA, the league promoted his games while he was playing in France.
But talent and exposure can take a star only so far. The best player on the 2023 championship Denver Nuggets team, for example, was Nikola Jokic, a Serbian centre who has won the league's MVP award three times and is one of the best to have ever played the game. But he had no interest in promoting himself and didn't capitalise on the moment to build his brand.
Jaclyn Reilly, co-founder of Ethos Group, a brand strategy firm that works with WNBA star Angel Reese, said the fracturing media landscape, with its ever increasing choices of content, made it more difficult for an athlete to stand out. 'That's why it's even more important for the athlete to be strategic,' she said.
All eyes are on Haliburton and Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder have built a sustainable team that some expect to be championship contenders for years. That would give more exposure to Gilgeous-Alexander's game play, his fun sense of fashion and his signature shoe with Converse. His profile has already risen this season.
For the Pacers, Haliburton has created several viral moments this season. In a play-off game against the Knicks in May, he made an improbable shot at the buzzer at Madison Square Garden in New York to send the game to overtime. Then he made a choking symbol with his hands, an homage to former Pacer Reggie Miller, who directed a similar gesture towards Spike Lee, a Knicks superfan, 31 years ago.
Knicks fans hated that Haliburton did that – but they won't forget it either.
This past week, in Game 1 of the Finals, Haliburton hit a jumper in the game's final second that won the game for the Pacers, who had trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter.
A performance like that, especially if it leads to a championship, just might be the kind that makes a superstar.
Haliburton walked into his post-game interview carrying a pair of his signature shoes from Puma, which he had worn during the game. Some reporters chuckled as he thumped the shoes down on the table, and Haliburton smiled sheepishly. But he wasn't going to let a chance for that much exposure slip by. NYTIMES

You've got to throw all the punches all night,' the guard said after Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the visiting Indiana Pacers on June 8. Gilgeous-Alexander and the rest of the Thunder threw plenty of haymakers, helping Oklahoma City to a 123-107 victory to even the best-of-seven series 1-1 going into Game 3 on June 11 in Indianapolis. That was a departure from Game 1 on June 5, when the Thunder led by 15 in the fourth quarter before Indiana came back to win the game 111-110 on a basket in the final second. Gilgeous-Alexander led the way on June 8 for Oklahoma City, scoring 34 with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals, and went 11 of 12 on free throws. There were plenty of areas of improvement from Game 1 for Thunder coach Mark Daigneault to point out after the victory. Oklahoma City had more success turning Indiana's turnovers into points at the other end, got better production from centre Chet Holmgren and forward Jalen Williams, had nearly double the assists after posting a season-low 13 in Game 1, and got an offensive spark off the bench from Alex Caruso and Aaron Wiggins. Daigneault said none of those alone were the difference maker, but all came together for a much better result for his team at Paycom Centre. 'We were just a little bit better in a lot of areas,' he said. The biggest stretch of the game came in the second quarter, when the Thunder ripped off a 19-2 run that was fuelled by both their defence and Gilgeous-Alexander's finishes on the other end. To that point, Oklahoma City's defence hadn't forced many turnovers and it hadn't taken advantage of the few it had caused. But during that big run, Gilgeous-Alexander scored seven of Oklahoma City's last nine points – all off Pacers' turnovers. Indiana quickly answered with a 10-0 run to make it 52-39, but never got closer than that 13-point deficit. The Thunder outscored the Pacers 26-12 in the paint in the first half and, for the series, now lead 88-68 in that category. 'They're the best team in the league at keeping the ball out of there... It's a tough task,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. In Game 1, WIlliams and Holmgren combined to shoot just eight of 28 from the floor, with Holmgren going just two-for-nine with six points. Holmgren looked much more settled early on in Game 2, hitting five consecutive shots after missing his first of the game. While Williams wasn't overly efficient, scoring 19 points on five-of-14 shooting, he did go eight-for-nine at the free-throw line and added five assists. Holmgren finished with 15 points while Caruso added 20 and Wiggins 18 off the bench. Tyrese Haliburton, the star of Game 1 after hitting the game-winning shot in the final second, led the Pacers with 17 points, though 12 of those came in the final quarter with the game fairly well in hand for Oklahoma City. Centre Myles Turner added 16 for Indiana, while forward Pascal Siakam scored 15 points on three-of-11 shooting. Over the first two games of the series, Haliburton has a combined three-for-nine with nine points before half-time. 'I have to figure out how to be better at the beginning of games. Kudos to them, they are a great defensive team but (I'll) watch the film and see where I can get better,' the guard said. A big part of the Thunder's defensive success against Haliburton has been thanks to forward Luguentz Dort. He has spent plenty of time guarding Haliburton but was on the opposite side of the floor for Haliburton's Game 1 winner. Dort finished with just three points, though Caruso gave Dort plenty of credit for the victory. He said: 'He knows the role he needs to play for us to win the series and pick up that trophy at the end.' Carlisle, meanwhile, brushed off an invitation to dwell on Haliburton's struggles in the early part of games, stressing that the Pacers had collective responsibility for scoring. 'There's a lot more to the game than just scoring. So everybody's got to do more. It starts with the best players,' Carlisle said. 'So people shouldn't just look at (Haliburton's) points and assists... that's not how our team is built. We are an ecosystem that has to function together, and stats – we've got to score enough points to win the game, but who gets them and how they get them, not important.' NBA Most Valuable Player Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 38 points in game one, once again led the way for Oklahoma City, who saw five players finish in double figures. Alex Caruso backed Gilgeous-Alexander with 20 points from the bench, including four three-pointers, with Aaron Wiggins bagging 18 after draining five-of-eight from outside the arc. Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton had a frustrating outing, giving up five turnovers in the face of an improved Oklahoma City defensive performance, while being restricted to 17 points. Alcaraz-Sinner French Open final scaled new heights, say ex-champions
PARIS - Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner took tennis to a level above that reached by even the sport's golden generation during their spellbinding French Open final on June 8, according to a host of former Roland Garros champions. Spaniard Alcaraz, 22, saved three successive match points as he hit back from two sets down to win 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-2) in front of a mesmerised Paris crowd. At five hours and 29 minutes it was the longest final at Roland Garros, smashing the previous record set by Sweden's Mats Wilander when he beat Guillermo Vilas in 1982. "The level at the end was absolutely ridiculous," Wilander, analysing the final for broadcaster TNT, said. 'I cannot believe we will have this rivalry. They have taken our sport to another level. I never thought I'd say that after the big three – Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal) and Novak (Djokovic) – but it's actually faster than ever and a level that is hard to believe.' Between them the players struck 123 winners and the quality was unrelenting as the final swayed one way and then another as they went toe-to-toe. The final points tally was 193-192 in Sinner's favour but he fell agonisingly short of becoming the first Italian man to win the claycourt title since Adriano Panatta in 1976. "I've seen Federer and Nadal and they played a couple of good finals but nothing comes close to this," Wilander said. "I thought 'this is not possible' they're playing at a pace that is not human. These are two of the best athletes the human race can put forward and they happen to be tennis players. I'm not speechless often but what a wonderful day." It was the first Grand Slam final meeting between the two Gen X trailblazers who have now scooped seven out of the last eight Grand Slam titles and with Sinner only 23, they look set to create a rivalry as compelling as those between Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. "The first final between these two. Celestial tennis from Alcaraz in that final tie breaker," said another former French Open champion Jim Courier, who commentated on the match for TNT. "There are days that tennis players don't forget." Seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe said both would have beaten record 14-time French Open champion and claycourt king Nadal at his peak. "You would make a serious argument with both guys that they would be favoured to beat Nadal, at his best," the American said. "These two guys right now, it's like when you watch the NBA and you say nobody could be better than Michael Jordan. The tennis level right now is higher than I've ever seen." Former Roland Garros winner Andre Agassi also sounded an ominous warning for anyone hoping to dethrone Alcaraz at Wimbledon where this year he will seek a hat-trick of titles. "Alcaraz's best surface to me, shockingly would be between here and Wimbledon. I'd actually say grass might be his best surface," the American, who presented the trophy, said. "I mean, you gotta remember this guy has defence and speed like Novak, if not more. He has feel like Federer, you could argue at times if not more. He has RPMs in pace like Rafa.
