Drogheda United's expulsion from Conference League confirmed as court appeal fails
Drogheda United
have lost their appeal against their expulsion from the Uefa Conference League to the Court for Arbitration for Sport.
Drogheda have been excluded from Tuesday's Uefa Conference League first round qualifier draw, ahead of the opening fixtures in July, because The Trivela Group, a US investment firm, owns a majority stake in the Louth club and Danish side Silkeborg IF.
Under Uefa laws 'no individual or legal entity' can control two teams competing in the same European competition.
Silkeborg secured their place over Kevin Doherty's side as they finished higher in the Danish league last season than Drogheda's ninth-placed finish in the League of Ireland.

'It is with great heartbreak and disbelief that we inform you we have lost our appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,' the club said in a statement.
'After months of engagement, constructive dialogue, countless hours of legal preparation, and multiple proposals based on frameworks that have been accepted in the past, we have come up short. Despite genuine and vocal support across the football world, the ruling did not fall in our favour. We are heartbroken by the outcome.'
As a result, Drogheda are set to lose out on a minimum €525,000 in Uefa prize money, despite qualifying for the Conference League by beating Derry City in the FAI Cup final last November.
Neither Derry nor any other Irish club can replace Drogheda, and join Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic in Tuesday's draw as they missed the deadline for a Uefa licence.

Shelbourne end St Pats' unbeaten home record thanks to Ali Coote goal
League of Ireland Premier Division: St Patrick's Athletic 0 Shelbourne 1 (Coote 10) Ali Coote's early goal ended St Patrick's Athletic year-long unbeaten home record in the league to reignite Shelbourne 's tenuous title retention hopes as they beat the Inchicore side for the second time this season. The result, only the champions' third win in 12 games, moves Damien Duff's side level on points with fourth-placed St Patrick's, though still 12 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers who came from behind to beat Drogheda United 2-1. St Pats' worrying form thus continues as they've now failed to win any of their last three games at Richmond Park and have one victory in five. READ MORE With five changes from Friday's home defeat to Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne enjoyed plenty of early possession and were deservedly ahead from a sweeping attack on 10 minutes. Skipper Mark Coyle, Harry Wood and Evan Caffrey were involved before Tyreke Wilson put the latter's cross back into the home area. With St Patrick's at sixes and sevens, Coote's shot took a deflection off Tom Grivosti to wrong-foot goalkeeper Joseph Anang and find the net for his third goal of the season. Shelbourne maintained their positive start as St Patrick's laboured to get a foothold in the game. It was the 23rd minute before Saints threatened for the first time to give their restless fans some cheer. A surge forward from right-back by Ryan McLaughlin set it up with Aidan Keena helping Simon Power's cross on to Jay McClelland. Sam Bone showed good defensive instinct to get his body in the way to deflect the shot out for the game's first corner. With St Patrick's finally in the game, Conor Kearns was worked for the first time when having to react acrobatically to turn an inswinging ball from Jake Mulraney round a post before Kian Leavy forced a third corner in quick succession with a deflected shot from distance. But there was a let-off for St Patrick's on 34 minutes when Shelbourne striker Sean Boyd, starting for the first time in two months, sliced tamely wide dead in front of goal after incisive approach play by Evan Caffrey who had worked a one-two with Wood on the right. Clearly unhappy with his team's first half showing, Stephen Kenny made three changes from the resumption with Axel Sjoberg, Barry Baggley and Mason Melia replacing McLaughlin, Anto Breslin and Mulraney. It duly injected more energy and purpose to the home side as they chased the game. Shelbourne had three corners to defend in the opening minutes of the half while Kearns was then forced into a diving save from a Keena drive. The visitors' rearguard remained steadfast, however, as St Patrick's upped the tempo. Substitute Zach Elbouzedi had a close range effort bravely blocked while Jamie Lennon shaved the crossbar from 20 yards. In the key moment of the second half five minutes from time, Kearns made the save of the game to deny Baggley following Elbouzedi's surging run from deep as St Patrick's 17-game unbeaten home run in the league came to an end. Aaron Greene scored a 74th-minute winner as Shamrock Rovers beat Drogheda at United Park to make it seven wins in eight games to stretch their lead at the top of the table to nine points. It closed a bad day for Drogheda who, earlier in the afternoon, had it confirmed that they had lost their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on being denied participation in this season's Conference League qualifiers due to being in breach of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, also losing out on a minimum of €525,000 in prize money. Drogheda started well with George Cooper putting them ahead after just four minutes before Rovers levelled three minutes before half-time from Graham Burke's seventh goal of the season. St Patrick's Athletic: Anang; McLaughlin (Sjoberg, h-t), Redmond, Grivosti, Breslin (Baggley, h-t); Lennon, McClelland; Power, Leavy (Elbouzedi, 71), Mulraney (Melia, h-t); Keena (Carty, 85). Shelbourne: Kearns; Bone, Barrett, Ledwidge; Caffrey (Gannon, 74), Lunney (Kelly, 70), Coyle, Wood, Wilson (Norris, 74); Coote (Chapman, 60); Boyd (Martin, 70). Referee: Paul Norton (Dublin). Drogheda United's day of woe continues against Shamrock Rovers
Drogheda United had a day to forget on and off the pitch as they lost 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers at home. Just hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed their appeal to overturn UEFA'S decision to expel them from the UEFA Conference League due to multi-club ownership regulations, this defeat left them clinging onto a top-three spot in the Premier Division. Goals from Grahm Burke and Aaron Greene – neither strangers to finding the net against the Drogs – won the game for in-form Rovers, who have a nine-point lead at the summit now. On an evening at Sullivan and Lambe Park that had a very peculiar feel to it, Drogheda could not find a result to salve their European pain. Kevin Doherty was without both Elicha Ahui and Owen Lambe so Kieran Cruise – formerly of Rovers – made his full league debut. Ryan Brennan and Warren Davis were left out as the Drogs shuffled their pack on an emotive evening. Stephen Bradley went even further, making seven changes from their victory over champions Shelbourne on Friday that maintained their six-point lead at the summit. With only Adam Matthews absent through injury, the Rovers boss enjoys a luxury in squad depth no other side in the country can compete with. Lee Grace, Dylan Watts and Burke were among the frontline players brought back into the starting XI. Neil Doyle got the game underway a little over two hours after it was confirmed that Drogheda would not take their place in Wednesday's draw for the second qualifying round in Nyon. Club officials were due to fly to Switzerland to attend the draw at UEFA HQ but those plans, and those of United supporters planning to follow their team on the continent next month, have been curtailed. The club statement issued on Monday afternoon struck tones both apologetic and defiant. There was no sense that the Drogs were feeling sorry for themselves in the early stages of the match. Roared on by a home crowd who sang and cheered with gusto, including a chant cursing European football's governing body, they began like a team hellbent on showing they could compete with a team like Rovers who qualified for the Conference League knockout stages last season. George Cooper scored his first Drogs goal inside four minutes, rising high to meet Shane Farrell's corner and plant a header into the net. He left marker Joshua Honohan on the ground en route to connecting with the delivery. The hosts were putting their bodies on the line at the other end too. A series of well-timed defensive headers and blocks denied Rovers an immediate route back into the game. Luke Dennison made a fine save from Trevor Clarke before Burke and Watts had sights of goal too. Farrell and Douglas James-Taylor went mightily close to another Drogs goal but Ed McGinty saved from both, either side of Burke's leveller. Andy Quinn was penalised for handball – well spotted by assistant referee Emmett Dynan – and Burke drove a free-kick through the wall and into the bottom corner. Roversw were deserving of their equaliser as they asked plenty of questions of the Drogheda defence. Those were all answered until the 73rd minute when Greene found the winner. A well-worked Hoops move ended in Danny Mandroiu feeding the striker and he beat the offside trap and then Dennison from 12 yards. Only Warren Davis' header late on was close to restoring parity. Drogheda assistant Daire Doyle and goalkeeping coach Aaron Shanahan were red carded in injury time as tempers flared on the sideline. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; George Cooper (Aaron Harper-Bailey, 71), Conor Keeley, Andrew Quinn; Kieran Cruise, Luke Heeney, Shane Farrell, Conor Kane; Darragh Markey (Ryan Brennan, 56); Douglas James-Taylor (Warren Davis, 66), Thomas Oluwa. Shamrock Rovers: Ed McGinty; Lee Grace, Roberto Lopes, Joshua Honohan; Cory O'Sullivan (Jack Byrne, 66), Matthew Healy, Darragh Nugent (Danny Mandroiu, 46), Dylan Watts (Michael Noonan, 67), Trevor Clarke; Graham Burke (Daniel Cleary, 79), Aaron Greene.

Shamrock Rovers extend Premier Division lead and pile misery on Drogs
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Drogheda United 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 Shamrock Rovers piled on the misery on what turned out to be a doubly devastating day for Drogheda United with a victory that extends their lead at the top of the Premier Division to nine points. Drogheda's Uefa Conference League fate was sealed earlier in the afternoon when the Court of Arbitration of Sport upheld Uefa's decision to expel the club from the third-tier competition on multi-club ownership grounds. Graham Burke and Aaron Greene's goals in each half condemned United to further disappointment and helped the Hoops extend their unbeaten run to 10 games now. George Cooper's first goal in a Drogheda shirt was as emotive a goal as Sullivan & Lambe Park has seen all season long. The on-loan Mansfield Town defender rose highest in the penalty and planted a header into the net after Shane Farrell's corner from the left. That handed Drogheda a deserved lead against Stephen Bradley's visitors. The home team roared out of the traps just two hours after their European expulsion was confirmed. Kevin Doherty would have had to deliver one of the more difficult team-talks of his time in charge of the Drogs. Much of his squad will have signed on for the 2025 season – or joined in the off-season – on the basis that a European adventure awaited. Instead, their July schedule looks bare now. Only the visits of Galway United in the league and Crumlin United in the FAI Cup are pencilled in now. Ironically, this match had been a fixture specifically arranged with both Drogheda and Rovers' Conference League obligations in mind. How United will wish fixture their calendar still warranted a reshuffle. Rovers were level in controversial circumstances shortly before the break. Not for the first time on Monday, the Drogs felt they were the victim of an unjust decision. Assistant Emmett Dynan flagged for an Andy Quinn handball that was missed by seemingly everyone else inside Sullivan & Lambe Park – including referee Neil Doyle. The official showed Quinn a yellow card and Graham Burke fired a free kick from just outside the area through the wall and into the net, low to goalkeeper Luke Dennison's right. Earlier, Drogheda's Californian goalkeeper had saved brilliantly from Trevor Clarke and then claimed Dylan Watts's effort, with a Quinn block denying Dylan Watts in between. United themselves were playing with an intensity and hunger that was befitting of the occasion. Backed by a packed-out home crowd, whose chants included a song that cursed European football's governing body, they were keen to demonstrate they could hold their own against a Rovers side who made the Conference League knockout stages last season. Farrell and Douglas James-Taylor both forced fine saves from Ed McGinty but the hosts defended resolutely too in the face of increased pressure from the in-form league leaders. With three defenders – Elicha Ahui, Owen Lambe and James Bolger – already out, United were dealt another setback when centre back Cooper had to withdraw in the second half. Captain for the evening Darragh Markey succumbed to injury too. Just as they did when the sides last met on Boyneside in March, Rovers came from a goal down to lead courtesy of Burke and Greene. The latter finished smartly when played in by substitute Danny Mandroiu. The offside flag offered no respite, with Kieran Cruise playing the striker onside. Drogheda assistant Daire Doyle and goalkeeping coach Aaron Shanahan were red carded in injury time as tempers flared on the sideline. Drogheda United: Dennison; Cooper (Harper-Bailey, 71), Keeley, Quinn; Cruise, Heeney, Farrell, Kane; Markey (Brennan, 56); James-Taylor (Davis, 66), Oluwa. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; Grace, Lopes, Honohan; O'Sullivan (Byrne, 66), Healy, Nugent (Mandroiu, 46), Watts (Noonan, 67), Clarke (Grant, 76); Burke (Cleary, 79), Greene.
