Drogheda United's expulsion from Conference League confirmed as court appeal fails
Drogheda United
have lost their appeal against their expulsion from the Uefa Conference League to the Court for Arbitration for Sport.
Drogheda have been excluded from Tuesday's Uefa Conference League first round qualifier draw, ahead of the opening fixtures in July, because The Trivela Group, a US investment firm, owns a majority stake in the Louth club and Danish side Silkeborg IF.
Under Uefa laws 'no individual or legal entity' can control two teams competing in the same European competition.
Silkeborg secured their place over Kevin Doherty's side as they finished higher in the Danish league last season than Drogheda's ninth-placed finish in the League of Ireland.

'It is with great heartbreak and disbelief that we inform you we have lost our appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,' the club said in a statement.
'After months of engagement, constructive dialogue, countless hours of legal preparation, and multiple proposals based on frameworks that have been accepted in the past, we have come up short. Despite genuine and vocal support across the football world, the ruling did not fall in our favour. We are heartbroken by the outcome.'
As a result, Drogheda are set to lose out on a minimum €525,000 in Uefa prize money, despite qualifying for the Conference League by beating Derry City in the FAI Cup final last November.
Neither Derry nor any other Irish club can replace Drogheda, and join Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic in Tuesday's draw as they missed the deadline for a Uefa licence.

Drogheda United's day of woe continues against Shamrock Rovers
Drogheda United had a day to forget on and off the pitch as they lost 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers at home. Just hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed their appeal to overturn UEFA'S decision to expel them from the UEFA Conference League due to multi-club ownership regulations, this defeat left them clinging onto a top-three spot in the Premier Division. Goals from Grahm Burke and Aaron Greene – neither strangers to finding the net against the Drogs – won the game for in-form Rovers, who have a nine-point lead at the summit now. On an evening at Sullivan and Lambe Park that had a very peculiar feel to it, Drogheda could not find a result to salve their European pain. Kevin Doherty was without both Elicha Ahui and Owen Lambe so Kieran Cruise – formerly of Rovers – made his full league debut. Ryan Brennan and Warren Davis were left out as the Drogs shuffled their pack on an emotive evening. Stephen Bradley went even further, making seven changes from their victory over champions Shelbourne on Friday that maintained their six-point lead at the summit. With only Adam Matthews absent through injury, the Rovers boss enjoys a luxury in squad depth no other side in the country can compete with. Roversw were deserving of their equaliser as they asked plenty of questions of the Drogheda defence. Those were all answered until the 73rd minute when Greene found the winner. A well-worked Hoops move ended in Danny Mandroiu feeding the striker and he beat the offside trap and then Dennison from 12 yards. Only Warren Davis' header late on was close to restoring parity. SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Drogheda United 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 Shamrock Rovers piled on the misery on what turned out to be a doubly devastating day for Drogheda United with a victory that extends their lead at the top of the Premier Division to nine points. Drogheda's Uefa Conference League fate was sealed earlier in the afternoon when the Court of Arbitration of Sport upheld Uefa's decision to expel the club from the third-tier competition on multi-club ownership grounds. Graham Burke and Aaron Greene's goals in each half condemned United to further disappointment and helped the Hoops extend their unbeaten run to 10 games now. George Cooper's first goal in a Drogheda shirt was as emotive a goal as Sullivan & Lambe Park has seen all season long. The on-loan Mansfield Town defender rose highest in the penalty and planted a header into the net after Shane Farrell's corner from the left. That handed Drogheda a deserved lead against Stephen Bradley's visitors. The home team roared out of the traps just two hours after their European expulsion was confirmed. Kevin Doherty would have had to deliver one of the more difficult team-talks of his time in charge of the Drogs. Much of his squad will have signed on for the 2025 season – or joined in the off-season – on the basis that a European adventure awaited. Instead, their July schedule looks bare now. Only the visits of Galway United in the league and Crumlin United in the FAI Cup are pencilled in now. Ironically, this match had been a fixture specifically arranged with both Drogheda and Rovers' Conference League obligations in mind. Not for the first time on Monday, the Drogs felt they were the victim of an unjust decision. Assistant Emmett Dynan flagged for an Andy Quinn handball that was missed by seemingly everyone else inside Sullivan & Lambe Park – including referee Neil Doyle. The official showed Quinn a yellow card and Graham Burke fired a free kick from just outside the area through the wall and into the net, low to goalkeeper Luke Dennison's right. Earlier, Drogheda's Californian goalkeeper had saved brilliantly from Trevor Clarke and then claimed Dylan Watts's effort, with a Quinn block denying Dylan Watts in between. United themselves were playing with an intensity and hunger that was befitting of the occasion. Backed by a packed-out home crowd, whose chants included a song that cursed European football's governing body, they were keen to demonstrate they could hold their own against a Rovers side who made the Conference League knockout stages last season. Farrell and Douglas James-Taylor both forced fine saves from Ed McGinty but the hosts defended resolutely too in the face of increased pressure from the in-form league leaders.
