Driving to a game: Pune couple gives sports retail a winning edge

Shortly before a badminton tournament in Baner, a player discovered that his racket was broken. He called up Aditya Singh Jadhon and requested a racket of the same model and brand as he had a match. Jadhon, who lives in NIBM, drove directly to the venue and, within an hour, delivered the racket.
Another time, it was a family that was getting ready to travel on holiday when they realised that they needed football and badminton equipment. It was 4 am when they called Jadhon. This time, he drove to the Pune railway station with the gear.
If you see a car packed with sports equipment driving through the traffic on Pune streets, you can be sure it is Jadhon and/or his partner Neha Singh out on a delivery. The couple has founded a unique company, Sports on The Wheel, which is dedicated to delivering sports equipment. 'I still remember the date, August 20, 2021, when our startup set out for the first time in the heavy rain and sold out all the goods,' says Jadhon.
'Both of us come from a sports background and are ardent sports lovers. I played badminton and was selected for the nationals from school. But, like many families, mine insisted more on studies. So, though I enjoyed sports, I couldn't pursue it. But, I always wanted to do something with sports,' says Singh.
Jadhon, who belongs to India's capital city of exam coaching centres, Kota, Rajasthan, was a swimmer, badminton player and captain of the school cricket team. Long after he became an engineer – he is a project manager with a major IT company – Jadhon still felt the adrenaline rush of sports.
It was after the lockdown that the couple noticed that the people of Pune had started concentrating on their health. Sports on The Wheel tied up with a Japanese sports equipment manufacturer to supply a range of equipment.
The company is driven by passion and an unconventional business model. It has created thousands of clients in Pune over social media, personal relationship-building exercises, and a network of coaches and players all the way from the housing society level to the top. Their market seems to live on WhatsApp groups, which are kept updated on the locations that the car, laden with cricket bats, an assortment of balls, shuttlecocks, rackets, gloves, and pads, among others, would be visiting on a given day.
'Our model is based on the things that people want from us. One of the major factors for all Indians is the cost of a product. We have the concept that we don't own any shop. Everything we have, we put in our car. That way, we minimise costs. We don't have rental and other overheads. With a brick-and-mortar store, we would have been confined to one area. People would have to come to us. Now, since we are free to move around, we just deliver wherever people want us to go,' says Jadhon.
Singh adds that they never push sell or upsell; in fact, they do the reverse. Every so often, they encounter people who want to start playing at a club but feel the social pressure to invest in high-end equipment. 'We talk to them about why, since they are beginners, they should buy a basic racket to learn with. An amateur player might crash a racket or break it, so it is pointless to invest Rs 10,000 on a racket when a Rs 2,000 one would do,' she says. Many clients keep coming back to them even after moving overseas.
It is, possibly, the sports gene that makes the couple aim for passion over profit – and prove that this is a winning formula. Sports on The Wheel has spread beyond Pune. It is supplying to Mumbai and even sending equipment to other parts of India, the UK and Saudi Arabia.
'We can now say that we are making a profit as well. In the earlier years, there was much profit, but we were happy doing what we were doing,' says Singh. Whether it is a corporate tournament, a club match or to motivate a child before a big game, a lot of people call up Sports on The Wheel. 'People in sports are very enthusiastic and we enjoy meeting them,' says Jadhon.

Over the last few years, there has been plenty of talk in chess about an Indian take over at the top of the rankings. There are currently four Indian players among the top 10 spots in the FIDE ratings and a 19-year-old from Chennai, Gukesh, occupies the world champion's throne. But Fabiano Caruana has said on his podcast after the Norway Chess tournament that there is still time for Indian prodigies like Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi taking over the top spots in the sport from the likes of world no 1 Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura and Caruana himself. The recently-ended Norway Chess tournament was a clash of generations in that sense with Carlsen, Caruana and Nakamura representing their generation while Gukesh and Erigaisi were flying the flag for Indian prodigies. Gukesh even went into the final day of the event with a chance to win the title, trailing Carlsen by half a point. But in the end, it was Carlsen who won his 7th title at Stavanger while Caruana pipped Gukesh to second spot. Nakamura was fourth ahead of Erigaisi. Caruana believes that the Indian stars are great players, but they're 'not scary' yet. '(These Indians players are) very strong. I think that we'll be competing on more or less equal terms for a while. But I don't find them scary yet. Whatsoever!' Caruana said on his C Squared Podcast. At Norway Chess, Caruana beat Gukesh in the final game to deliver a cruel heartbreak on the Indian teenager who had started the day with hopes of winning the tournament. In the previous game, the duo had drawn their classical duel. Caruana had beaten Arjun once at the tournament and lost the second time with colours reversed to the Indian. Caruana, who finds himself on 4th spot in the FIDE June ratings between Erigaisi and Gukesh, then explained why the world of chess was unlikely to see a changing of guard in the near future. 'If Levon Aronian is 10 years older than me and he's competing on completely equal terms with these young guys… or Hikaru, who's five years older than me, and it feels like he's still a stronger player than these young guys for the most part… then why would there be this theory that they're going to take over anytime soon. Especially if you consider that Magnus is, I would say, clearly stronger than them,' he said. He praised the Indians as fighters, but pointed out that they were giving their opponents plenty of chances too in games. 'When I play for example Arjun or Gukesh, I do get this feeling — not just based on this Norway Chess tournament, but on many tournaments — that I can really outplay them very significantly and get a lot of winning chances. I don't think they can outplay me in the same way. Although they will get winning chances and then it's about some other factors. Really this is my honest opinion. It's not me trying to play them down or anything. I'm not doing that. They can definitely outperform me in various ways. But my feeling is that if it's a long match, they're great fighters, but they also give a lot of chances and (for them) it can be very frustrating to play against someone who doesn't give many chances.'

Indian compound archers set two under-21 World records in the qualification round of the Asia Cup Leg-2 in Singapore on Tuesday. The women's team, comprising Shanmukhi Naga Sai, Tejal Salve and Tanishka Nilkumar, scored 2101 to better the previous mark of 2076 set by Indian archers two years ago. Shanmukhi and Kushal Dalal, who topped women's and men's individual rankings with 706 and 714 points respectively, totalled 1420 to help India rewrite the record (1419) held by the USA since last year. In the individual events, Indians made it to both the men's and women's finals. Top seed Kushal booked his place in the men's individual compound final after a solid 147-143 win over Himu Bachhar of Bangladesh in the semifinals, confirming at least a silver medal. Meanwhile, India's 10th seed Sachin Chechi lost his semifinal to Australia's Joshua Machon and will face Bachhar in the bronze medal match. In the women's individual compound section, India is assured of a gold and silver as top-seeded Shanmukhi and second seed Tejal Salve will clash in an all-Indian final. Shanmukhi defeated Indonesia's Yurike Nina Bonita Pereira 145-139 in the semifinals, while Tejal, who shot 700 in qualification, overcame Malaysia's Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh 147-142 to set up the title clash. Podanur Station to be developed as second terminal over the next three years: Southern Railway General Manager

Development of Podanur Station as a second terminal will be carried out over the next three years, Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh said on Tuesday. A sum of ₹100 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose. The project at Podanur Station envisages start and stoppage of trains, as in Coimbatore Junction Railway Station, Mr. Singh said, after inspecting the works in progress under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme at the station, where the works for improving passenger conveniences were initiated at a cost of ₹ 24 crore in 2023. Mr. Singh took stock of the progress in the works on installation of lifts, re-laying of platforms and other passenger conveniences. Accompanied by Panna Lal, Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division, and N. Ganga Raju, Chief Project Manager, Mr. Singh proceeded to Coimbatore North after a stopover at the Coimbatore Junction Railway Station. At Coimbatore North, the senior officials inspected the works on lifts, waiting rooms, extension of platforms, and other modernisation works for passenger convenience and comfort. The officials will also be inspecting the Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty railway stations that are also being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme on Wednesday and Thursday, sources added. Earlier, the officials inspected the Tiruppur Railway Station to take stock of the pace of works under way at a cost of ₹ 15 crore. Works on re-laying of platforms, construction of retiring rooms, air-conditioned waiting rooms, escalators, lifts and passenger reservation centre are in progress. The officials exuded hope that the works will be completed over the next six months.
