Magnus Carlsen says Gukesh won't be favourite in World Championship match vs Hikaru, Caruana, Nepomniachtchi
Magnus Carlsen believes that recently-anointed world chess champion Gukesh Dommaraju will not be a favourite to retain the crown next year if one of the old-timers like Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana or Ian Nepomniachtchi earn the right to challenge the Indian teenager in the next World Championship. After defeating Caruana in round 9 to surge into the lead in the Norway Chess standings on Friday morning, Carlsen was asked if Hikaru could win the Candidates and beat Gukesh (in the World Championship)? 'I think if Hikaru or Fabi (Caruana) — or probably Nepo (Ian Nepomniachtchi) for that matter — win the Candidates they would be, at the moment, they would be a favorite in a match against Gukesh. Hikaru's come close twice. He's still extremely good so there's no reason why he couldn't, Carlsen told Chess24 in an interview. Carlsen has excused himself from the race to earn a shot at the world champion's crown. He won the world championship five times without losing once, starting from 2013, but then walked away from the throne without fighting for it. ALSO READ: Magnus Carlsen says loss to Gukesh ended his dream of playing really good tournament Since he left, Ding Liren and Gukesh have claimed the crown. Now Carlsen believes that his contemporaries like Nakamura, Caruana and Nepomniachtchi will be favourites against Gukesh. In one of the only tournaments he plays in classical chess — Norway Chess — Carlsen finds himself one game away from winning the title after Thursday's round 9. His closest competitor is Gukesh, who beat Carlsen recently which led to the irate World No 1 to smash the table in anger. Carlsen had since apologised but the incident has made headlines globally. On Friday, Carlsen plays another member of India's golden generation, Arjun Erigaisi. 'Arjun will always want to fight. So I am prepared for a fight for sure,' Carlsen told Chess24. When asked how he was going to prepare for game against Arjun, Carlsen said: 'It's hard to say. Playing Arjun is a little bit like playing even Ivanchuk back in the day. It's just somebody who doesn't really play for a lot of draws. Just is out to get you. So playing with black, I'm sure we'll get some sort of complicated game and I'll try and do my best from there.'

Why is Matthew Tkachuk so sure the 2025 Stanley Cup will be better than last year's intense finale?
Hockey fans are once again treated to a blockbuster showdown, as the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers clash in a rematch of last season's epic Stanley Cup Final. Only this time, both teams are stronger, hungrier, and ready to write a new chapter in what's fast becoming one of the NHL's most thrilling rivalries. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now What does Matthew Tkachuk know that makes him bet on a better Stanley Cup in 2025? In 2024, the Panthers made history by capturing their first-ever Stanley Cup title, but not without a fight. Despite storming to a 3–0 series lead, they had to survive a gritty push from Edmonton before sealing a narrow 2–1 win in a nail-biting Game 7. Now, just a year later, the hockey world finds these two powerhouses on a collision course again, and early signs suggest this might be even more electric. The opening game set the tone, with Edmonton taking a 4–3 win in overtime—thanks to Leon Draisaitl's clutch goal—marking the first time since 1990 that the Oilers have led a Stanley Cup Final series. That year also happens to be the last time they hoisted the Cup, making this moment all the more meaningful for Oil Country. NHL Playoff Highlights | Panthers vs. Oilers | SCF Gm 1 | June 4, 2025 Florida star Matthew Tkachuk believes fans are in for a treat this time around. 'They're better. We're better. It's going to be a great series,' Tkachuk told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic on Thursday. His confidence speaks volumes about how far both teams have come in the past year. Indeed, offseason moves and trade deadline acquisitions have bolstered both rosters. Florida landed high-impact veterans Seth Jones and Brad Marchand, while Edmonton reinforced their blue line by bringing in Jake Walman. These tweaks have paid dividends, evident in the sheer quality of hockey being displayed. While Edmonton draws first blood in this rematch, the Panthers are far from rattled. With experienced leaders and a deep bench, they know this series is just heating up. If Game 1 was any indication, fans can expect an unforgettable ride as two of the NHL's best go head-to-head once again. Also Read:

Brad Marchand's sudden future doubts ignite Leafs, Oilers bidding war and leave Panthers in limbo
As the Florida Panthers battle the Edmonton Oilers in the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, whispers about Brad Marchand's NHL future are growing louder—and more expensive. After a standout playoff run that reignited his reputation, the 36-year-old veteran is reportedly attracting major interest across the league, with teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers emerging as potential suitors. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Brad Marchand proves he still has gas left in the tank during playoff surge Brad Marchand, once the heart of the Boston Bruins, reinvented himself this season with the Panthers after a surprising late-career move. The gritty winger seamlessly fit into Florida's hard-hitting system, helping the team surge through the playoffs. He played a pivotal role in narrowing Toronto's series lead with a dramatic overtime goal in Game 3—his fifth game-winning postseason goal against the Leafs. But despite his impact, Marchand's time in Florida may be short-lived. Insider reports reveal interest from multiple teams, including big spenders Brad Marchand (Imagn Images) According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, 'Brad Marchand will have plenty of teams interested, some willing to offer $8M per.' The Panthers, he added, are 'unlikely to be able to keep him.' That quote has stirred intense speculation that the Leafs or Oilers could go 'all in' on Marchand when free agency opens on July 1. TSN's Bryan Hayes and Jeff O'Neil even endorsed the idea during a recent discussion. '100%-110%. I confirm it,' Hayes declared. O'Neil added, 'Yes, I confirm it. Why not?'—a dramatic shift in tone for fans who once viewed Marchand as Toronto's biggest playoff nemesis. Brad Marchand hints this could be his last Stanley Cup Final appearance Amid the rumors, Marchand himself has been reflective. Speaking to Amalie Benjamin, he acknowledged, 'Statistically, it'll most likely be my last one. Hopefully it's not, but that's just how this game works.' He echoed that sentiment with Elliotte Friedman, saying, 'I've thought about... Tired of too many ads? go ad free now potential situations. But till you really know what options are like, it's all theoretical.' Still, Marchand is focused on the present. 'I kind of parked all that, and I'm just especially right now just being in the moment and enjoying it,' he said. Wherever he lands next, one thing is clear: Marchand isn't done making waves.
