This epic Utah camping trip is perfect for first-timers, park lovers
I unzipped my tent just as the early morning sun hit the sandstone buttes of Big Bend Campground in Moab, Utah, illuminating their vivid umber and amber stratas. It was an incredible view to wake up to – and a first for a newbie camper like myself. Like many others, I've seen images of the Colorado Plateau's ancient arches, buttes, fins and towering pinnacles before, but actually being in their presence is a different experience. From seeing their massive scale up close to how some rock formations seemingly defy gravity, the nature around Moab, Utah is captivating. On a three-night Women's Best of Moab Basecamp Tour in Moab with Wildland Trekking, an Intrepid Travel Company, I had the chance to fully immerse myself in the stunning red rocks landscape of the Southwest. In just a few days, I learned that Moab makes for the perfect home base to explore the natural wonders of such an iconic landscape. Mold, rodent infestations: Report finds Yosemite's hotels in disrepair "(The landscapes are) incredible, awe-inspiring and wonder-inspiring. You feel like you're on another planet, right?" said my Wildland Trekking guide Michelle Beebe, who has been working in Moab for the last three years. "The energy here is spectacular and every time you come back here, it's just like something that comes over your body." (She attributes that to the iron oxide in the red rocks, for those drawn to spiritual energy.) My brief camping stint with Wildland Trekking allowed me to fully appreciate Moab's nature while also giving me a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a notion that many other campers can relate to. In Campspot's 2025 trend survey, 82% of the 2,594 respondents said they "seek solace" in camping when feeling "overwhelmed by modern life." Camping continues to be a favorite escape for millions of Americans, even as inflation can make it seem like other types of travel are more costly, according to Dyrt's 2025 Camping Report Presented by Toyota Trucks, which was conducted in late 2024. The report also found that 81.1 million Americans went camping last year, with 5.8 million doing it for the first time, slightly down from 84.3 million in 2023. CAMPING GEAR DEALS: Shop my Amazon wishlist: Save on editor-approved camping gear Here's what travelers should know about camping in Moab. Why should travelers visit Moab? Moab is a visual treat, but this place has layers – literally. The geological story of time is told through the ancient rock formations, from when the landscape was underwater during the lower Triassic Period to many years of wind and rock erosion that shaped the striking formations and strata. Even today, the stunning rock formations that make Moab such an iconic landscape are still being eroded, so the arches and pinnacles won't always be here. "It's a great place to start just to capture your imagination, right?" said Beebe. "Those arches, the formations, it really piques your interest (if) it's something that you haven't really experienced before. So it makes you want to come back for more." Traveling with a guide made it easier to navigate the park crowds and gave me a deeper insight of the history and geology of the area. The two parks we went to were Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, just two of Utah's Mighty 5 national parks (the other include Zion National Park, Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park.) We also trekked Fisher Towers, the impressive dark red sandstone monuments beloved by rock climbers, which are considered public lands with the Bureau of Land Management. What is it like to camp in Moab? My base camp was at Big Bend Bend Recreation Site, which belongs to the Bureau of Land Management. Perched along the Colorado River, the campsite is centrally located near trails, rivers, and routes perfect for mountain biking, whitewater rafting, off-roading, driving and hiking. By car, Arches National Park is a 15-minute drive, with Canyonlands National Park about an hour away, and the town of Moab is 30 minutes away. The campsite included pit latrines and a dumpster, but no running water. (We had a chance to shower at a recreation center halfway through the trip.) CAMPING ESSENTIALS: I go camping every year. Here are 10 essentials I suggest buying You can also book a campsite within Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, but being in Big Bend made it easy to access both parks. What is it like to camp with Wildland Trekking? Wildland Trekking's camping trips are all-inclusive for an introductory taste of Moab, especially for first-time campers or visitors. Although we did plenty of outdoor exploring, the days never felt rushed. We could sip coffee and have breakfast in the morning, and after hitting the trails, got downtime back at basecamp in the evenings. Each day totaled six to eight miles of hiking, either from one long hike or hitting multiple highlights in the parks. What's included with Wildland Trekking trips: While all you have to do is essentially show up, it's still important to pack some items that'll make your camping experience easier. Here's what I recommend: What is the weather like in Moab? Although Moab is stunning year-round, the spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures plus fewer crowds. In the summer, the arid high desert can get quite hot, reaching temperatures of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Beebe, our visit in late May was perfect timing. Although we experienced chilly mornings and nights along with a bit of rain, we did have to wear sweaters and jackets, but it never felt too hot while we were on the trails. Once the sun came in, hiking felt pretty comfortable. The rain also brought the desert to life, with apparently rare swaths of green and wildflowers carpeting the landscape. Typically, Moab receives around 10 inches of rain a year. How much does Wildland Trekking camping trips cost? My Moab basecamp trip costs between $1,985 and $2,045, depending on the trip dates. Wildland Trekking also offers other kinds of outdoors trips, from guided backpacking tours, guided llama hikes, show shoe hikes and ones where you stay in an inn or lodge. Displaced by Wildfires, the Palisades Community Finds a Slice of Home as Cinque Terre West Reopens in Venice
As the Palisades Fire burned through the Santa Monica Mountains on January 7, 2025, Marlo and chef Gianbattista 'Gianba' Vinzoni were on a flight approaching Los Angeles International Airport. They watched massive plumes of smoke darken the sky from the window of their plane, which was the last flight allowed to land before the airport closed for the night. Since the devastating fires, the couple, who previously lived with their two children in the Palisades, relocated their family to multiple temporary rentals before settling in Venice. They were forced to close their longtime Palisades restaurant, which was severely damaged, and eventually operated out of Venice ghost kitchen the Colony on Lincoln Boulevard. But as of June 23, the Vinzonis have reopened their locally loved restaurant Cinque Terre West at 523 Rose Avenue in Venice, in the space previously occupied by Bluestone Lane. For Palisades wildfire survivors, Cinque Terre West's reopening is a welcome sight. Displaced Palisades resident Andre Ulloa was instrumental in helping the Vinzonis bring their restaurant back to life. Ulloa, who works in the financial sector and formerly served as CEO of Yamashiro in Hollywood for 15 years, invested in the restaurant so the couple could reopen. Ulloa finds it comforting to see Cinque Terre West's return. 'Marlo and Gianba were able to make deep connections with the Palisades,' says Ulloa. 'The new location still has that aura they captured in the Palisades. With so many residents relocating to Venice, they're providing a slice of nostalgia because it was such a special space for the many generations who lived in the Palisades.' Regulars will find the same menu with branzino and tuna shallot crudos, grilled octopus salad, pan-seared Chilean sea bass, pizzas, and Gianba's homemade lobster pasta. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., daily brunch and lunch include a classic American breakfast as well as omelettes, Italian croissants and focaccia made by Gianba, breakfast sandwiches, and salads. Gianba also makes Cinque Terre's gluten-free pizza crust and focaccia, and serves gluten-free pasta as an alternative to the standard pasta he and his team make in house. The two transformed the former Bluestone Lane into their own personal space. The 1,200-square-foot restaurant seats 50 with a sunny patio on this busy stretch of Rose Avenue next to Venice Beach Wines and modern Mexican restaurant Chulita. The couple took weeks to clean out the space, repaint, and add distinctly coastal Italian artwork to make it a bright, inviting dining room with a deep ocean blue exterior. They're working with the city in hopes of adding the established al fresco sidewalk dining space, but also have the front patio with new floors for diners to nest on. Before opening on Monday, Marlo and Gianba found a loyal stream of customers who continued to ask them when they would open. Many of these regulars either moved permanently or are waiting for repairs on their Palisades homes. The Vinzonis won't be able to move back into their Palisades condo for at least a year. Both believe they persevered in these last six months because of the inherent up-and-down nature of restaurant ownership. 'We always find a way to keep going and restarting,' says the Italian-born Gianba. 'I always tell everybody that if I ever have a heart attack, I'm not going to die right away.' 'I'll clean the plate, cook, serve, and then I can just collapse on the floor,' he adds, laughing. Cinque Terre West is open for brunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at 523 Rose Avenue, Venice, CA, 90291. Dinner is 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Friday until 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. See More:

These are the best airlines of 2025 – and no US carrier made the list. Here's why.
Skytrax recently released its World's Best Airline Awards of 2025 – also called the "Oscars of the aviation industry" – with Qatar Airways scoring the top spot for the ninth time and no U.S. airlines making the list. Since 1999, the aviation rankings organization has determined the annual awards based on results from the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey. For this year's list, the global survey was conducted from September 2024 to May 2025, with the winners announced on June 17. "We welcomed back a large number of previous winners and were also delighted to see new faces and airlines represented here today," said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, in a statement. "As is indicated by so many former winning airlines being present, quality consistency is clearly well recognised by customers when they vote for these airlines." Not only did Qatar Airways win World's Best Airline, but also Best Airline in the Middle East, World's Best Business Class and Best Business Class Airline Lounge. "This recognition is far more than an award, it is a celebration of the passion, precision and purpose that defines who we are as an airline," Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said in the release. Airlines based in the Middle East and Asia dominated the top 10, with many repeat winners like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates, while no U.S. carriers made it into the top 20. Best airlines of 2025 Here are the top 20 airlines of 2025, according to Skytrax: US carriers fail to make top 20 U.S. carriers were absent from a majority of the Skytrax awards. However, two made it onto lists: Delta Air Lines scored the Best Airline Staff Service in North America, and JetBlue Airways was the sixth Best Regional Airline for 2025. (Regional airline awards are for those with mostly domestic flights and international ones up to six hours.) "This isn't just a ranking problem. It's a reputation and business problem," said Anton Radchenko, aviation expert and founder of air passenger rights company AirAdvisor. "The reason U.S. airlines are failing to crack the top 10 isn't because they're incapable; it's because they're prioritizing margins over meaningful passenger experience." A 2024 report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found major U.S. airlines generating billions in revenue from charging "sky high junk fees," such as checked bags and seat assignments, to passengers. Between 2018 and 2023, seat reservation fees made a combined $12.4 billion for American, Delta, United, Frontier and Spirit. "U.S. carriers need to understand that international passengers and, increasingly, Americans too, expect more than just an on-time flight," said Radchenko, adding that they should invest in improving the traveler experience instead. "Travelers may not buy tickets based on awards, but they feel the difference, and they vote every day with their wallets and loyalty, he continued. "Until U.S. airlines close the gap on these fundamentals, we'll continue to see them locked out of the global top tier.'
