Michigan voters could decide future of daylight saving time on ballot

This Sunday, March 9, we turn our clocks one hour ahead for daylight saving time. But is the time change something we should continue or get rid of?
Michigan state Sen. Thomas Albert has introduced a bill that, if passed, would allow voters to decide.
"Time change is the worst," said Senator Albert.
To spring forward or fall back. What do you, Metro Detroiters, prefer?
"Let it stay light later (laughs) and let us enjoy the sun," said Thelma Oliver.
"Personally, I like to fall back. Get that extra hour of sleep," said Stephen Turner.
"I like more light because I'm getting older, and I can't see at night (laughs)," said Reshod Sanders.
Daylight saving time is approaching, and Albert is pushing for Michigan voters to decide its future.
"It's inconvenient; it's not healthy; there's no conclusive evidence that it provides any energy savings, which is the whole reason why this pretext of why we change the clocks twice a year," Albert said.
On Thursday, Albert introduced Senate Bill 126. If passed, it would put the question of whether we continue daylight saving time on the November ballot, leaving the time change in the hands of Michigan voters.
"What can we do? Well, federal law gives us two options. We can either stay on daylight saving time and flip the clock back and forth twice a year, or we can opt out and stay on standard time. Voters deserve a chance to decide on this issue," said Albert.
Corewell Health Sleep Center Medical Director Dr. Nader Mina says the time change hinders our sleep, which is essential to our health.
"Recommend adopting a standard time throughout the year rather than just going back and forth. Aligning the solar clock with our biological internal clock, or what we call a circadian clock, has a lot of health advantages for us," said Dr. Mina.
It is possible to adjust to daylight saving time. Dr. Mina says it takes about one week. He says to go to bed and wake up ten to fifteen minutes earlier each day, limit caffeine and screen time, and be sure to get enough rest.
"You can actually overcome negative effects that could happen. Bad quality of sleep can impair our immune system, so it makes us more susceptible to infections, makes our body weaker to fight viruses, elevated blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, strokes," Dr. Mina stated. "All adults should get somewhere between 7 to 8 hours of sleep with some variations. But this is actually different by age. So, if you're talking about teenagers, this should be between 8 to 10 hours of sleep. If you're talking toddlers, that's about 11 to 14 hours."
Senate Bill 126 still needs to be approved by the legislature before it can be put on the ballot.

Since wildfire smoke drifted south, she said her patients have seen much worse symptoms. But it's not just them. Canada wildfire smoke leaves West Michigan in a haze 'Even healthy people I think might notice some coughing, headaches, sore throat,' she said. 'All those conditions are gonna feel worse when the air quality's this bad.' Becker said that healthy individuals can experience those symptoms when the air quality is in the unhealthy range, like it was in West Michigan Thursday. Certain people are especially at risk, she said. That can include people over the age of 65, under the age of 18, those who are pregnant, those who have heart or lung disease and those who often work outdoors. Becker said you can notice the effects in minutes and the damage can be long-term. 'People have increased events with their heart and lungs up to three months after the event,' she said. 'People have more heart attacks, more heart rhythm problems, more . The effects of all this inflammatory bad stuff we breathe in last for months. Clean air is actually extremely important.' She recommended staying indoors if you can, keeping your windows shut and having a good air filter, preferably a HEPA filter. In Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, you can check exactly what the air quality is like in your neighborhood using . Air quality sensors are posted on poles at about a dozen spots in Grand Rapids, including at Sixth Street Bridge Park and on the Medical Mile. Air quality worsens in eastern US as Canadian wildfire smoke hangs over Midwest Darren Riley started the nonprofit in 2021 to help show that in a community, air quality is not created equal. 'For one side of the block, it may be a poor air quality day for that community,' he said. 'Other side of the city could be a clean air day. You may have communities that are neighboring heavy trucker routes, heavy highways. You have things we do ourselves like wood fire smoke and idle our cars when we're picking up our kids.' The website has a map where you can check air quality by location and get alerts when the air is bad. JustAir is active in nine other states too. 'It's very important we investigate how we can mitigate those disparities between neighborhood and neighborhood,' he said. 'The only way to do that is to have data to do better.' The Brief A doctor was in the right place at the right time when a fitness classmate collapsed. She performed CPR until the ambulance arrived. It was her first time doing CPR outside of work. DETROIT (FOX 2) - A special reunion on Friday gave a young woman who suffered a medical emergency the chance to thank the person who saved her life. The backstory Emily Morgan was in a fitness class when suddenly Emily collapsed. Luckily, Dr. Dema Fawaz, an emergency room physician at Corewell Health, was in the right place at the right time. "I turned around and saw Emily being slowly lowered to the ground," said Dr. Fawaz. "I sensed a lot of panic in the room and I immediately identified myself and said, 'Don't worry, I'm a physician, I can help.'" Fawaz said she performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, helping save Emily's life. It was her first time doing CPR outside of work. Big picture view At only 27 years old, Emily survived cardiac arrest, and all she remembers is waking up in the hospital. "They told me someone in my class had saved me, and I didn't know who it was. But I immediately recognized her when she came in at the hospital. We'd taken classes together before, and I just didn't know her name, so it was emotional in the hospital when she came and visited me," she said. Meanwhile, the heartfelt reunion was just another reminder of why learning CPR could save a life. Every second counts, and even though Fawaz is a doctor, CPR is not hard to learn, and the more people who know it, the better. It might just save a life.
