Bird flu spreads to third property as farmers warn Australia's egg shortage could be prolonged

The Guardian21-02-2025

A highly pathogenic strain of bird flu has been detected at a third property in Victoria, with farmers warning it could exacerbate Australia's egg shortage in coming months.
Agriculture Victoria on Thursday said the H7N8 strain of avian influenza had been detected at a third poultry farm at Euroa in Victoria's north-east.
Thousands of chickens were euthanised after the outbreak was detected at the first two properties earlier this month.
Meg Parkinson, the president of the Victorian Farmers Federation Egg Group, said the latest outbreak would extend the timeframe of supply issues that are being seen at supermarkets and grocery stores across the nation.
'It just means that it'll take longer for the shelves to fill up,' she said.
Parksinon said it would take six months for the impact of the latest outbreak to flow through to stock on store shelves.
'It just depends on what happens. Hopefully this will be the end of it, but if there's more [outbreaks] it will take longer,' she said.

Purchase limits on eggs remain in place at major supermarkets across Australia due to supply issues caused by the 2024 bird flu outbreak.
Victoria's acting chief veterinary officer, Dr Cameron Bell, said, given the close proximity of the infected farms, the latest detection was not unexpected.
Agriculture Victoria said its staff were working on the ground with industry to contain and eradicate the virus.
The outbreak of H7N8 avian influenza was first detected on 8 February at an egg farm in northern Victoria. It came only weeks after quarantine restrictions were lifted on the last property affected by Victoria's 2024 avian influenza outbreak – Australia's largest on record.
An exclusion zone, with a 5km radius around the farms, was established as well as a broader control area.

Since the detection of the latest outbreak, control orders have been in place to restrict the movement of poultry, poultry products and equipment between properties in designated zones to prevent the spread of the disease.
A Coles spokesperson said it was closely monitoring the outbreak of avian influenza in Victoria.
'We will continue to work closely with all our suppliers to ensure eggs remain available for our customers,' the spokesperson said.
'To manage availability, we will continue to maintain the purchase limits that have been in place since the first outbreak in Victoria in 2024.'
Woolworths has had a two-pack purchase limit on eggs in all stores except Western Australia since mid-last year, due to supply impacts from the 2024 bird flu outbreak.
A spokesperson for Woolworths said the higher demand for eggs over Christmas and the new year period put an additional short-term strain on egg availability across all retailers but supply remained stable.
'Our egg supply has continued to improve and we are working closely with our suppliers to source as many eggs as possible.'

I'm proof you can REVERSE your age: For decades BRYONY GORDON lived on a diet of cocaine, booze and cigarettes - but after getting sober, this is how she successfully lowered her biological age

For the first 37 years of my life, I treated my body like a pharmaceutical dustbin. If I saw something that promised to deliver me a quick, cheap high, I couldn't stay away from it. As a child, it was the sugary sweets that I knew I wasn't allowed – but craved anyway – stealing pick'n'mix from Woolworths to shovel into my mouth when I thought nobody was looking.

Bukayo Saka details injury fears & 'horrible' truth about Arsenal star's surgery

Arsenal talisman believes he is back in great shape after the frustration of missing three months of last season with a hamstring problem that required surgery Bukayo Saka has opened up on the physical AND mental strain of dealing with the first serious injury of his stellar career. The 23-year-old Arsenal talisman missed just over three months of last season after going under the knife for a hamstring problem on Christmas Eve. And the England attacker admitted he had brief doubts about whether he would be as thrillingly effective following the surgery. ‌ Saka explained: 'The first two days were the toughest - that realisation that I've got what I've got and I need an operation. You start to think … am I going to be the same? ‌ "Players have come back from this injury and weren't the same. But after two days, the surgery was done and successful and you just look forward. "I was really positive and put in all the work I needed with my diet, in the gym, on the pitch. I feel I've come back in a good place. It is about how much you want it - and I wanted it a lot. I knew the games I was coming back to and wanted to be in the best shape possible which is why I did everything.' And that included taking the decision to have the operation in the middle of the festive period. He recalled: 'It was horrible. Normally, you get more time to make a decision. "But it was going to be Christmas, the surgeons want to be with their families, so I decided on the spot that we were doing the surgery. It was about deciding whether I was going to be there on Christmas Day and, obviously, that was the last thing I wanted. 'So I had to do it at 5am on Christmas Eve. Credit to the surgeon - he got up early to do it. I was out of the hospital at about 3 or 4pm and home. Christmas Day, I went to my cousin's house but I was in a big brace and had crutches.' ‌ And Saka, who had a new cockapoo puppy named Tucker that he struggled to play with, turned to a motivational book to help him through the tough rehabilitation process, explaining: 'One of the books I was given was called The Power of Now. It's about not thinking about the past, not thinking about the future - just being in the moment and always asking yourself what's necessary right now. "Sometimes I can think … am I going to come back in the best shape?' Or … what could I have done to prevent injury? But all that is not necessary. "It's only going to bring bad energy, negativity to your body. One of the best things I took from the book is to always ask yourself what's necessary in this moment and try to live that way.' ‌ Saka returned at the start of April for the later stages of Arsenal's Champions League campaign, which ended in defeat to eventual winners Paris Saint Germain at the semi-final stage. He has already got over the disappointment of that loss. 'There was no time to ease in, it was straight into big games,' he said. 'I had to do my best, the team did their best and we fell short. It is what it is now but there is no point looking back now, we look forward and know what we have to do next year.' ‌ And, in the immediate future, Saka is looking forward to winning his 44th England cap in the friendly against Senegal at the City Ground. It will be his first appearance under Thomas Tuchel and Saka is impressed with the new manager. Saka said: 'Since I've come into the camp, he's been quite demanding, quite intense on the pitch. Off the pitch, he's more relaxed, a nice guy. He lets us enjoy ourselves and has created a nice environment.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. James Whale makes heartbreaking admission in terminal cancer update

James Whale has given viewers and fans a heartbreaking update after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The radio personality and TV presenter, 73, is currently dealing with stage 4 kidney cancer, which has now spread to his brain, lungs, and spine. After saying last month that he would be 'exceptionally lucky to make it to Christmas', James has continued to bravely go to work and feature on his TalkTV show. And while appearing on that show, he has issued another sad update for his fans, explaining further about how cancer affects his daily life. While talking to a guest who had lost her husband to cancer, James was frank with viewers, saying that things had taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks. 'Until very recently, everything was quite normal for me; everything was fine, and then you do get to a stage like I am now, with things getting to be very, very difficult. I know exactly what you're going through; I do know. I look basically OK, I get told, 'You look alright' – it's all makeup.' In May, on his birthday, James revealed that he doesn't have high expectations of seeing Christmas 2025, having already come to terms with his devastating prognosis. 'As people know, I'm not about to die. Well, you never know, do you? I've had all my treatment.' Insisting that he doesn't want sympathy, he added: 'I don't want anybody feeling sorry; I'm just giving you a lowdown on it. 'If I make it to Christmas, I will be exceptionally lucky. Sometimes I think it will be easier just to have a heart attack and go.' The two most recent updates have come after James revealed he's having no further treatment and that all options to reverse his cancer have now been exhausted. He did so to prioritise his 'quality of life' as he now focuses his time on 'making memories' with loved ones. James has vowed to 'make the next months as entertaining and interesting as [he] can'. 'I'm at the end of my cancer journey. I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk [TV] to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!', he also said. Speaking about his plans to still work for as long as he could, he quipped: 'It might actually be helping me, you never know, so I don't let that cloud my judgement – but on the medication I am on, I'm all over the place. 'I'm hoping to go on for another few weeks, few months, but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't.' Last Christmas, James' wife Nadine – whom he married in October 2021 – offered an update when he returned home from the hospital. More Trending 'After a worrying week, I am happy to report that @THEJamesWhale is out of ICU and back at home, having batted off the Grim Reaper yet again. 'This time he tried with a bout of Influenza A, but without success. Our hero is home for NYE,' she wrote in a caption. James was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in the year 2000 and was told he had just three months to live.
