D Gukesh was left heartbroken and covered his face with his hands after missing out on the Norway Chess title following a loss to American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana on Friday, June 6. The loss for the World Champion meant that Magnus Carlsen clinched his seventh Norway Chess title after drawing against Arjun Erigaisi from an unfavourable position. The game wasn't an easy one for Gukesh as Caruana had the early advantage in the contest. The 18-year-old tried to stage a comeback in the game but was didn't have time on his side and ended up committing a massive blunder. Instead of taking a bishop with his queen, Gukesh promoted his pawn for a queen, and walked straight into a knight fork that would've seen him down a piece in the endgame. Gukesh immediately knew that his chances of the title had evaporated before his eyes and with just two seconds remaining, offered a handshake to the American grandmaster. advertisementGukesh looked shellshocked after what transpired in the game and put his head down on the table and covered his face with his hands as the commentators were also left stunned by what happened in the closing stages of the game. The result also meant that Gukesh slipped down to third in the standings as Caruana took home the three points and moved to second. Gukesh ended the tournament with 14.5 points. Speaking after his title win, Carlsen said that both Gukesh and Erigaisi are very good but they still need a bit more time to prepare. 'They are all very good (Gukesh and Arjun), but they still need a little bit of time to prepare. But, the five-time world champion opined that the youngsters have a lot more ground to make up in many aspects of the game in order to catch up with the experienced set, including himself, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura.
