Classical music renditions enthral listeners

Express Tribune05-05-2025

The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) echoed with the timeless strains of South Asian classical music on Saturday evening, as a spellbinding concert organised by the Ahang-e-Khusrawi Classical Music Heritage Trust (CMHT) drew a packed house of music enthusiasts.
The event, aimed at preserving and promoting Pakistan's rich classical music heritage, attracted a diverse audience comprising diplomats, students, artists and connoisseurs of classical traditions. It was a night steeped in melody, spirituality, and cultural pride.
The evening opened with a mystical choral performance by the students of the Trust, including Afsa, Amaan, Sara and Ahmad. Their harmonious voices set a reverent and spiritual tone, instantly drawing the audience into a world of devotion and musical serenity. This was followed by a breathtaking instrumental performance featuring renowned flutist Salman Adil and tabla maestro Sarfaraz Anwar. Their seamless interplay and nuanced improvisations captivated listeners and drew resounding applause. Santoor artist Ali Raza delivered a compelling solo. His performance marked by intricate phrasing and rhythmic elegance, beautifully complemented by tabla accompaniment.
In the vocal segment, classical singer Hassan Abbas enthralled the audience with his rendering of a soulful raag, blending technical mastery with emotive expression. Sarfaraz Anwar returned to the stage-this time as a vocalist-to present a powerful rendition of Raag Darbari, leaving a deep emotional impact on the listeners. One of the most memorable moments of the evening was a spellbinding classical dance performance by acclaimed dancer Nighat Chaudhry. Her expressive interpretation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz's revolutionary poem "Hum Dekhain Gey" merged poetry, music, and movement into a stirring tribute that earned a huge appreciation.
Reflecting on the Trust's journey, President Iftikhar Rasheed shared its humble beginnings in 2003. "Six of us contributed Rs100,000 each to establish this nonprofit initiative dedicated to supporting classical musicians and offering free or subsidised music education," he said. Highlighting present challenges, he added, "Today, only three active trustees remain. We urgently need support from the corporate sector and the public to sustain this noble mission. Pakistan is full of raw talent if we don't nurture it, we risk losing a vital part of our cultural identity."
PNCA Director General Muhammad Ayoub Jamali, lauded the Trust's dedication and pledged institutional backing, including free music education facilities for underprivileged students. "In these difficult times, such unwavering commitment to classical arts is truly inspiring," he noted.

Dua Lipa, Callum Turner confirm engagement

Pop sensation Dua Lipa has confirmed she is engaged to actor Callum Turner, putting an end to months of speculation that began when fans spotted a diamond ring on her left hand in a Christmas Eve Instagram post. "Yes, we're engaged," the singer told British Vogue in its July cover interview. "It's very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever — it's a really special feeling." Dua revealed that Callum had the ring custom-made for her, consulting her inner circle — including her sister Rina and close friends — to ensure it reflected her personality. "I'm obsessed with it," she said. "It's so me. It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well." The couple, who began dating in January 2024, have mostly kept their relationship off the red carpet, instead offering fans the occasional soft-launch via sweet Instagram posts. That changed this year, when they made their official red carpet debut at the 2025 Met Gala. Dua wore a striking black Chanel halter dress with a plunging V-neck, while Callum complemented her look in a custom Louis Vuitton black suit, as reported by Vogue. Despite the public debut and engagement, wedding bells won't be ringing just yet. "I want to finish my tour, Callum's shooting, so we're just enjoying this period," Dua explained. "I've never been someone who's really thought about a wedding, or dreamt about what kind of bride I would be. All of a sudden, I'm like: 'Oh, what would I wear?'" The two first met at London's River Cafe, introduced by the restaurant's co-founder Ruth Rogers. They reconnected a year later over dinner in Los Angeles, where Dua was dining with poet Mustafa Ahmed and recognised Callum as "that really hot guy from The River Cafe." A shared love for books — specifically Hernan Diaz's Trust — sealed the connection. Since their relationship went public in early 2024, the couple have made several low-key appearances together, from vacationing in Mexico to attending the Glastonbury music festival, where Dua headlined. In October, she posted a photo of Callum kissing her cheek after one of her shows, writing: "Post-show fun and so much love!" As the couple look ahead, both are juggling packed schedules. Callum will next appear in Atropia, a war satire produced by Luca Guadagnino, and in a TV adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer. Meanwhile, Dua continues her Radical Optimism world tour, with stops across Australia and North America including a show at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Exhibit showcases German artist's mesmerising art

Visitors admire German artist Dagmar Rauwald's vision expressed through bold strokes and skillful mastery in her paintings displayed at the 'Intention vs Convention: Fluid Presence' exhibition at the PNCA in the federal capital. PHOTO: EXPRESS Pakistan National Council of the Arts, National Art Gallery, Islamabad hosted the highly anticipated solo exhibition titled: "Intention vs Convention: Fluid Presence" by renowned German artist Dagmar Rauwald which will go on till June 3. The event included an immersive workshop and presented a vibrant celebration of shared cultural heritage and creative exchange between Pakistan and Germany. The event was graced by Pakistan's Ambassador to Germany, Ambassador Shahid Kamal. During the event, Dagmar Rauwald, a dynamic artist based in Hamburg, presented a captivating body of work that thrives on emotional expressiveness and conceptual depth. Her paintings, applied to transparent film with bold, sweeping gestures, evoke a tension between fluidity and solidity, lightness and opacity. By embracing transparent foils — either layered or singular — Rauwald immerses viewers in the immediacy of the present, abstracting real-world events influenced by media imagery and socio-political narratives. Her exploration of hybridity and evolving visual codes invites a profound dialogue that bridges Western and Eastern traditions, drawing inspiration from the fluid rhythm of Urdu calligraphy. Through her concept of "fluid presence," Rauwald's art created a multilayered hermeneutic experience, resonating with contemporary discourses on gender, identity and the autonomy of artistic expression. Her mastery of technique and her commitment to fostering transcultural exchange have earned her national and international recognition. Central to the event's success was the visionary curatorship of Farrah Mehmood, an esteemed Pakistani visual artist and educator. Farrah's dedication to nurturing cultural dialogue and artistic excellence elevated the exhibition, illuminating a path for future collaborations between Pakistan and Germany. The event was further supported by Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, whose message of congratulations reflected his vision for sustained artistic exchanges between Hamburg and Islamabad. His emphasis on the importance of intercultural dialogue — particularly during these complex global times — resonated deeply with the event's purpose. In its entirety, this landmark event demonstrated that art is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but a bridge that connects cultures, fosters mutual understanding, and builds a more harmonious world. The collective efforts of Shahid Kamal's inspiring leadership, Farrah Mehmood's curatorial brilliance, Mariam Ahmed's direction and Dagmar Rauwald's bold artistic expression stand as a testament to the transformative power of creativity, diplomacy and vision. As this exhibition concludes, it leaves behind not just beautiful works and inspired minds but also a blueprint for future collaborations that will continue to strengthen the cultural, artistic, and educational ties between Pakistan and Germany. The opening drew a diverse audience from the arts, media, diplomatic community, and development sectors. It was well-attended and warmly received, with visitors appreciating the variety of perspectives and the shared message that photography speaks across languages and backgrounds. The exhibition will remain open to the public until June 3, 2025, and can be visited during official PNCA gallery hours. PNCA has also announced a painting workshop by Dagmar.
