Boxing: Welter champ Norman Jr. humbles Jin Sasaki with 5th-round KO
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Jin Sasaki fell to a fifth-round knockout defeat against WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. of the United States on Thursday, failing to become the first Japanese boxer to win a belt in the division under any of the sanctioning bodies.
Second-ranked, 23-year-old challenger Sasaki was the first Japanese to fight a world title bout in the weight class since 2009 but was soundly beaten at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.
Norman Jr. knocked Sasaki down twice in the opening round with his left and while the challenger had a more positive second round, the 24-year-old American had him back against the ropes in the third.
Norman Jr. then reeled off a deadly left hook that caught Sasaki square in the face in the fifth to send his opponent straight to the canvass and to the hospital.
The unbeaten champion improved to 28-0 in his career with 22 knockout wins, while Sasaki dropped to 19-2 with 17 KO wins and a draw.

Judo: S. Korea's Kim beats Japan's Arai for women's heavyweight gold
BUDAPEST (Kyodo) -- Japanese heavyweight Mao Arai fell short in her bid for a maiden judo world championship Thursday, losing to South Korea's Kim Ha Yun in the women's over-78-kilogram final in Budapest. The bout was ultimately decided by penalties after the two familiar opponents tried to avoid giving each other an opening to attack. Kim, who defeated Japan's Ruri Takahashi in the second round, became her country's first world champion in the heaviest women's category. The 22-year-old Arai said she had been too caught up in her opponent's strategy and would aim to expand her offensive repertoire for future competitions. "I want to increase my options for attacking first," she said. "I was fortunate with the draw and also had good luck. Next year I want to beat seeded opponents on the way to winning the gold medal." Japan's Hyoga Ota was beaten by Mongolia's Batkhuyag Gonchigsuren via ippon in the third round of the men's over-100-kg competition.

Figure skating: 3-time world champ Sakamoto to retire after Olympics
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese figure skater Kaori Sakamoto, winner of three consecutive world championships through 2024, said Friday she will retire from competition after next year's Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The 25-year-old, who claimed women's singles bronze at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, finished second at the world championships in Boston in March. Sakamoto revealed her plan at the opening ceremony for a new skating rink in her home city of Kobe in western Japan. "I feel like I have less than a year left," she said. "I'll be 29 at the following Olympics (in 2030), which is out of the question. I'll try to bring things to a close the year I turn 26." Sakamoto made her Olympic debut at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. She won her fourth straight Japanese championship, and fifth overall, last December.
